Worldlog Week 45 – 2012

In mijn Worldlog van deze week een uitgebreider verslag van ons 10-jarig jubileumfeestje vorige week zondag. Nogmaals wil ik benadrukken wat een mooie en gezellige dag dit was. Toen ik samen met 3 andere mensen de Partij voor de Dieren oprichtte werd met de nodige scepsis gereageerd vanuit de traditionele politiek. Maar al spoedig bleken we als haas in de marathon te fungeren. En dat doen we nog steeds!

Bij dezen een klein stukje uit mijn toespraak:
Vandaag is het exact tien jaar geleden dat we met een heel klein clubje mensen, een kwartier voor de deadline van de Kiesraad, de Partij voor de Dieren oprichtten. Niet wetend, wat je allemaal over je heen trekt wanneer je een politieke partij opricht. Nu, tien jaar later, ben ik heel blij wat ervan gekomen is. Dat we elkaar hebben leren kennen. Dat we onze zorgen over dieren, natuur en milieu niet hebben laten verworden tot onmacht en frustratie, maar hebben omgezet in strijdbaarheid en gezamenlijke actie.

Tijdens het feestje ging ook de film ‘De Haas in de Marathon’, over 10 jaar Partij voor de Dieren in première. Geweldig! In opdracht van ons wetenschappelijk bureau maakte filmmaker Joost de Haas een film over de partij. In de film zitten interviews met de oprichters van onze partij en reacties uit de wetenschap, de politiek en de media op onze nieuwe politieke stroming. De film is voornamelijk in het Nederlands. Mocht je het toch leuk vinden om ‘m te zien, de trailer staat op onze website. De film is binnenkort te bestellen in onze webwinkel.

Verder waren er twee zeer inspirerende gastsprekers. De bekende Canadese politiek filosoof Will Kymlicka hield een lezing over zijn in 2011 gepubliceerde boek Zoopolis. Het baanbrekende boek Zoopolis gaat in op de politieke theorie over dierenrechten. Hij past daarin het concept 'burgerschap' toe op dieren – met een verrassende uitkomst. Als je het nog niet gelezen hebt, een aanrader!

Daarnaast was ook hoogleraar rechtswetenschap én lijstduwer van het eerste uur Paul Cliteur aanwezig. Hij hield een lezing over ons wetsvoorstel voor een verbod op onverdoofd ritueel slachten en plaatste het debat daarover in een brede maatschappelijke context. Paul Cliteur geeft aan: “Als mensen vinden dat beleving van religie gepaard moet gaan met lijden, laat het dan hun eigen lijden zijn.”

In de Tweede Kamer ging het werk gewoon door. Het nieuwe kabinet Rutte heeft haar plannen gepresenteerd en afgelopen dinsdag was er daarom een formatiedebat. Mijn complimenten over het tempo waarin de beide informateurs het kabinet in elkaar gespijkerd hebben. Je kunt van vegetariërs veel zeggen, maar niet dat ze traag werken 🙂 . Maar, snelheid is zeker niet het enige criterium dat beoordeling verdient. Naast de kritiek die wij hebben op het akkoord, zijn we heel blij met het verbod op wilde dieren in circussen en de strengere straffen die komen voor dierenbeulen. Het is de derde maal sinds 2006 dat er überhaupt over dierenwelzijn gesproken wordt in een regeerakkoord en het getuigt absoluut van moed bij de opstellers om de smalende reacties van de mensen die niets met het welzijn van dieren hebben te weerstaan. Een groot compliment is hier op zijn plaats!

Collega Esther Ouwehand heeft deze week Kamervragen gesteld over apen die op wrede wijze worden afgemaakt in een proefdierfokkerij. De British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection heeft bekend gemaakt dat ‘overtollige’ apen in een proefdierfokkerij van Noveprim Ltd op Mauritius op wrede wijze zijn afgemaakt, in bakken gedumpt en verbrand. Echt gruwelijk en ongelofelijk dat een proefdierfokker overschotten aan dieren laat ontstaan om deze dieren vervolgens op brute wijze af te maken. Wij willen onder andere dat er gekeken wordt of de Nederlandse apenhandelaar R.C. Hartelust BV ook apen van de apenfokkerijen op Mauritius koopt.

In last week's Worldlog I gave a more comprehensive report of our 10 year anniversary party held on Sunday of last week. I would once again like to say just how nice and convivial day this was. When I founded the Party for the Animals along with three other people, the world of traditional politics reacted with its usual scepticism. But we soon proved to the front runner in the race. And we still are!

Here is a short excerpt from my speech:
Today it is exactly ten years ago that our small group of people founded the Party for the Animals just 15 minutes before the Electoral Council deadline. We had no idea the things we would have to deal with in setting up a political party. Now, ten years later, I'm pleased with what we've made of it. That we got to know each other. That we did not let our concerns about animals, nature and the environment degenerate into powerlessness and frustration, but turned them into militancy and communal action.

We also premiered our film ‘The Hare in the Marathon', about the Party for the Animals’ 10 years of existence. Wonderful! Filmmaker Joost de Haas made a film about our party under commission from our scientific agency. In film contains interviews with our party's founders and reactions from the scientific, political, and media communities to our new political movement. The film is primarily in Dutch. We also had two inspiring guest speakers. Well-known Canadian political philosopher Will Kymlicka held a talk about his book 'Zoopolis' which was published in 2011. His groundbreaking book 'Zoopolis' discusses political theory on animal rights. In his book he applies the concept of 'citizenship' to animals – with surprising results. If you haven't read it yet, we really recommend it!

Plus Paul Cliteur, Professor of Jurisprudence and someone who's been there from the very beginning, was also there. He held a lecture about our legislative proposal to ban unanaesthetised ritual slaughter and placed the debate in a broader social context. Paul Cliteur says: “If people think that experiencing religion must be paired with suffering, then let it be their own suffering.”

Work continues in the Lower House. The new Rutte cabinet has presented its plans and so last Tuesday we held a formation debate. My compliments on the pace in which both informants hammered the cabinet together. You can say a lot about vegetarians, but not that they work slowly 🙂 . However, speed definitely not the only criteria that warrants assessment. Aside from the criticism we have for the Accord, we're very happy with the ban on wild animals in circuses and the more stringent punishments for cruelty to animals. This is the third time since 2006 that animal welfare has been discussed in a coalition agreement, and it bears absolute witness to the courage of the founders against the scornful comments from people who have nothing to do with animal welfare. My sincerest compliments are in order here!

My colleague Esther Ouwehand asked parliamentary questions this week about apes being cruelly slaughtered in a laboratory animal breeding facility. The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection announced that ‘surplus’ apes in Noveprim Ltd's laboratory animal breeding facility on Mauritius were being killed in a cruel way, dumped in containers, then burned. It is truly gruesome and unbelievable that a laboratory animal breeder can allow an animal surplus to occur and then kill them in such a brutal way. We want to look into such things as whether Dutch ape trader R.C. Hartelust BV also buys apes from the ape breeder on Mauritius.

And to conclude: Australia has dedicated an entire website to our film, Meat the Truth! So great to see!
