La settimana scorsa c’è stata molta discussione sui progetti di gassare migliaia di oche nella provincia olandese di Noord-Holland, perché queste arrecassero disturbo.
La provincia di Noord-Holland ha concesso la deroga di abbattere 12.000 oche selvatiche e di sterminare persino le oche lombardelle maggiori, le oche facciabianca e le oche canadesi che soggiornano ancora d’estate in questa provincia. Questa deroga è stata concessa all’Unità di gestione della fauna, un raggruppamento di agricoltori e cacciatori, del quale fanno parte anche i gestori di terreno come la Landschap Noord-Holland (“Paesaggio di Noord-Holland”), la Staatsbosbeheer (“Gestione statale delle foreste”) e la Natuurmonumenten (“Monumenti naturali”). Queste organizzazioni sono responsabili anche loro di una politica che mira soltanto a venire incontro ai desideri degli agricoltori. Le ricerche scientifiche però non dimostrano affatto che le azioni di sterminio progettate riducano il numero di oche. Non c’è neppure un rapporto tra il numero di oche presenti lì e i danni reclamati nel settore agricolo. La legislazione attuale non ammette lo sterminio, anche se questo si esegue “solo d’estate” secondo la provincia.
Nella notte della domenica 1 giugno è inoltre entrata in vigore una deroga permettendo di catturare e di gassare 6.000 oche selvatiche nell’isola di Texel, situata nelle Wadden olandesi. Quest’operazione era da eseguire dall’azienda Duke Faunabeheer. Su richiesta della Faunabescherming, la Società olandese di protezione della fauna, il giudice ha telefonicamente annullato questa deroga immediatamente. Duke non ha voluto aspettare la sentenza del giudice, anzi, a mezzanotte in punto, ha già cominciato lo sterminio a Texel. Secondo Duke stessa, 500 oche sono state gassate prima che non potesse intervenire il giudice. Hanno operato come ladri nella notte, senza dubbio sapendo che sarebbe molto probabile che il giudice avrebbe divietato lo sterminio. Inoltre, di notte c’è il rischio di disturbare gravemente ogni genere di specie animale protetta. Lo sterminio di 6.000 oche avrebbe soltanto avuto come conseguenza che i posti vuoti sarebbero subito stati presi da oche venute da altrove. Le 500 oche gassate sono quindi morte inutilmente.
Il giudice ha deciso il 2 giugno che per il momento la provincia di Noord-Holland non avrà il diritto di uccidere oche.
Il destino delle oche non è sicuro per niente e perciò invochiamo il tuo aiuto per far cambiare idea al deputato provinciale responsabile dell’affare, il signor Peter Visser.

Come deputato del Partij van de Arbeid, Lei è responsabile della gestione della fauna nella provincia di Noord-Holland. Ha dato la permissione di fare uccidere 12.000 oche selvatiche e tutte le oche lombardelle maggiori e oche facciabianca, compresi i loro piccoli.
Ha deciso che le oche devono essere sterminate, come se fossero oggetti inanimati, mentre non si sa nemmeno quante oche ci sono esattamente e se effettivamente provocano danni – e caso mai fosse così, quali sono questi danni e dove sono arrecati.
È incomprensibile che Lei, con questa Sua deroga, violi la legge, ignorando anche rapporti scientifici. Di più, La terrò responsabile della sofferenza animale che provocherà la Sua misura sconsiderata, quando sarà eseguita.
La prego di riconsiderare la situazione, di ponderare tutti gli aspetti della gestione della fauna e di investire dell’energia in alternative che rispettano gli animali, per combattere o prevenire così il disturbo arrecato dalle oche.

In the past week, there has been much commotion about intended plans to gas thousands of geese in our province of North Holland because they allegedly are bothersome.
The province of North Holland granted an exemption throughout the entire province to allow the shooting of 12,000 grey geese, as well as the complete extermination of all the white-fronted geese, barnacle geese and Canadian geese that reside here in the summer. This exemption was granted to the Fauna Management Unit (Faunabeheereenheid), an alliance of farmers, hunters and land managers such as Landscape North Holland (Landschap Noord-Holland), State Forestry Management (Staatbosbeheer) en Nature Monuments (Natuurmonumenten). These organisations are partly responsible for the policy geared toward nothing more than fulfilling the wishes of the agriculturalists. Scientific research has done little to prove that the planned preventative actions will lead to lesser numbers. There is not even a relation proven between the numbers of geese and the claimed damage on agriculture. According to current law, extermination is not allowable. Not even if the province views it as “just in the summer.”
On Sunday night 1 June, an exemption was granted to capture and gas 6000 grey geese on the Dutch island Texel. The company Duke Fauna Management would take on the job. At the request of Fauna Protection (De Faunabescherming), a judge nullified the exemption as per direct via the telephone. Duke chose not to wait for the judge’s decision. Even worse, at the stroke of midnight it turns out the elimination had already begun. According to Duke, 500 geese were gassed before the judge could intervene. Like a thief in the night, while it was already quite well known that there was a good chance the judge was going to forbid it. Particularly at night, there are great risks for terribly disrupting all sorts of protected species. The elimination of 6000 geese would only mean that other geese from elsewhere would come quickly and fill the created space again. The 500 gassed geese died a pointless death.
The judge decided on 2 June to forbid the province of North Holland to kill off the geese for now.
The Party for the Animals is absolutely against the killing of geese. In May, the parliamentary Party for the Animals already asked Minister of Agriculture Verburg parliamentary questions regarding this issue.
The fate of the geese is far from definite and we are calling on you to help change the mind of Peter Visser, the provincial representative from the province of North Holland.

Dear Mr. Visser,
As representative of the Partij voor de Arbeid, you are responsible for the fauna policy of North Holland. You have given permission to kill off 12,000 grey geese, white-fronted geese and barnacle geese, including their young.
You have decided that the geese need to be cleared away as if they are lifeless objects. Meanwhile, it is not even known exactly how many geese there are or which damage the geese incur, if any.
I find it incomprehensible that you are not only breaking the law by doing this, but also that you apparently are ignoring scientific reports. In addition, I hold you responsible for any animal suffering that may be created when your rash measure takes effect.
I urge you to rethink your position, consider all aspects of the fauna policy and invest energy in animal-friendly alternatives to counteract and prevent any nuisance from the geese.
