Ya falta poco para que abran de nuevo las urnas en Holanda. El 15 de marzo se celebran las elecciones generales al parlamento y el Partido por los Animales, por supuesto, vuelve a presentarse. Durante las próximas semanas vamos a volcarnos en la campaña para dar a conocer a todo el mundo nuestro programa electoral, “Plan B”, porque no hay un planeta B.
Una vez más vuelvo a tener el honor de encabezar la lista del Partido por los Animales. En las próximas entradas del blog tendrás ocasión de leer todo tipo de noticias sobre nuestra campaña y las acciones que vamos a realizar. Gracias a una petición muy compartida, la semana pasada hubo gran revuelo sobre la Gonadotrofina Corionica Equina, también conocida como PMSG, una hormona presente en la sangre de las yeguas embarazadas empleada, entre otros sitios, en las industrias ganaderas de Holanda y Alemania para incrementar la fertilidad de los animales. Para obtener la hormona se extraen grandes cantidades de sangre de las yeguas en condiciones extremadamente duras.
Nuestro grupo europeo ha denunciado este abuso en distintas ocasiones, como se puede leer aquí y aquí. Tras las preguntas parlamentarias del Partido de los Animales acerca de la cuestión, el gobierno holandés también va a apostar ahora por la prohibición de estas prácticas.
En solo una semana, 1,5 millones de ciudadanos europeos firmaron la petición para la prohibición de la hormona PMSG.
Hace ahora exactamente un siglo, las mujeres holandesas obtuvieron el derecho al voto. Para celebrar esta efeméride, el artista Joost Veerkamp me ha hecho este retrato.
Hoy, cien años después, todavía no se ha completado la emancipación de la mujer. Los ingresos de hombres y mujeres, por ejemplo, siguen siendo distintos, incluso con igualdad de nivel formativo y capacidades. En muchos sectores empresariales sigue imperando una ética laboral que hace muy difícil para las mujeres (y los hombres) combinar el trabajo con el cuidado de los hijos.
Basta con mirar a la política. En Holanda, el número de mujeres en el parlamento sigue siendo inferior a la mitad. De los diecisiete presidentes de grupo parlamentario, yo soy la única mujer. La política parece ser una actividad para hombres donde las mujeres, si bien es cierto que se toleran, desempeñan un papel secundario.
Yo siempre me he inspirado mucho en la “política expresiva” del primer movimiento de emancipación: denunciar las injusticias, adoptar puntos de vista basados en principios y ejercer una influencia sustancial en la agenda política. Cuando entramos en el parlamento con el Partido por los Animales, el bienestar animal era una cuestión irrelevante. Ahora es una preocupación ampliamente compartida. ¡Espero que muchas mujeres nuevas obtengan un escaño en el parlamento!

It will not be long before elections will take place again in the Netherlands. The national elections for the Lower House of Parliament will be held on 15 March. The Party for the Animals will of course participate as well! We will actively campaign the next few weeks to introduce to everyone our election programme ‘Plan B’ because there is no Planet B.

Thanks to a petition that was greatly shared, commotion was caused last week about the Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG). PMSG is a hormone made of the blood of pregnant mares that is used in the Dutch and German livestock industry among other countries to improve the reproduction of animals. To produce the hormone large volumes of blood are extracted from pregnant mares under severe conditions.
Our European group already raised this subject a few times, see here and here. Following Parliamentary Questions raised by the Party for the Animals, the Dutch government will start to work actively on the banning of PMSG.
In only one week’s time, the petition to ban PMSG was signed by over 1.5 million European citizens.
Exactly one hundred year ago, the women in the Netherlands were given the right to vote. In celebration of this anniversary, the artist Joost Veerkamp made the following portrait of me.
Now, one hundred years later, women’s emancipation has not finished yet. For example, the incomes of women and men are still not equal, not even if they have the same education and capacities. In many branches of industry, there is a work ethic that makes it difficult for women (en men) to combine work and care.
Take politics for instance. In the Netherlands, the number of women in the Lower House is still less than half. Out of 17 party chairmen I am the only female leading candidate. Politics seems to be for men only, where women are tolerated but play a minor role.
Personally, I have always been very inspired by the expressive politics of the first emancipation movements: expose abuses, adopt basic positions, and to have a great impact on the political agenda. Animal welfare was irrelevant at the time that we, with the Party for the Animals, entered the Lower House, but these days it is a broadly shared concern. I hope that many new women will join the Lower House!
