As announced in my previous Worldlog, I held an international lecture at the University of Leiden, Campus The Hague, on the 22nd of June last. The lecture was completely sold out and the hall was full of people of all ages, from all corners of the world: from Morocco and Turkey to Australia and Canada. And of course: The Netherlands! Our sister parties were also our guests. At the lecture I emphasised the important role of our growing international political movement, which is making a change to traditional politics and introducing a new type of politics. One that no longer focuses on people but on the planet and all its inhabitants. It gave me great energy to be together with so many like-minded people, to speak with them and to listen to them, and to further shape our beautiful movement.

Last week, it was exactly one hundred years ago that Suze Groeneweg was the first woman to become a member of the Dutch Lower House. She was elected on the 3rd of July 1918 and became a member of the Lower House, among 99 men. For the occasion of this jubilee, I wore a special dress with the text ‘What are you doing here?’ That is the question that Groeneweg and other women fighting for women’s suffrage were often asked by men in politics around 1920. With my dress I wanted to ask for attention for the number of women in Parliament that is still low. The question ‘What are you doing here?’ is still current today. Our party is still frequently asked the same question by traditional politicians.

Last week, a research of the Utrecht University Medical Centre and the Netherlands Heart Institute confirmed what the Party for the Animals has been trying to point out for a long time already: most animal tests are useless. They do not lead to the successful treatment of ill people. Additionally, many tests are not performed adequately because of time pressure and tests that have already been performed before are repeated. This makes that more animals have to suffer and die. The Party for the Animals wants the government to invest more in the development of animal-test free techniques and to phase out animal tests quickly, so that all animal tests will stop.

The myth that animal welfare in the Netherlands is good is gradually invalidated by research and undercover operations. Research by the Dutch news channel RTL recently showed gruesome abuses in Dutch slaughterhouses: pigs which are drowning into boiling hot water, screaming and struggling fiercely, and calves and sheep which were skinned alive. When similar horrifying abuses came to light in Belgian slaughterhouses, the Dutch government and meat industry responded adamantly that such abuses are not occurring in Dutch slaughterhouses. As always, they immediately took the livestock industry into protection instead of the animals themselves.

Last week, the organisation Animal Rights also brought shocking practices in Dutch duck breeding farms to light: animals are trampled to death and struck to death against the stable wall. When loading for transport to the slaughterhouse, the ducks are throttles and kicked. The pain that is inflicted on defenceless ducks by the meat industry is indescribable and unacceptable. We immediately raised Parliamentary questions about this. Duck breeding farms should be banned.

But the meat lobby keeps attempting to keep a grip on politics in any possible way. For example, the annual barbecue was held last week near one of the buildings of the Lower House to treat the Members of the Parliament to meat and drinks. The Party for the Animals finds it unacceptable that such shameless lobby activities are conducted near a building of the Parliament. A product that causes so much animal suffering and is called “the most environmental harmful part of our food package” by scientists and also by the cabinet, and that is an obstacle to achieving the Paris climate objectives, should not be the starting-point of such event.

That is why we were very happy again with the Climate and Animal Friendly Barbecue at the square in front of the Lower House building. It is a positive counterpart to the irresponsible meat eating feast. At the initiative of the Foundation “An Animal A Friend”, the Members of Parliament were introduced to delicious vegan hamburgers. A wonderful message and a great way to let politicians and the broader public know that it is also possible to have nice food and a pleasant time without having to kill animals. We also enjoyed the delicious bites. As Lofti El Hamidi, editor of NRC – a large Dutch newspaper – said: “Why do we still eat meat? It is actually no longer justified.”

Finally, a nice success for our Rotterdam parliamentary group: Thanks to a motion by the Party for the Animals, the Municipality of Rotterdam, the second biggest municipality of the Netherlands, will get an alderman responsible for animal welfare. A very important step on the way to more attention for animal interests in the municipality!

Așa cum am anunțat în ultimul Worldlog, pe data de 22 iulie am susținut o prelegere internațională la Universitatea din Leiden, campusul Haga. Prelegerea a fost ținută cu casa închisă iar sala a fost plină de oameni de toate vârstele, din toate colțurile lumii: din Maroc și Turcia până în Australia și Canada. Și, bineînțeles, din Țările de Jos! Partidele noastră soră s-au numărat de asemenea printre invitați. În timpul prelegerii am subliniat rolul important pe care îl are mișcarea noastră politică internațională în creștere de a da peste cap politica tradițională și de a înființa un nou tip de politică. O politică ce nu se mai concentrează asupra intereselor oamenilor, ci asupra planetei și tuturor locuitorilor acesteia. Îmi dă o energie incredibil de mare să pot să fiu împreună cu atâția oameni care gândesc la fel, să vorbesc cu ei, să-i ascult și să dăm în continuare formă viitorului mișcării noastre deosebite.

Săptămâna trecută s-au împlinit 100 de ani de când Suze Groeneweg a devenit prima femeie de cetățenie neerlandeză care a ocupat un loc la Camera Deputaților. Ea a fost aleasă în data de 3 iulie 1918 și a devenit deputat între 99 de bărbați. Cu ocazia acestei aniversări am purtat o rochie cu textul „Ce căutați aici?” Aceasta este întrebarea pe care Groeneweg și alte femei care susțineau dreptul la vot al femeilor le primeau adesea din partea bărbaților din politică în perioada 1920. Am vrut astfel să atrag atenția asupra numărului în continuare foarte mic al femeilor din parlament. Întrebarea „Ce căutați aici?” este, deci, încă de actualitate și în 2018. Și partidul nostru primește aceeași întrebare din partea politicienilor tradiționali.

Săptămâna trecută, un studiu realizat de Centrul Medical Universitar din Utrecht și Netherlands Heart Institute a confirmat ceea ce Partidul pentru Animale a încercat de mult să spună: majoritatea testelor pe animale sunt inutile. Acestea nu conduc către un tratament eficient al persoanelor bolnave. Mai mult decât atât, din pricina presiunii de timp, multe teste nu sunt realizate în mod corespunzător și sunt repetate. Pe cale de consecință, mai multe animale au de suferit și mor. Partidul pentru Animale neerlandez dorește ca guvernul să investească mult mai mult în dezvoltarea tehnicilor care nu presupun testele pe animale și să elimine rapid testele pe animale.

Mitul conform căruia bunăstarea animalelor în Țările de Jos este crescută începe să fie infirmat din ce în ce mai mult prin studii și imagini sub acoperire. De exemplu, un studiu realizat de canalul de știri neerlandez RTL a dezvăluit recent o serie de abuzuri îngrozitoare în abatoarele neerlandeze: porci care se îneacă în țipete în băi de apă încinse și viței și oi jupuite de vii. Atunci când o serie de atrocități similare au ieșit la suprafață în abatoarele din Belgia, guvernul neerlandez și sectorul cărnii a declarat cu fermitate că această situație nu are cum să aibă loc în abatoarele neerlandeze. Ca întotdeauna, au dorit imediat să protejeze sectorul agricol în detrimentul animalelor în sine.

Fermă de rațe

Săptămâna trecută, organizația Animal Rights a dezvăluit de asemenea o serie de practici îngrozitoare în cazul fermelor de rațe din Țările de Jos: animalele erau împinse de pereții hambarului și omorâte în bătaie. La încărcarea rațelor pentru transportul către abator, animalele sunt eviscerate și lovite. Suferința provocată rațelor neajutorate de către industria cărnii este de nedescris și inadmisibilă. De aceea am adresat imediat întrebări la Camera Deputaților. Fermele de rațe trebuie închise.

Lobby-ul din sectorul cărnii, însă, continuă să încerce cu orice preț să-și mențină influența asupra politicii. Săptămâna trecută, de exemplu, s-a organizat din nou barbecue-ul anual într-una din clădirile Camerei Deputaților, unde membrii parlamentului și miniștrii s-au bucurat de un ospăț copios cu carne și băuturi. Partidul pentru Animale consideră inadmisibilă o astfel de activitate de lobby nerușinată în sediul parlamentului. Un produs care cauzează atât de multă suferință animalelor, care este numit de cercetători și guvern drept „componenta cea mai dăunătoare pentru mediu a dietei noastre” și care împiedică atingerea obiectivelor climatice stabilite la Paris – acest produs nu ar trebui să fie punctul de pornire pentru un astfel de eveniment.

De aceea am fost foarte încântați să mergem din nou la barbecue-ul parlamentar prietenos cu clima și animalele, organizat în piața din fața clădirii Camerei Deputaților. Acesta este contrapartea pozitivă a festivalului iresponsabil de consumat carne. La inițiative fundației „Un Animal – Un Prieten”, parlamentarii și miniștrii au putut să încerce hamburgeri vegani delicioși. Un mesaj frumos și un mod minunat de a demonstra politicienilor, dar și publicului larg, că se poate mânca copios și fără uciderea animalelor. Bineînțeles că am savurat o grămadă de tipuri de delicatese! Așa cum a spus Lofti El Hamidi, redactor la NRC – un ziar neerlandez important: „De ce să mai mâncăm carne? Efectiv nu mai există argumente în acest sens.”

În final, vreau să vă vorbesc despre încă un mare succes pentru facțiunea noastră din Rotterdam: mulțumită unei moțiuni înaintată de Partidul pentru Animale, municipalitatea Rotterdam – a doua cea mai mare municipalitate din Țările de Jos – va avea un membru al consiliului municipal dedicat bunăstării animalelor. Acesta este un pas foarte important pentru a da, în mod structural, mai multă atenție intereselor animalelor în municipalitate!
