Worldlog Settimana 17 – 2011

Questa settimana ho avuto un dibattito di emergenza con il segretario Bleker di Agricoltura, che continua a rifiutare di eseguire le mozioni del Partito per gli Animali, tra quali una mozione mia in favore di un controllo da parte del governo sul trasporto degli animali e i macellai. La mozione richiede che il controllo sugli trasporti di animali non venga più effettuato dall'industria della carne e del bestiame, ma completamente dal governo. Il trasloco degli animali è uno dei problemi più grossi del settore bestiame al momento. Sia il benessere che la salute degli animali sono spesso a rischio. Il segretario ammette che vi siano delle cose incorrette nel settore di trasporto degli animali, ma purtroppo crede ancora nella autoregulazione del settore.

Durante il dibattito il Sig. Bleker ha promesso che richiederà un'indagine sul trasporto della ditta Keus en Mollink, che opera a livello internazionale. Durante il dibattito ho dimostrato al Senato alcune foto per fargli vedere quanto quest'azienda lavora male. Queste foto vengono dal report ‘Inspection of a Dutch transport company loaded with Hungarian cattle in Kapikule, Turkey’ dell'organizzazione per il benessere degli animali, Eyes on Animals. Questa espertissima organizzazione effettua regolarmente delle ispezioni sul trasporto degli animali ed ha già identificato dei problemi durante i trasporto di Keus en Mollink. Nel report che è uscito questa settimana l'organizzazione che tutela il benessere degli animali descrive molte forme di malessere degli animali da loro riscontrate durante le ispezioni. Speriamo che davvero cambierà qualcosa per fermare quest'azienda!

La settimana scorsa abbiamo avuto anche un dibattito molto acceso nei Paesi Bassi sul disegno di legge per un divieto della macellazione senza anestesia rituale. In particolare da parte delle persone religiose vi sono delle critiche per un tale divieto. Ciònonostante sembra che il disegno di legge potrà contare su una maggioranza nel parlamento.

La settimana scorsa un'organizzazione olandese (Nederlandse Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving) ha pubblicato il report "The Protein Puzzle", che punta su un'intervento europeo rapido per diminuire il consumo delle proteine animalesche. Questo è nel favore della salute in generale, il benessere degli animali, l'ambiente e la biodiversità. Potrete scaricare il report qui:

In tre settimane nei Paesi Bassi vi saranno le elezioni per il Senato. Sembra che avremo di nuovo un seggio, ma la coalizione e l'opposizione sono molto vicini. Speriamo tanto per una maggioranza durevole e pro-animali!

This week I had an emergency debate with Bleker, the State Secretary for Agriculture who systematically refuses to implement motions adopted by the Party for the Animals, including my motion for government control on livestock transport and slaughter houses. The motion calls for the control of animal transport to be taken away from the meat and livestock industry and be given to the government. The transport of animals is one of the biggest problems in the livestock sector today. Both animal welfare and health are often seriously compromised. The State recognizes the abuses in the animal transport, but unfortunately still believes in the self-regulation of business.

During the debate Bleker promised to start an investigation into the animal transport company Keus and Mollink. I showed a number of photographs to the House during the debate showing the abuse of this company. These photos are from the report "Inspection of a Dutch transport company loaded with Hungarian cattle in Kapikule, Turkey" from the animal welfare organization Eyes on Animals. This very capable animal welfare organization regularly inspects animal transports and has often reported abuses in shipments by Keus and Mollink. In the report published this week the animal protection organization describes the severe animal cruelty they encountered during the inspections. Again last week there was a stormy debate in the Netherlands on the proposed ban of ritual slaughter, with religious groups making some serious accusations to the proponents of the ban. Nevertheless, it seems that the bill can count on a large majority in parliament.

Last week the Dutch Planning Agency for the Environment published the report The Protein Puzzle, which calls for using the application of European policy to reduce the consumption of animal proteins in the interest of public health, animal welfare, the environment and biodiversity. Incidentally, another tip if you want to draw more attention to the welfare of animals in your native language, speak with kindred spirits and set up Twitter accounts on behalf of certain animal species. We do this in the Netherlands and many animals already have hundreds of followers on Twitter. The animals have their own website where you can follow all the Twitter messages and biographies. http://www.twitterdieren.nl/

There will be Senate elections in the Netherlands in three weeks. It looks as though we will once again win a seat, but it is a neck-and-neck race between the coalition and the opposition. We very much hope for a sustainable and animal-friendly majority!
