Worldlog Semaine 48 – 2014

Des nouvelles terribles cette semaine. A deux établissements avicoles presque 200.000 poules au total ont été gazées à cause de la grippe aviaire qui s’est déclarée. Le système actuel à grande échelle est comme une bombe à retardement pour la déclaration imparable des maladies animales. En 2003 40 million de poules ont été gazées à cause de la grippe aviaire. C’est ce qu’on voit avec tous les êtres vivants qui sont tenus tout près l’un de l’autre dans un espace, des maladies se déclarent. C’est complètement idiot que seulement trois petites communes néerlandaises ( Barneveld, Veenendaal en Ede) abritent ensemble dix million de poules. Cela cause une menace continue d’une déclaration de virus contaminable. Et malgré le fait que les riverains se font beaucoup de soucis, on continue à construire des étables énormes comme usines de virus.

Une enquête récente a montré que les oiseaux migrateurs, qui sont souvent indiqués comme les coupables quand on parle de la grippe aviaire, attrapent le virus aux Pays-Bas au lieu de l’apporter.

Tout compte faite il y a assez de matières pour un débat dans l’Assemblée nationale néerlandaise. Malheureusement on a renvoyé ma demande. J’ai bien posé des questions à l’Assemblée pour garantir le bien-être des animaux pendant la défense des transports, la sécurité des riverains et l’utilisation du CO2 très défavorable aux animaux pour tuer les poules. Gazer par CO2 signifie souvent une mort lente et douloureuse pour les poules.

Cette semaine j’ai déposé deux motions concernant le traité de commerce libre entre l’UE et les Etats Unis (PTCI). Les motions demandent à notre gouvernement d’insister dans l’UE à finir les négociations concernant ce traité. Et au lieu de négocier avec les Etats-Unis, leur parler d’une variante plus durable. Entre-temps plus de 230 organisations sociales et mouvements civils de 21 états membres ont commencé une initiative civile avec déjà plus de 913.000 signatures https://stop-ttip.org/ Le mois dernier la Commission européenne a fait savoir aux initiateurs qu’elle ne reconnaîtra pas l’initiative civile. C’est une honte. J’ai insisté le gouvernement néerlandais à y plaider à Bruxelles. Le traité de commerce libre a des conséquences très nuisibles pour l’environnement, le bien-être des animaux, les pays de développement et les entrepreneurs européens. Alors j’espère que nous pourrons faire obstacle à ce genre de pratiques!

Une bonne nouvelle! Le Néerlandais Boyan Slat de 20 ans de Delft a gagné le prix de l’environnement de l’ONU avec son invention pour ranger la soupe plastique. Par une campagne de financement participatif on a déjà remporté assez d’argent pour tester des prototypes de plus en plus grands de son installation. Boyan est le plus jeune gagnant jamais de ce prix. Félicitations!

Dans le débat concernant le budget du commerce étranger et la coopération au développement j’ai relevé la relation entre les problèmes de développement et le changement climatique. Par le changement climatique causé par l’Occident l’approvisionnement alimentaire mondiale est mis en danger et touche le plus fort les pays en développement. De plus le niveau de la mer montant causera bientôt des centaines de milliers de réfugiés climatiques. J’ai plus précisé que l’aide au développement des Pays-Bas doit surtout contenir une autre manière de produire et de consommer. Nous devons fortement déclencher un commerce juste, une transparence concernant l’origine des matières premières et la régionalisation!

Encore un court métrage intéressant du grand économiste Rifkin. Il plaide pour une fin de la grande consommation de viande et remarque que la crise financière n’est rien comparé aux problèmes à venir. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9wM-p8wTq4

Terrible news this week. Almost 200,000 chickens in total at two poultry holdings were gassed due to an outbreak of bird flu. The current large-scale system is like a ticking time-bomb for unstoppable outbreaks of animal diseases. In 2003, 40 million chickens were gassed due to the bird flu. Diseases are bound to arise when living beings are kept so close together in one area. It is absolutely ridiculous that three small Dutch municipalities ( Barneveld, Veenendaal and Ede) together accommodate ten million chickens. It is causing a continuous threat of a contagious virus outbreak. And despite the fact that people living in the neighbourhood are seriously worried, more mega stables or virus factories are being built.

Recent research showed that migratory birds, which often serve as scapegoats for bird flu, are actually exposed to the virus in the Netherlands instead of bringing it here.

All in all, food enough for a debate in the House of Representatives. My request for one was unfortunately rejected. In my parliamentary questions I asked for clarification on the guarantee of the welfare of animals during the transport ban, the safety of people living in the neighbourhood and the application of highly animal unfriendly CO2 to kill chickens. Gasification with CO2 often means a slow painful death for the chickens.

This week, I submitted two motions regarding the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and the United States (TTIP). The motions request our government to call on the EU to end the negotiations on this agreement and to discuss a more sustainable alternative with the US. Meanwhile, more than 230 community organisations and citizens’ movements from 21 Member States have started a citizens’ initiative and have already collected more than 913,000 signatures. https://stop-ttip.org/ Last month, the European Commission informed the initiators that it will not acknowledge the citizens’ initiative. Shame on the EU. I called on the Dutch government to argue in favour for the initiative in Brussels. The Free Trade Agreement has very harmful effects on the environment, animal welfare, developing countries and European entrepreneurs. Hopefully we can stop these types of practices!

Great news! The 20-year-old Dutch Boyan Slat from Delft has won the UN Environmental Prize with his invention to remove plastic soup. Enough money has meanwhile been raised by a crowd fund campaign to test increasing prototypes of his installation system. Boyan is the youngest winner of this prize ever. Congratulations!

During the debate on the Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation budget, I pointed out the relation between development issues and climate change. The global food supply is threatened by the climate change that is caused by the West, which will hit the developing countries hardest. On top of that, the rising sea level will cause hundreds of thousands of climate refugees within no time at all. I further clarified that development aid from the Netherlands should in particular mean that we will start to produce and consume differently. We have to focus on fair trade, transparency with respect to the origin of the raw materials and regionalisation!
