Worldlog Settimana 48 – 2011

Tanta commozione nei Paesi Bassi per le troppe oche intorno all’aeroporto di Schiphol. Le oche possono entrare in collisione con aeri, il che a sua volta potrebbe causare problemi durante atterraggio e il decollo. Il piano del sottosegretario dell'ambiente Atsma è, di uccidere gli animali tramite gassificazione oppure, come già accade, spararli in massa. Ma noi abbiamo un’idea molto migliore: trasformare le terre con erba e i terreni agricoli attorno all’aeroporto al più presto in un parco con panelli fotovoltaici!

In questo modo l’area attorno all’aeroporto Schiphol diventa poco attraente come area di nidificazione o area di foraggiamento e le oche ne staranno lontano. Un'altra soluzione è terminare la caccia alla volpe, il nemico naturale dell’oca. La politica con la quale cacciatori possono sparare le oche in massa, oppure quella futura della gassificazione delle oche è molto ostile per gli animali e nemmeno efficace. La possibilità di situazioni di pericolo vicino a Schiphol cosi non sono evitate, ma in tanti casi proprio aumentati. La caccia alle oche causa un comportamento di volo non prevedibile degli animali e la caccia o la gassificazione non porta alla riduzione del numero degli uccelli.

Negli Stati Uniti esiste già un divieto di attività agricola a meno di 3 km dagli aeroporti. Perché i Paesi Bassi non hanno queste regole, tanti uccelli si sentono attirati dall’area dell’aeroporto, il che crea inutili rischi della sicurezza del volo per le persone. Campi di panelli fotovoltaici sono una soluzione che è interessante dal punto di vista economico e rispetta l’ecologia. Schiphol potrebbe diventare la più grande centrale fotovoltaica del mondo, senza che ci sia bisogno di sparare un singolo colpo! A me questo sembra la migliore soluzione.

Martedì 29 Novembre era una giornata triste per l’orca Morgan. L’orca si è trasferito quel giorno verso Loro Parque su Tenerife. Nessuna libertà per Morgan allora, ma una condanna all’ergastolo in un parco a tema delle Isole Canarie. Incredibile che il nostro sottosegretario augura una cosa cosi a questo bellissimo animale selvatico. Più su quest’argomento nel mio Worldlog della settimana scorsa.

Domenica scorso, 27 Novembre, c’è stato il congresso del nostro partito. Un congresso molto bello e stimolante. Tra le altre cose è deciso che i congressi, dal congresso del decimo anniversario alla fine del 2012, saranno pubblici. Un’ottima decisione!

Con l’offerta delle Memorie di Risposta al Senato ho fatto nelle scorse settimane un ulteriore passo nella procedura della mia proposta della legge sulla macellazione senza l’uso di anestetici. I senatori hanno fatto tante domande costruttive riguardante la libertà di religione e sulla misura in cui il benessere degli animali è danneggiato nel caso della macellazione senza anestetici. Ne sono proprio contenta perché mi ha permesso di approfondire un'altra volta la domanda perché è giustificata che sarà posto fine alla posizione speciale che ora vale nella procedura di macellazione per le macellerie con uno sfondo religioso. Il dibattito si svolgerà il 13 Dicembre, e le votazioni saranno una settimana dopo.

La radio degli animali PiepVandaag ha lanciato una petizione per convincere i membri del Senato olandese di votare a favore della nostra proposta di legge che vieta la macellazione senza anestetici. E questa settimana abbiamo aperto un punto di raccolta segnalazioni per le non-verità del sottosegretario Bleker per quanto riguarda la sua politica agricola naturalistica. Questa “macchina della verità di Bleker” sarà la base per un libro nero sulla politica del sottosegretario. Lui dice per esempio che le megastalle sono un bene per il benessere degli animali altre bugie di questo tipo. Noi chiediamo perciò tutti di informarci quando trovano Bleker che dice altre romanzate della realtà!

There’s a lot of commotion at the moment in the Netherlands regarding the numbers of geese in the vicinity of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Bird collisions are a hazard to aircraft taking off and landing. The plan of Secretary of State for the Environment Atsma is to simply gas the birds or have them shot en mass, which is already happening. But we have a much better idea: convert the grass and agricultural fields surrounding the airport into solar panel arrays!

This would deter geese from using the area surrounding the airport to breed and forage. Another solution is to end the hunting foxes, the natural predator of geese. A policy that allows the large-scale shooting or gassing of geese is not only extremely animal unfriendly, it is not even effective. Such a policy will not help reduce hazardous situations at the airport but will in many cases actually increase them. Hunting for example will cause the geese to exhibit unpredictable escape behaviour. Furthermore, shooting or gassing geese will not reduce their numbers.

The United States already bans agricultural activities within a 3-km radius of airports. As the Netherlands lacks this type of regulation, birds flock to the vicinity of the airport, which creates an unnecessary risk for travellers. Fields of solar panels represent a solution that is interesting from an economic standpoint and which respects the environment. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol could become the world’s largest solar power plant without a single shot being fired! This is surely the best possible solution.

Tuesday 29 November was a sad day for orca Morgan. On that day, the killer whale was moved to Loro Parque in Tenerife. Morgan has been denied a life of freedom and condemned to lifelong incarceration in an amusement park. It is unbelievable that the state secretary has determined such a fate for this beautiful wild animal. Read more about this story in my Worldlog of last week.

Our party held its party congress on Sunday 27 November. The event proved to be inspiring. Among the decisions made was to make the congresses public effective the end of 2012 when the party holds its 10th congress. A excellent decision!

In submitting the memorandum of reply to the Upper House last week, we are now further along the road of getting the law banning the ritual slaughter of animals without prior stunning passed. The senators had many constructive questions on the freedom of religion and the extent to which animal welfare is compromised in slaughter without stunning. I was pleased about that as it gave me an opportunity to once again to explain the justification of ending this exemption that applies to slaughterhouses with a religious affiliation. The debate will be held on 13 December with the actual vote a week later.

Animal broadcaster PiepVandaag has started a petition to convince the members of the Netherlands Upper House to vote for the bill banning slaughter without stunning. The petition can be signed at http://www.piepvandaag.nl/petitie-laat-verbod-onverdoofd-slachten-niet-sneuvelen-in-eerste-kamer/.

This week we opened registration desk for the falsehoods spoken by state secretary Bleker with regard to his agriculture and nature policy. This ‘Bleker’s lie detector’ will form the basis of a black book on the state secretary’s policy. He says, for example, that large-scale sheds benefit animal welfare and other such lies. We call on everyone to report whenever they catch Bleker romanticizing reality.
