Worldlog Settimana 40 – 2008

La settimana scorsa è stata fondata un ente televisivo pubblico che vuole concentrarsi sugli animali, la natura e l’ambiente. Quest’ente televisivo si chiama Piep e viene condotto da Karen Soeters, la direttrice della Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation e capo progetto di Meat the Truth.
In solo una settimana già 1000 membri si sono iscritti. Il 1 aprile 2009 ci vorranno 50.000 membri per ottenere una licenza dallo Stato olandese, il che è necessario per poter trasmettere programmi nella radio e la televisione olandese.
Sarebbe bello se nel primo paese nel mondo che ha in parlamento un Partito per gli Animali, ci fosse anche il primo ente televisivo pubblico, fondato specialmente per valorizzare gli animali nella radio e in TV.
D’altronde, quest’ente televisivo è una proposta totalmente indipendente e segue la sua politica autonoma. Ne sono molto contenta però e mi sono subito iscritta la settimana scorsa.

Ogni anno più di 75.000 cani e gatti trovano rifugio in centri di accoglienza. Per quel che riguarda i roditori, conigli ed altre specie, non si sa quanti ce ne sono accolti. Per questi animali spesso non esistono disposizioni strutturali. Poi, i rifugi e centri di accoglienza particolari che si sono pure caricati di questo compito sono spesso abbandonati alla loro sorte.
Una mancanza di denaro, problemi di capacità, una mancanza di personale: questi problemi sono all’ordine del giorno nei vari centri di accoglienza di animali in Olanda. I rifugi per cani e gatti sono pieni ogni estate e per tante specie animali non ci sono quasi possibilità di accoglierli. L’attuale politica degli oggetti trovati, che costringe i comuni a ‘conservare’ gli animali erranti durante quattordici giorni, si è rivelata insufficiente da tanti anni per provvedere al grande bisogno di posti di accoglienza. La natura transcomunale della problematica in materia di accoglienza richiede un’attenzione nazionale. Perciò, il Partito per gli Animali sta sviluppando una proposta per organizzare meglio il metodo di lavoro.

Uno degli elementi ai quali presteremo attenzione in ogni caso è un fondo di accoglienza nel quale gli allevatori e negozi di animali verseranno un contributo per ogni animale venduto. Poi, presenteremo delle proposte per la presa di misure miranti a combattere l’acquisto impulsivo di animali. Il settore dovrebbe assumere la sua responsabilità nella problematica. Collocando dei coniglietti bellini all’altezza degli occhi dei bambini, i venditori provocano consapevolmente degli acquisti impulsivi, e tutte le conseguenze che ne sono derivate. Con i millioni di euro guadagnati con la vendita di animali di compagnia, i negozi di animali e di giardinaggio possono facilmente versare un contributo in un fondo per l’accoglienza di animali.
Più tardi nell’anno, il Partito per gli Animali organizzerà un’audienza permettendo ai delegati dei vari centri di accoglienza di animali di condividere direttamente la loro conoscenza e le loro esperienze con i deputati. Presenteremo probabilmente questa proposta al Parlamento all’inizio del prossimo anno.

Il 2 ottobre è stato organizzato ad Amsterdam il grande Ballo per gli Animali, il cui scopo era quello di fermare l’attenzione sulla situazione difficile nella quale si trovano gli animali. Io stessa non ho potuto assisterci, per causa della prima rappresentazione di Meat the Truth a Hollywood, la scorsa fine settimana. Ho appena appreso che il film, oltre all’Artivist Festival, è anche stato nominato per 3 altri festival cinematografici internazionali. Ve ne informerò fra poco.

Last week in Holland there was a public channel set up that wants to draw the needs of animals, nature and the environment to the public’s attention. The channel is called Piep, and is led by Karen Soeters, director of the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation, the project leader of Meat the Truth.
In one weeks time 1000 people joined, the channel needs 50,000 members to get a license on the 1st of April, 2009 from the Dutch government to broadcast on Dutch radio and TV.
It is very good that the first country in the world who has a Party for the Animals in parliament, could possibly be the first public channel in the world that is specially focused on the rights of animals on radio and TV.
The channel is also a completely independent initiative, with an independent vision. I am very happy about this and last week I immediately became a member.

Every year in Holland more than 75,000 dogs and cats are taken into animal shelters. The number of rodents, rabbits and other animals who end up in animal shelters is unknown. There are almost no structural provisions for these animals. The animal shelters and private shelters who do this work are very often left to fend for themselves.
Lack of funds, lack of space, shortage of employees: this has become the norm in many animal shelters in Holland. Animal shelters for dogs and cats are full every summer and for many types of animals there are hardly any options. The present lost items policy of the city councils where stray animals must be ‘kept’ for fourteen days, has been insufficient for years in dealing with the growing need. The nature of the animal shelter problem goes beyond city limits and requires national attention. The Party for the Animals is therefore working on an initiative to find a better approach.

Elements that will definitely be present in the initiative are a shelter fund where breeders and pet shops must contribute an amount for every animal they sell and suggestions for measures to prevent the impulse purchase of animals. The sector must be held responsible for it’s share in the problem. By placing cuddly little rabbits at children’s eye level, they are willfully promoting impulse purchases, with drastic consequences. From the millions that are earned by the sale of pets, pet shops and garden centers can afford to make a contribution to the fund for the shelter costs of animals.
The Party for the Animals will organize a hearing later this year so that representatives from different animal shelters can directly share their knowledge and experiences with members of Parliament. The plan is expected to be sent to Parliament at the beginning of next year.

The Dierenbal (Animal Gala) was held in Amsterdam on October 2nd to draw attention to the serious situation that animals are in. I wasn’t able to attend because Meat the Truth made it’s Hollywood premiere last week. I have just heard that, besides the Artivist festival, the film has also been selected and/or nominated for 3 other international film festivals. More information to follow.
