Worldlog Semana 23 – 2014
La semana pasada era ya casi seguro, pero ahora que por fin podemos anunciarlo: nos vamos a Bruselas! Con 4,2% de los votos, tenemos un asiento bien ganado en el Parlamento Europeo, donde Anja Hazekamp va a luchar por los intereses de los animales, la naturaleza y el medio ambiente durante los próximos cinco años. Nuestros empujadores que son líderes de opinión conocidos, actores y escritores como Redmond O’Hanlon e Ingrid Newkirk han logrado conseguir votos de preferencia. Estamos muy orgullosos! También estamos muy contentos de que nuestro partido hermano en Alemania, el Tierschutz Partei, haya ganado un lugar en el parlamento Europeo. El primero de julio va a empezar el trabajo de verdad. Mucho éxito Anja!
Buenas noticias también desde el Parlamento. El ministro de estado de Asuntos Económicos ha iniciado desde ahora una prohibición provisional inmediata del uso de pesticidas metan-sodio. El metan-sodio es altamente controversial debido a los altos riesgos que tiene para los seres humanos y el medio ambiente. Es un fumigante de suelos altamente tóxico que se utiliza en, entre otras cosas, la producción de lirios y fresas. Puede dañar seriamente la salud de los vivientes cercanos y transeúntes confirma un panel de expertos de los plaguicidas admisión de la universidad y los biocidas. La gente puede llegar a un edema agudo de pulmón y síntomas respiratorios crónicos desarrollan. Con la medida cautelar, el Estado cumple en parte nuestra llamada que exige una acción contra este veneno peligroso.

Una triste noticia desde Dinamarca. Tres daneses murieron después de haber sido infectados con la bacteria antibiótica-residente MRSA, proveniente de los cerdos. Lean aquí toda la historia. Aquí resulta una vez más la necesidad de parar con el encierro en masa de animales, para evitar que salgan epidemias de animales con consecuencias altas para personas y animales.
Perros y gatos de raza tienen más problemas de salud que los perros y gatos ‘comunes’. Esto resulta de una investigación hecha por la Universidad de Utrecht. La investigación fue realizada después de mi moción en la Cámara, que llama a una ampliación y aceleración de la investigación de problemas de bienestar en los perros de raza en cuanto a trastornos hereditarios.
Según el estudio entre otros perros los labradores sufren a menudo de enfermedades de los codos y las caderas que los perros sin raza. También el Chihuahua y Bulldog Francés sufren a una edad temprana de problemas de hueso y los gatos Persianos sufren más de defectos oculares, renales y de la piel.
El estudio muestra que los perros y gatos de raza sufren defectos genéticos graves. Es francamente inmoral para seleccionar puro sin tener en cuenta el bienestar de los animales. Aquí tenemos que hacer un fin tan pronto como sea posible. Los resultados del estudio serán discutidos próximamente en la Cámara.

It was already almost certain last week, but now it is definitive: we are going to Brussels! With 4.2 % of the votes, we have secured an ample seat in the European Parliament, where Anja Hazekamp will fight for the interests of animals, nature and the environment for the next five years. Our other popular candidates on the bottom of the party list – well-known opinion leaders, actors and authors, such as Redmond O’Hanlon and Ingrid Newkirk – have received a huge number of preferential votes. Very proud!
We are also very happy that our sister party in Germany, the Tierschutzpartei, has also secured a seat. On 1 July, all Euro MPs will be sworn in and the actual work will then begin. Best of luck, Anja!
There is also good news from the Lower House. The State Secretary of Economic Affairs has placed a temporary ban with immediate effect on the usage of the pesticide metam sodium. Metam sodium is extremely controversial because of its major risks to humans and the environment. It is a very poisonous soil disinfectant, which is used, among others, in the cultivation of lilies and strawberries. The substance can seriously harm the health of local residents and passers-by, as was confirmed by an expert panel of the College Admission Pesticides and Biocides. People may incur acute pulmonary oedema or develop chronic respiratory issues. With the temporary ban, the State Secretary partially meets our call to demand action against this dangerous poison.

Sad news from Denmark. Three Danes died after they were infected by the antibiotics-resistant MRSA bacteria, which come from swines. Read the whole story here. This again shows the necessity of stopping to lock up animals in bulk, to prevent animal disease outbreaks with serious consequences for humans and animals.
Research conducted by Utrecht University has shown that pedigree dogs and cats have more health issues than ‘ordinary’ dogs and cats. The investigation was conducted after I tabled a motion in the House, calling for broader and swifter research into welfare issues in pedigree dogs with hereditary conditions.
The research has shown that Labradors, among other breeds, suffer from elbow and hip issues more often than crossings of non-pedigree dogs. Also, Chihuahuas and French Bulldogs suffer more from joint problems at a young age, and Persian cats have more abnormalities of the eyes, kidneys and skin compared to ordinary cats.
The research has proven that pedigree dogs and cats suffer severely from genetic defects. It is downright unethical to select purely on the basis of looks without taking into account the animals’ welfare. We must end this as soon as possible. The research results will be discussed in the Lower House soon.
