Worldlog Semana 44 – 2010

La semana pasada nos ha abandonado uno de nuestro pilares literarios. El escritor holandés Harry Mulisch murió el 31 de Octubre del 2010 a la edad de 83 años. No sólo en Holanda era considerado como uno de nuestros mas grandes escritores, también logró fama internacional con los libros De Aanslag(El Atentado) y De Ontdekking van de Hemel(El Descubrimiento del Cielo). No todos saben que él, junto a haber llevado una vida llena de significado para la gente, también se preocupaba por los animales.Nuestro ex-Ministro-Presidente Balkenende escribió una carta a Mulisch sobre el hecho que, según su opinión, los intelectuales guardaban silencio en el debate social. Mulisch reaccionó señalando al Ministro-Presidente los hechos en lo que respecta al gobierno, que no hizo (o hace) nada para detener el maltrato de los animales en la bio-industria. Lo que los intelectuales sí hacían, p.ej., por intermedio de su apoyo a las organizaciones protectoras de animales.

Mulisch estaba también furioso sobre el hecho que la opción principial de su colega escritor Maarten 't Hart, de no tener pasaporte, le hizo imposible colocarse en la lista de candidatos del Partido para los Animales. Harry Mulisch lo acompañó personalmente al Consejo de Estado, donde debería entregarse la lista de candidatos. Llegando al Consejo de Estado él se ofreció para tomar el lugar de Maarten 't Hart, lo que fue imposible porque ya se había cerrado la postulación a la candidatura. Nosotros tenemos mucho que agradecer a Harry Mulisch y deseo mucha fuerza para asimilar esta pérdida a todos lo que lo quisieron y apreciaron.

La semana pasada pedimos a la Ministra de Salud Popular Edith Schippers, una aclaración sobre el aumento de una cantidad de pruebas con animales en Holanda. Ayer se dió a conocer que en el 2009 se efectuaron 592.665 pruebas con animales. ¡Esto es 2,5 por ciento más que el año anterior!. Es la primera vez en 6 años que en Holanda aumenta nuevamente la cantidad de experimentos con animales. Colega Esther Ouwehand ha advertido repetidamente sobre las consecuencias de los nuevos desarrollos para animales de prueba, tal como el programa -REACH para lo cual se probarán nuevamente muchos elementos químicos. Experimentos con manipulación genética cuestan cada vez más vidas de animales de prueba.

Desde su entrada en la Segunda Cámara el Partido para los Animales ha pedido esfuerzos extra para continuar disminuyendo los experimentos con animales. Aunque se ha aceptado una parte de las proposiciones del Partido para los Animales, un centro conigtivo para las alternativas de pruebas con animales y duplicar el presupuesto para el desarrollo de técnicas sin animales de prueba, el esfuerzo del gabinete sigue siendo insuficiente.

Y por último, noticias intranquilizadoras sobre el cambio climático en Holanda. Las estaciones meteorológicas MeteoVista / Weeronline.nl han dado a conocer que en los últimos diez años la temperatura en Holanda ha subido 0,42 grados Celsius y con esto se calienta dos veces más que el promedio mundial. Esto sucede porque estamos relativamente cerca del Polo Norte. El calentamiento en el Polo Norte es el más fuerte, porque el hielo nevado en el mar no es tan grande en el OceanoArtico y hay menos nieve en Canadá y Siberia. Con lo cual el Hemisferio Norte refleja menos luz solar y absorbe mas radiación (y se transforma en calor).

El Partido para los Animales desea que Holanda, tanto en como en conjunto con la Unión Europea, sea un pionero real en el comando mundial de limitar el calentamiento de la tierra a 1 ó 2 grados Celsius. Esto significa que es nacesarioa un cambio masivo en la renovación de fuentes de energía limpia tales como viento, fuerza del agua y energía-solar. Y que se hará un esfuerzo máximo para disminuir el consumo de albúminas animales. Desgraciadamente el nuevo Gobierno en Holanda no tiene en sus planes tomar medidas fuertes para combatir el calentamiento. Hay bastante que hacer, continuará.

One of our greatest supporters from the world of literature passed away last week. The Dutch writer Harry Mulisch died on 31 October 2010 at the age of 83. Not only was he famous in the Netherlands as one of this country’s greatest writers, he also acquired international renown with books like The Assault and The Discovery of Heaven. Something that not everyone knows is that while Mulisch made a significant impact on people’s lives, he also took a real stance in defence of animals. Our former prime minister, Balkenende wrote in a letter to Mulisch that he believed intellectuals did not participate nearly enough in the social debate. Mulisch replied brilliantly by pointing out to the prime minister that the government has failed (and continues to fail) to take action to stop the abuse of animals in the bio-industry, while intellectuals, on the other hand, do what they can, by for example, supporting animal protection organizations.

Mulisch was also furious that the fundamental decision of colleague writer Maarten ’t Hart not to hold a passport meant he was refused to stand as a candidate for the Party for the Animals. Harry Mulisch accompanied ’t Hart to the Council of State, to which the lists of candidates are submitted. At the Council of State, he offered to stand in ’t Hart’s place, which was not possible as the deadline for nominations had already passed. We owe much to Harry Mulisch and I wish everyone who knew and loved him much strength in dealing with this loss.

Last week we asked Minister Edith Schippers of Public Health to explain the rise in the number of animal experiments in the Netherlands. It was announced yesterday that 592,665 animal experiments were conducted in 2009, a rise of 2.5 percent relative to the previous year! This is the first rise in the number of animal experiments that we have seen in six years. My colleague Esther Ouwehand has already repeatedly warned about the consequences of new developments for animal experiments, such as the European REACH programme which involves the retesting of many chemical substances. Genetic manipulation experiments are also costing increasing numbers of animals their lives.

Since entering the Lower House of the Dutch parliament, the Party for the Animals has called for additional efforts to reduce and continue reducing the number of animal experiments. Although some of the proposals put forward by the Party for the Animals have been accepted, including a knowledge centre for alternatives to animal experiments and a doubling of the budget for developing animal experiment-free techniques, the efforts on the part of the government remain inadequate.

We end with some disturbing news about climate change in the Netherlands. The weather stations MeteoVista / Weeronline.nl have indicated that the Netherlands has become warmer by 0.42 degrees Celsius in the past ten years, which is twice as fast as the global average. This is because we are relatively close to the North Pole, where global warming is the strongest. The snowed-covered sea ice of the Arctic Ocean is shrinking and there is less snow in Canada and Siberia. As a result, in the Northern Hemisphere less sunlight is being reflected back into space and more radiation is being absorbed (and converted into heat).

The Party for the Animals wants the Netherlands, along with the rest of the European Union, to take the lead in limiting global warming to 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. This will require the large-scale adoption of clean sources of energy, such as wind, waterpower and solar energy. Furthermore, it will also require a serious reduction in the consumption of animal proteins. Unfortunately, the new Dutch government does not intend to take any firm measures against global warming. While there is still so much to do. We’ll keep you posted.
