Cuando todavía teníamos frescos en la memoria los atentados de París, el terror nos volvió a golpear la semana pasada. Esta vez en la capital de nuestro país vecino, Bruselas. Nuestros pensamientos están con las víctimas y sus familiares. Los atentados de Bruselas nos afectan a todos. Una vez más vemos que no solo tenemos que vencer al terrorismo, sino que también debemos vencer nuestro propio miedo. Tenemos que trabajar para crear una sociedad con un mayor grado de unión, solidaridad y concordia, una sociedad en la que aprendamos a vencer nuestros miedos y a valorar nuestra libertad, para que los jóvenes no descarrilen y tengan siempre perspectivas de futuro.
Ucrania
Según un estudio, en Ucrania, uno de cada veinte niños entre 5 y 14 años realiza trabajo infantil, especialmente en los sectores agrario y minero. Hasta hace poco, el gobierno holandés advertía al respecto a aquellas empresas que desean desarrollar actividades en Ucrania. Un sitio web del gobierno para empresas holandesas decía: “si su empresa realiza actividades en los sectores agrario y minero, hay una posibilidad considerable de que alguna fábrica o algún intermediario haga uso de trabajo infantil”. Esta advertencia ha desaparecido recientemente del sitio web en cuestión.
Muy extraño, sobre todo por lo poco que queda para el referéndum holandés del 6 de abril sobre el acuerdo de asociación comercial con Ucrania. Creo muy poco probable que la situación en Ucrania haya mejorad así de repente. El ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de los EE. UU. sigue advirtiendo sobre el trabajo infantil en Ucrania, sobre todo en la agricultura y la minería, pero también sobre el uso de niños en la industria del porno, en la guerra y en la venta ambulante. ¿Por qué ha dejado nuestro gobierno de advertir sobre estas cuestiones? Por supuesto, he planteado preguntas parlamentarias al respecto.
Anja Hazekamp, la presidenta de nuestro grupo en el Parlamento Europeo, ha sido elegida como la europarlamentaria más respetuosa con el bienestar animal. Por una parte nos congratulamos, naturalmente, de que llame la atención y se valore el duro trabajo de Anja, pero es una pena que los premios anuales para los europarlamentarios estén patrocinados en gran medida por los grupos de presión industriales presentes en Bruselas. Por ese motivo, Anja ha decidido rechazar el premio. El Partido por los Animales quiere acabar con la enorme influencia de los grupos de presión en Bruselas. ¡Bien hecho, Anja!
The Guardian ha publicado esta semana un artículo sobre el último estudio según el cual consumir menos carne tiene un gran impacto en la lucha contra el cambio climático.
Nuestro partido hermano en Gran Bretaña, el Animal Welfare Party, le ha pedido a Morrissey que se postule como candidato a la alcaldía de Londres, y el cantante se lo está pensando seriamente. Lee más aquí.

With the Paris attacks still fresh in our minds, we were again shocked by a terror attack last week. This time it happened in the capital of our neighbouring country; Brussels. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. The attacks in Brussels affect us all. Yet again, it shows that it is important that we do not only have to overcome terrorism but also our fears. We must actively build a society of more solidarity and togetherness. A society where we learn to overcome our fears and to cherish our freedom. So that young people do not go off the rails but are given perspective.
Ukraine
According to research, one in twenty children in Ukraine between 5 and 14 years is involved in child labour, in particular in the agricultural and mining sectors. Until recently, the Government warned Dutch entrepreneurs who wished to conduct activities in Ukraine against child labour. On a specific government’s site for entrepreneurs in the Netherlands it said: “in particular if you wish to conduct activities in the agricultural or construction sectors, there is a substantial chance that a production company or building contractor will use child labour.” This warning was taken from their website only recently.
Very strange, especially because it is so close to the Dutch referendum on 6 April on the Association Agreement (Trade Agreement) with Ukraine. I think it is highly unlikely that the situation in Ukraine has changed all of a sudden. The US Ministry of Foreign Affairs is still warning against child labour in Ukraine, in particular in the agricultural and mining sectors, but also against the use of children in the porn industry, as child soldiers and street sellers. Why does our Government no longer mention this? Of course I asked parliamentary questions!
Anja Hazekamp, our Party Chairman in the European Parliament, was hailed as the most animal-friendly MEP. It is of course great that Anja’s hard work does not go unnoticed and is appreciated, but the annual awards for MEPs are largely sponsored by the gigantic industry lobby in Brussels. Anja has made it known that she will not accept the award. After all, the Party for Animals wants to stop the huge influence of lobbyists in Brussels. Good choice, Anja!
This week, The Guardian reported on the most recent research, which showed that eating less meat has a great effect in the fight against climate change.
