Actualmente cerca de 250 delfines son sacrificados en la localidad pesquera japonesa de Taiji. Esta cacería anual está estrechamente relacionada con el comercio de delfines para el entretenimiento. Después de que los delfines salvajes hayan sido conducidos a una bahía los animales más bellos son seleccionados y vendidos por un montón de dinero a acuarios de todo el mundo. Los delfines restantes son sacrificados brutalmente. Cove Guardians, voluntarios de la organización protectora de animales Sea Shepherd, que protestan contra las masacres, reportan escenas horrendas.

Esto tiene que terminar! Hemos solicitado la presencia del Ministro Timmermans el martes entrante durante la hora de las preguntas en el Parlamento. Nos alegra la promesa del Ministro de Relaciones el Señor Timmermans que el embajador de los Países Bajos en Japón se pronunciara en contra de los masacres de los delfines. Los embajadores del Reino Unido y los Estados Unidos ya han condenado los masacres. De parte de los Países Bajos se mantuvo en silencio, mientras que el gobierno tomo la posición oficial que la caza de delfines debe ser combatida.

Es entonces un paso en la dirección correcta, pero todavía tenemos que actuar en forma más dura contra estas horribles masacres. Queremos que Holanda también ponga condiciones para el libre comercio con Japón. Esto significa que Japón debe respetar los derechos humanos, que tiene que respetar la moratoria sobre la caza de ballenas y debe detener la masacre de delfines antes de poder llevarse a cabo nuevas negociaciones comerciales.

La semana pasada tuve un debate sobre la mayor transferencia de poder a Bruselas y el foro de los ciudadanos de la ciudadanía BurgerforumEU.nl que llama con razón a un referéndum. Nos parece inaceptable entregar más soberanía a Bruselas sin antes presentarlo a los ciudadanos Holandeses a través de un referéndum. Un estudio del encuestador holandés Maurice de Hond muestra que el 67 por ciento de los holandeses opinan que con una nueva transferencia de poderes por parte de Holanda a Bruselas se debe organizar primeramente un referéndum.

Somos firmes defensores de la cooperación internacional, pero tomamos distancia de la forma en que se están delegando cada vez más poderes de decisión a una Bruselas organizada en forma antidemocrática.

Bruselas tiene gran influencia en la política para la agricultura (la mitad del presupuesto de Bruselas es destinada para los subsidios agrícolas) y la forma en que Bruselas debilita las metas climáticas es también una prueba de la gran debilidad de la Comunidad Europea. Por ejemplo Bruselas prefiere dar más espacio para la energia nuclear…

At this moment, around 250 dolphins are being slaughtered in the Japanese fishing village of Taiji. This annual hunt relates closely to the trade in dolphins for entertainment. After wild dolphins are rounded up in a bay, the finest animals are selected and sold for a lot of money to dolphinariums around the globe. The remaining dolphins are brutally slaughtered. Cove Guardians, volunteers of the animal welfare organisation Sea Shepherd, who protest these massacres on site, report horrific scenes.

This must stop! During oral question time last Tuesday, we called minister Timmermans to Parliament. We are glad that minister Timmermans of Foreign Affairs promised that the Dutch ambassador in Japan will take a stand against this slaughter of dolphins. The ambassadors of the United Kingdom and the United States already condemned these massacres. The Netherlands remained silent, whereas government adopted the formal position that dolphin hunting must be stopped.

Although this is a step in the right direction, we must take much tougher action against these gruesome massacres. We also want the Netherlands to set conditions with regard to free trade with Japan. This means that Japan must respect human rights, respect the moratorium on whaling and stop the slaughter of dolphins before further trade negotiations can be conducted.

Last week, I had a debate on a further transfer of power to Brussels and the citizens’ initiative BurgerforumEU.nl, which rightly calls for a referendum. We believe it is not acceptable to transfer more sovereignty to Brussels without asking the Dutch people first by way of a referendum. A poll by Dutch pollster Maurice de Hond has shown that 67 per cent of Dutch people are of the opinion that a referendum should be held in case of a new transfer of power from the Netherlands to Brussels.

We are a strong advocate of international cooperation, but we distance ourselves from the way in which more and more decision-making powers are transferred to an undemocratically organised Brussels.

Brussels has a major impact on agricultural policy (half of the Brussels budget goes to agricultural subsidies) and the way in which Brussels has weakened climate targets is another proof of major weakness of the current EU. For example, Brussels gives more room to nuclear energy ….
