Il Partito per gli Animali inglese e’ contento con il risultato delle elezioni
L’otto di giugno il partito per gli animali britannico, l’Animal Welfare Party (AWP), partecipo’ alle elezioni parlamentari. Il partito non e’ riuscito ad ottenere un seggio, ma visto le circostanze politiche nel Regno Unito, si accontenta comunque con l’esito. Il partito ha fatto una scelta strategica di partecipare in quattro aree elettorali: Maidenhead, Hackney South & Shoreditch, Lewisham Deptford e Hackney North & Stoke Newington. L’esito dimostra un aumento nel numero di voti rispetto alle ultime elezioni del 2015.
Il leader del partito, Vanessa Hudson, disse dopo le elezioni: “Siamo contenti dei risultati delle elezioni, visto la natura di queste elezioni e la pressione sentita dalla maggior parte dei partiti piccoli – una pressione che l’AWP non ha sentito. Grazie molte a tutti quelli che hanno votato l’AWP, ai nostri membri ed ai nostri sostenitori!”

Il vecchio sistema elettorale britannico lo rende quasi impossibile per nuovi e piccoli partiti di ottenere un seggio nella Camera Britannica. Il Regno Unito contiene 650 aree elettorali ed ognuno di questi forniscono un membro parlamentare. In un’area elettorale conta solo chi vince; chi ottiene il maggior numero di voti. Anche se i partiti piccoli e nuovi raggiungono molti voti, non vedono cio’ trasformato in un numero di seggi poiche’ spesso non finiscano per prima. In questo modo perdono molti voti e chi vota viene stimolato meno di votare un partito piccolo. Inoltre, l’esito delle elezioni era completamente dominato dalla battaglia tra il presente premier Theresa May con il suo partito conservatore da un lato e Jeremy Corbyn del partito del lavoro (labour) dall’atra parte. Questa situazione ha reso ancora piu’ difficile per l’Animal Welfare Party di ottenere un posto nella Camera.
On 8 June, the British Animal Welfare Party (AWP) entered the 2017 General Election. Despite having gained no seats, the party was still happy with the results given the political situation in the United Kingdom. AWP made the strategic choice to participate in four constituencies: Maidenhead, Hackney South and Shoreditch, Hackney North and Stoke Newington, and Lewisham Deptford. The results have shown an increase in the number of votes in comparison to the previous election in 2015.
After the election, party leader Vanessa Hudson stated: “We are delighted with the results, given the nature of the election and the squeeze felt by most small parties – a squeeze not felt by AWP. Huge huge huge thanks to all who voted for AWP, our members and supporters!”

Britain’s old-fashioned electoral system makes it virtually impossible for new and small parties to gain a seat in the House of Commons. There are 650 constituencies in the United Kingdom, each electing a single Member of Parliament. Only the winner of a constituency, the one with the most votes, counts. As new and small parties are often not the largest parties, despite getting many votes, they do not gain any seats in the House of Commons. This way, many votes are lost and voters have less incentive to vote for small parties. In addition, this General Election has been dominated by the battle between Prime Minister Theresa May and her Conservative Party on the one hand, and Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour Party on the other. This has made it even harder for the Animal Welfare Party to gain seats in the House of Commons.
