Grande successo! La nostra mozione per porre fine all’appendere vivo per la macellazione di polli, tacchini e anatre è stata accolta! Nei Paesi Bassi, ci macellano ogni anno più di 450 milioni di polli e anatre. In gran parte dei macelli nei Paesi Bassi questi animali sono appesi vivi a testa in giù a dei ganci. L’appendere degli animali è crudele: provoca paura e stress ed è molto doloroso e causa fratture ossee e strappi muscolari.

Il processo di macellazione è sempre accompagnato da paura, dolore e lo stress per gli animali. L’appendere di polli e altri uccelli è un metodo crudele di macellazione di cui il parlamento ora dice che deve finire. Il sottosegretario per gli affari economici voleva solamente discutere di questo metodo in Europa. Il parlamento lo ritiene insufficiente e si è espresso per fortuna chiaramente per un divieto nazionale.

La settimana scorsa ho presentato una mozione per il posizionamento di pannelli solari attorno all’aeroporto di Schiphol. E un bene per l’ambiente e la sicurezza. Nei Paesi Bassi si sta svolgendo una discussione sulla possibilità che grandi uccelli come oche si possano scontrare con gli aerei. Decine di migliaia di oche nell’intera provincia di Noord-Holland sono state gassate o uccise sparandoli sotto l’apparenza di fastidio e di sicurezza per l’aviazione. Insensato e crudele. L’area intorno a Schiphol, tuttavia, negli ultimi decenni, si è reso molto attraente per le oche causa la coltivazione di colture proteiche e vaste praterie. Mentre le aree con panelli solari non lo sono altrettanto. Panelli solari sono perfettamente applicabili intorno agli aeroporti. La Germania ha già installato i pannelli solari in cinque aeroporti attorno alle piste di atterraggio ed anche a Denver (USA) e Dehli si sta mettendo dei panelli!

L’internazionalizzazione del Partito per gli Animali continua. A gennaio sono stato in Portogallo e ora ci sono altre due inviti. Andrò probabilmente fine marzo a Madrid per un incontro di PACMA, il partito spagnolo per gli animali. E nel mese di aprile, sono stato invitato per andare a parlare a una conferenza del appena fondato partito per gli animali a Cipro. Molto bello! I partiti si stanno preparando per le prossime elezioni europee del 22 maggio e vorrebbero lavorare insieme per rendere chiaro ai votanti che Europa deve cambiare direzione.

Questo si è dimostrato ancora una volta la scorsa settimana, quando il sottosegretario Dijksma annunciato di non stabilire nessun divieto d’importazione di foie gras (fegato d’oca e d’anatra di animali che sono stati costretti a mangiare) nei Paesi Bassi, perché ciò non sarebbe consentito dall’Europa. L’Europa è troppo spesso una scusa per gli Stati membri per non stabilire delle regole per consentire una migliore protezione degli animali, la natura e l’ambiente. L’Europa è regolarmente solo un potere fastidioso come ora con il desiderato divieto d’importazione di foie gras. E secondo il sottosegretario non si può fare dall’Europa.

Scioccante! L’esercito britannico si esercita con fucili AK-47 su suini vivi. Assieme alla mia collega Esther Ouwehand ho fatto delle interrogazioni parlamentari sull’uso di animali vivi in esercitazioni militari nei Paesi Bassi.

La Danimarca vieta la macellazione rituale senza l’uso di anestetici! La mia proposta di legge per un divieto sulla macellazione rituale senza l’uso di anestetici è stata accolta dal parlamento ma poi purtroppo respinto dal senato. Al momento sto lavorando alla preparazione di una nuova proposta di legge. L’anno prossimo sarà eletto un nuovo senato e mi piacerebbe difendere la mia proposta nel nuovo senato.

Alcune settimane fa, un’agricoltrice olandese ha pubblicato foto di piccoli maialini soprafuse che erano legato con le loro orecchie a un secchio di acqua calda. Ho chiesto al sottosegretario se lei ritiene questo un esempio di zootecnica amichevole per gli animali. Ci ha risposto che ritiene di non e ci ha indicato la soluzione di questi allevatori Canadesi.

E firma anche per proteggere animali selvatici in Malawi dai droni dei cacciatori.

Success! Our motion to put an end to stringing up live chickens, turkeys and ducks for slaughtering was passed! In the Netherlands, more than 450 million chickens and ducks are slaughtered every year. In a large part of slaughterhouses in the Netherlands, these animals are strung up on hooks alive. Stringing up of animals is cruel: it causes fear and stress and is very painful because of broken bones and ripped muscles.

For animals, the slaughtering process is always accompanied by fear, pain and stress. Stringing up chickens and other birds is a cruel slaughter method, of which Parliament now says that it must stop. The State Secretary of Economic Affairs only wanted to bring this method up for questioning in Europe. Parliament found this insufficient and fortunately clearly expressed itself in favour of a national ban.

Last week, I tabled a motion to place solar cells at and around Schiphol airport. This is good for the environment as well as safety. In the Netherlands, there is a debate going on about the danger of large birds, such as geese, colliding with planes. Tens of thousands of geese in the entire province of North Holland have been gassed or shot dead under the pretext of nuisance and air safety. Senseless and cruel. Over the past decades, however, the area around Schiphol was made very attractive to geese as a result of cultivation of high-protein crops and pastures. Areas with solar cells are not attractive to geese. Solar cells are perfectly applicable around airports. Germany has already installed solar panels around the landing strips of five airports and these panels are also being placed in Denver (US) and Delhi!

The internationalisation of the Party for the Animals continues. In January, I was in Portugal and two more invitations came in. Probably at the end of March, I am going to Madrid for a meeting of PACMA, the Spanish Party for the Animals. And I have been invited to come to Cyprus in April to speak at a conference of the recently founded party for the animals. Really great! The parties are preparing themselves for the European elections on 22 May next and would like to work together so as to explain to voters that Europe has to drastically change its course.

That became clear again last week, when State Secretary Dijksma announced not to implement an import ban on foie gras (goose and duck liver from forced-fed animals) in the Netherlands, as this would not be allowed by Europe. All too often, Europe is an excuse for Member States for not making rules to improve the protection of animals, nature and the environment. Europe is also regularly merely an obstacle, like now, with regard to the necessary import ban on foie gras. According to her, Europe does not allow that.

Shocking! The British army trains on live pigs with AK-47 firearms. Together with my colleague Esther Ouwehand, I asked questions in Parliament about the use of live animals in military training in the Netherlands.

Denmark outlaws ritual slaughter without stunning! My legislative proposal to prohibit ritual slaugther without stunning was adopted in the House of Representatives, but unfortunately it was rejected in the Senate. I am currently preparing a new legislative proposal. Next year, a new Senate will be elected, which is when I would like to defend the legislative proposal in the new Senate.

A few weeks ago, a Dutch farmer posted a photo of undercooled piglets that were attached to a bucket of warm water by their ears. I asked the State Secretary whether she thought this was an example of animal-friendly cattle farming. She did not, and pointed out the solution of these Canadian farmers.
