We have had another wonderful party congress! At this congress, the list of candidates for the municipal elections in the Dutch municipality of Groningen was established. Niko Koffeman, senator and founder of the Party for the Animals, discussed the work of the party’s scientific bureau, NGPF. Politics should be more about the power of the idea and less about the idea of power, Niko said.
Political scientist and author of De Voedselparadox (the food paradox) Herman Lelieveldt was a guest speaker at the congress. He talked about how politicians pass on all responsibility for food that is friendly to the environment, people and animals, to consumers, even though consumers cannot possibly compete with the powerful and massive companies. Instead of using national regulations to support major polluters, we should deploy these regulations to protect our planet and all its inhabitants.
Party for the Animals Congress
I concluded the congress with a speech in which I announced that at the start of 2019, we will launch a new documentary on the consumption of animal products as the leading cause of many major problems. But it will also offer solutions to these problems. In 2007, our documentary Meat the Truth already caused quite a stir in the political sphere and the agricultural sector. The facts presented in the documentary about the devastating effects of the agricultural system on our planet were met with disbelief.
Today, these facts are common knowledge and even an important advisory council for the government is calling for a radical change in farming policy. With our new documentary, we want to show the world that the problems caused by the meat and dairy industry have only increased since 2007. The livestock lobby is one of the most powerful lobby groups in the world and it is only trying to increase its influence on the existing system. You can count on us to not shy away from uncomfortable truths in our new documentary. The conclusions will be at least as shocking as those in our last documentary.
Meat the Truth documentary
There is a great need for change, and this change needs to come from the bottom up, from advocates such as the Party for the Animals. And it has already begun. Since 2006, the number of vegans in England have increased by 350%. Vegan food has become fashionable. We are part of a major social movement, a movement that is on the winning side. A movement with radical criticism of our current system, but which also provides real sustainable solutions. We raise awareness of a new, higher interest that is planet-wide and transcends the divisions of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age and social class.
Between 20 and 24 June, delegations of our sister parties from all over the world – from Australia to Canada – will travel to Brussels and The Hague. Some organisations from e.g. Morocco and Turkey will also be present. Together, we will discuss how to address the issues in the livestock industry, live transports and all those other atrocities. On 22 June, I will give a lecture as part of this meeting at Leiden University in The Hague. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public, but the number of tickets still available is limited. You can book your tickets here. A great success for our European group: a majority of the European Parliament has supported the Party for the Animals’ proposal to stop subsidising bullfighting via the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). It is estimated that currently, millions of euros end up with breeders of fighting bulls each year.
Lastly, a success in the Dutch parliament: thanks to a widely supported motion of the Party for the Animals, the government must show how it endeavours to eliminate palm oil as a fuel. The Netherlands is Europe’s largest importer of palm oil and this has to stop. After all, the production of palm oil involves widespread destruction of habitats, rainforests and bogs. An area of rainforest the size of a million football pitches is cleared each year to produce palm oil, causing the orangutan and Sumatran tiger to be at significant risk of extinction. We will do everything in our power to halt the import of palm oil as soon as possible.

Nós tivemos mais uma vez um congresso maravilhoso do Partido para os Animais! Neste congresso, a lista de candidatos para as eleições municipais no município holandês de Groningen foi estabelecida. Niko Koffeman, senador e fundador do Partido para os Animais, discutiu o trabalho do departamento científico do partido, o NGPF. A política deveria ser mais sobre o poder da ideia e menos sobre a ideia de poder, disse Niko.
O cientista político e autor de De Voedselparadox (O Paradoxo da Comida), Herman Lelieveldt foi orador convidado no congresso. Ele falou sobre como os políticos transmitem toda a responsabilidade por alimentos que são amigáveis ao meio ambiente, às pessoas e aos animais, aos consumidores, embora os consumidores não possam concorrer com as empresas poderosas e gigantescas. E em vez de usar regulamentações nacionais para apoiar grandes poluidores, devemos implantar essas regulamentações para proteger nosso planeta e todos os seus habitantes.
Festa pelo Congresso dos Animais
Eu concluí o congresso com um discurso no qual anunciei que no início de 2019, lançaremos um novo documentário sobre o consumo de produtos de origem animal como a principal causa de muitos problemas importantes em nosso planeta. Mas também oferecerá soluções para esses problemas. Em 2007, nosso documentário Meat the Truth já causou grande agitação na esfera política e no setor agrícola. Os fatos apresentados no documentário sobre os efeitos devastadores do sistema agrícola em nosso planeta foram recebidos com descrença.
Hoje, esses fatos são de conhecimento comum e até mesmo um importante conselho consultivo para o governo, e que exige uma mudança radical na política agrícola. Com nosso novo documentário, queremos mostrar ao mundo que os problemas causados pela indústria de carne e laticínios só aumentaram desde 2007. O lobby da pecuária é um dos grupos de lobby mais poderosos do mundo e está apenas a tentar aumentar sua influência no sistema existente. Você pode contar conosco para não fugir das verdades desconfortáveis em nosso novo documentário. As conclusões serão pelo menos tão chocantes quanto as do nosso último documentário.

Há uma grande necessidade de mudança, e essa mudança precisa vir de baixo para cima, de defensores como o Partido para os Animais. E isso já começou. Desde 2006, o número de veganos na Inglaterra aumentou em 350%. A comida vegana tornou-se moda. Somos parte de um grande movimento social, um movimento que está do lado vencedor. Um movimento com críticas radicais ao nosso sistema atual, mas que também oferece soluções reais e sustentáveis. Aumentamos a conscientização sobre um interesse novo e mais alto que é planetário e transcende as divisões de gênero, etnia, religião, orientação sexual, idade e classe social.
Entre os dias 20 e 24 de junho, as delegações de nossos partidos irmãos de todo o mundo – da Austrália ao Canadá – viajarão para Bruxelas e Haia. Algumas organizações, como por exemplo, a de Marrocos e Turquia também estarão presentes. Juntos, discutiremos como lidar com as questões da indústria pecuária, transportes de animais vivos e todas as outras atrocidades. No dia 22 de junho, darei uma palestra como parte desta reunião na Universidade de Leiden, em Haia. A palestra é gratuita e aberta ao público, mas o número de ingressos ainda disponíveis é limitado. Um grande sucesso para o nosso grupo europeu: a maioria do Parlamento Europeu apoiou a proposta do Partido para os Animais de parar de subsidiar as touradas através da Política Agrícola Comum (PAC) da UE. Estima-se que, atualmente, milhões de euros acabam com criadores de touros de luta a cada ano.
Por fim, um sucesso no parlamento holandês: graças a um movimento amplamente apoiado pelo Partido para os Animais, o governo deve mostrar como ira se esforçar para eliminar o óleo de palma como combustível. A Holanda é o maior importador europeu de óleo de palma e isso tem que parar. Afinal, a produção de óleo de palma envolve a destruição generalizada de habitats, florestas tropicais e pântanos. Uma área de floresta tropical do tamanho de um milhão de campos de futebol é limpa a cada ano para produzir óleo de palma, fazendo com que o orangotango e o tigre de Sumatra corram risco significativo de extinção. Faremos tudo o que estiver ao nosso alcance para deter a importação de óleo de palma o mais rápido possível.
