Por el momento hay que olvidar el plam de Secretario de estado de agricultura, Bleker, gasificar gansos desde el 1 de Octubre. El Martes 27 de Septiembre una gran nayoría de la Segunda Cámara votó a favor de nuestra moción de no gasificar gansos por lo menos hasta el 1 de Enero del 2012. El Gabinete desea introducir rapidamente una ley que declara libres al os gansos salvajes.

La gasificación de gansos significaría apresar grandes grupos de gansos y gasificarlos con biocidos en espacios móviles. La gasificación significa que los animales se ahogan y tratan de escapar, sólo pierden el sentido después de 1 minuto y mantiene la actividad cerebral durante 2 a 3 minutos. Encontramos inaceptable este sufrimiento. Además diversas investigaciones muestran que ésto no tiene sentido. La populación no se mide matando gansos, sino en la oferta de alimentos. Y ésta continuará igual en Holanda.

El apoyo de una mayoría de la Cámara lo recibimos también gracias a una e-mail actividad de la organización juvenil PINK!. En la actividad de e-mail 'No dejes que los gansos sufran' la gente pudo pedir a todos los representantes de agricultura en la Segunda Cámara que voten a favor de nuestra moción y por lo tanto, contra la planeada gasificación de gansos. Y qué estupendo resultado en sólo unos pocos días: más de 11.000 mails de protesta volaron en 'formación-V' en los correos electrónicos de las representantes de agricultura. Juntos hemos conseguido despertar la política y que los gansos estén seguros por el momento. Ahora se trata de una postergación de la ejecución, ¡haremos lo posible para ofrecerles protección permanente!.

El 29 de Septiembre la Cámara organizó un debate con el biólogo marino Dr. Rainer Froese, ligado al Instituto-Leipniz en Kiel, Alemania, la previsión de pesca en Europa. El informó que las proposiciones de reforma de pesca en Europa son mantenidas sistemáticamente al borde del abismo. El Partido para los Animales había invitado al biólogo marino para una conversación con motivo de su investi- gación en cooperación con el importante biólogo de pesca Dr. Daniel Pauly. Froese y Pauly trabajaron juntos en la investigación del llamado 'Fishing down the Foodweb', de la que se deduce que la sobreproducción pesquera conduce a una espriral descendente que que debilita todos los sistemas-eco marinos.

Dentro de poco la Cámara conversará con el Secretario de Estado Bleker sobre la participación holandesa en los debates europeos sobre las reformas en la pesca. Esther Ouwehand trataráade convencerlos de poner seguro el futuro de nuestros mares y oceános y no caer en la tentación de ganancias económicas en corto plazo.

State Secretary and Minister of Agriculture Blekers’ plans to gas geese as of 1 October have encountered a temporary setback. On Tuesday 27 September, the large majority of the Lower House voted for one of our motions to not gas any geese until 1 January 2012. The cabinet wanted to quickly introduce a bill as of 1 October that would outlaw wild geese without substantive discussion.

Gassing geese would mean that large groups of moulting geese would be caught in mobile spaces and gassed with biocides. Gassing means the animals gasp for air and try to escape, and they only lose consciousness after 1 minute and maintain brain activity for 2 to 3 minutes. We find this suffering to be unacceptable. Moreover, various studies have shown that this form of cull serves no purpose. It is not goose death that determines population size, but the food supply and food will remain plentiful in the Netherlands because we over-fertilise.

We got a majority behind us partially due to an e-mail campaign by our youth organisation PINK!. The email promotion titled 'Don't let the geese choke' let people email every agricultural spokesperson in the Lower House to spur them to vote for our motion and therefore against the planned goose gassing. We had such a wonderful result in just a few days' time: more then 11,000 protest emails flew in a 'V' formation to the agricultural spokespersons' inboxes. By working together we have ensured that we shook politics awake and the geese are safe, for now. A stay of execution is now on the table, we will do all we can to offer the geese lasting protection!

On 29 September the Chamber organised a hearing with marine biologist Dr Rainer Froese, tied to the Leipniz-Institute in Kiel, Germany, on European fisheries policy. He argued that in European reform proposals, fish stocks are systematically kept on the brink of collapse. The Party for the Animals invited the marine biologist to the conversation because of his pioneering research in collaboration with leading fisheries biologist Dr Daniel Pauly. Froese and Pauly worked together on researching what they call 'Fishing Down the Foodweb', which has proved that overfishing quickly leads to a downwards spiral that will collapse the entire marine ecosystem.

The Cabinet will soon speak with State Secretary Bleker about the Dutch effort in the European fishery reform discussions. My colleague Esther Ouwehand will impress on him that we need to secure the future of our seas and oceans and not buckle to the lobby over short-term economic gain.
