Worldlog Week 24 – 2010
Vorige week zijn Esther Ouwehand en ik voor de tweede keer beëdigd als Tweede Kamerleden. Een bijzonder en mooi moment. Tijd om weer in het parlement aan de slag te gaan voor dier, natuur en milieu. In de tussentijd zijn de coalitieonderhandelingen in Nederland aan de gang. Het ziet er naar uit dat een rechts kabinet van de liberale VVD, de Partij voor de Vrijheid van Geert Wilders en het CDA gelukkig van de baan is. Andere opties voor coalities worden nu bekeken. De Partij voor de Dieren hoopt op een coalitie waarbij de VVD, Partij voor de Arbeid, D66 en GroenLinks zullen deelnemen.
Bedankt voor alle leuke felicitaties uit het buitenland! De felicitaties van onze Portugese collega Partido Pelos Animais wilde ik jullie niet onthouden.

Mijn collega Esther Ouwehand is door de natuurorganisatie Natuurmomenten als groenste politicus van het jaar 2009-2010 uitgeroepen. Esther ontving de prijs vanwege haar gedrevenheid en vastberadenheid in debatten, haar expertise op het dossier en het aantal moties en amendementen die door haar zijn ingediend en aangenomen voor natuurbehoud.
En, ondanks dat we liever een nertsenfokverbod zouden hebben in 2018 is er binnen de Partij voor de Dieren ook blijdschap over het besluit in de Tweede Kamer om alle nertsenfokkerijen in 2024 te sluiten. De Tweede Kamer ging vorig jaar al akkoord met een plan om nertsenfokkers tot 2018 de tijd te geven hun bedrijf af te bouwen. De Eerste Kamer wilde helaas een langere afbouwperiode, waarna de initiatiefnemers van het voorstel, de Socialistische Patij en de Partij voor de Arbeid de overgangsperiode met zes jaar verlengden.
Jaarlijks worden in Nederland bijna vijf miljoen nertsen vergast. Nederland is na Denemarken en China de derde producent van nertsenbont ter wereld. Het overgrote deel van de Nederlandse productie is bestemd voor de export. Gelukkig is er nu uitzicht om dit onnodige dierenleed te doen stoppen.

Last week Esther Ouwehand and I were sworn in for the second time as members of parliament. A special and wonderful occasion. Time to continue our work in parliament for animals, nature and the environment. Meanwhile coalition negotiations are underway in the Netherlands. Fortunately, it appears as though a right-wing cabinet with the libertarian VVD, the Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party and the CDA is dead in the water. Other options for coalitions are now being studied. The Party for the Animals would favour a coalition involving the VVD, the Labour Party, D66 and GroenLinks.

My colleague Esther Ouwehand has been proclaimed the greenest politician of the year 2009-2010 by Natuurmonumenten, a nature reserve organization. Esther was awarded the prize for her drive and determination when debating, her deep knowledge of her portfolio and the number of motions and amendments regarding nature preservation that she submitted and had accepted.
And, although we would rather have a ban on mink farming in 2018, the Party for the Animals is also happy about the decision in the Lower House to close all mink farms in 2024. Last year, the Lower House had already agreed to a plan to give mink farmers the time until 2018 to wind down their businesses. Unfortunately, the Upper House wanted mink farmers to be given a longer winding-down period, after which the instigators of the proposal, the Socialist Party and the Labour Party, extended the transition period by six years.
Each year nearly five million minks are gassed in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is the world’s third largest producer of mink fur, after Denmark and China. The majority of the mink fur produced in the Netherlands is intended for export. Fortunately, there is now hope that this needless animal suffering will be stopped.
