O partido australiano para os animais exige uma proibição total da exportação de animais vivos
24 April 2018 – More than twee weeks ago, videos from a whistleblower exposed serious cruelty in Australian sheep exports, where thousands of animals died an awful death because of the heat and stress. The videos caused a shock wave throughout Australia and beyond. The Animal Justice Party (AJP), the Australian party for the animals, is demanding a total ban of the export of live animals and asks people all over the world to sign their petition to enforce changes to the policy and law. Meanwhile, international support has come for AJP’s call.
Every year, 6.5 million Australian sheep are shipped to the Middle East and Africa, where they will ultimately be slaughtered. The animals are crammed together on a transport vessel for two months with little food or water, at temperatures that may exceed 40 oC. Such vessel can hold at least 20,000 sheep and it takes 1 to 4 days to load it. During the sea voyage, any dead, dying, sick or wounded sheep are thrown into milling machines and their remains are dumped in the sea. The circumstances on board of these vessels are incredibly cruel. The whistleblower’s videos show, for example, how the terrified sheep are swimming in the excrements and urine of the sheep on the upper floors. On average 8% of the animals will not survive such a gruelling voyage. Others become crippled or get the painful virus infection ecthyma, which is also called “scabby mouth”.
The Animal Justice Party (AJP) and animal rights organisations emphasise that it’s not an incident on the videos but that this is customary practice in the entire cattle transport. The AJP, the Australian party for the animals, has been fighting against cattle transports for years and tries to put the larger parties under pressure to collaborate in changing the legislation and policy in respect of cattle transports and animal welfare. Between August 2018 and May 2019, federal elections will be held in Australia and the AJP thinks that it will gain several seats. “We will not stop until we see a complete ban on live animal exports. As Australia’s only political party for animals, we will continue to relentlessly put pressure on Labor and Liberal Members of Parliament and candidates to acknowledge that changing the law to ban live animal exports is not only the best option for animals, but for everyone involved. Sheep are intelligent, affectionate, inquisitive, emotional beings, born into a situation they didn’t choose. They don’t have the power to get out of these situations – but we have the power to help them – and we owe them nothing less than whatever it takes to end their pain and suffering, and create a world where they are protected from cruelty and indifference,” says AJP.
24 de abril de 2018 – há mais que duas semanas passadas um denunciante expôs com imagens de vídeo abusos graves na exportação de ovelhas da Austrália mostrando milhares de animais morrendo horrivelmente por causa do calor e do estresse. As imagens causaram uma onda de choque dentro e fora da Austrália. O partido australiano para os animais, Animal Justice Party (AJP) exige uma proibição total da exportação de animais vivos e pede aos cidadãos do mundo inteiro assinar sua petição para realizar mudanças na lei e na política. No meio tempo houve apoio internacional à chamada do AJP.
Cada ano 6,5 milhões de ovelhas australianas são exportadas por via marítima para o Oriente Médio e a Africa onde serão matadas. Os animais são confinados por até dois meses em navios de transporte com pouca água e comida e com temperaturas que podem exceder 40 ºC . No mínimo 20.000 ovelhas cabem nestes navios e só o carregamento já demora entre 1 e 4 dias. Durante a viagem marítima os animais que morreram, estão morrendo, doentes ou feridos são jogados em máquinas moedoras e os restantes são despejados no mar. O horror das circunstâncias a bordo destes navios é inimaginável. As imagens de vídeo do denunciante mostram por exemplo como ovelhas apavoradas nadam nos excrementos dos animais enclausurados nos pavimentos situados acima. Uma média de 8% dos animais não sobrevive esta viagem infernal. Outros acabam aleijados ou pegam a dolorosa infecção virulenta ectima também chamada “scabby mouth” (boca escabrosa).
Animal Justice Party (AJP) e organizações para os direitos animais enfatizam que as imagens não mostram um incidente mas a prática usual na totalidade dos transportes de gado. Já há anos que o partido australiano para os animais AJP luta contra os transportes de gado e tenta pressionar os partidos maiores a colaborar numa mudança legislativa e política com relação aos transportes de gado e o bem-estar animal. Entre agosto de 2018 e maio de 2019 serão efetuadas eleições federais na Austrália e o AJP acha que então poderá conquistar mais cadeiras. No meio tempo o partido chama todos aqueles no mundo que são a favor de uma sociedade justa a assinar a petição contra os transportes de gado o que pode ser feito aqui.
“Nós não vamos parar antes de ver uma proibição total da exportação de animais vivos. Sendo o único partido político para os animais na Austrália, nós continuaremos a pressionar implacavelmente os membros trabalhistas e liberais do Parlamento assim como os candidatos a reconhecer que mudar a lei afim de proibir a exportação de animais vivos é a melhor opção não só para os animais mas para todos os envolvidos. Ovelhas são seres inteligentes, afetuosos, inquisitivos, emocionais, nascidos numa situação que não foi sua própria escolha. Eles não têm o poder de sair destas situações – mas nós temos o poder de ajudá-los – e nós lhes devemos nada menos que, seja o que for preciso, terminar sua dor e seu sofrimento e criar um mundo onde eles são protegidos contra a crueldade e a indiferença,” diz AJP.
