Worldlog Semana 50 – 2011

Esta semana el Senado en los Países Bajos ha puesto un elevado en contra del la realización de una prohibición del sacrificio ritual sin anestesia. El martes por la noche la mayoría de los senadores se ha proclamado en contra de nuestra propuesta de ley. El debate continuara el 17 de enero pero es muy improbable que los partidos cambiaran de opinión. El Partido para el Obrero (PvdA), D66 y el partido más grande en el gobierno, la VVD si votaron a favor de una prohibición en la Cámara Popular pero en el Senado se dejaron convencer por los partidos cristianos para permitir el sacrificio sin anestesia que es muy doloroso para los animales.

Después de un debate intensivo que duro prácticamente todo el día y donde la VVD se ha puesto desde temprano al lado del Partido reformado (SGP) y otros partidos confesionales, también PvdA y D66 se juntaron al monstruoso acuerdo. Es una muestra excepcional en cómo se puede huir colectivamente, buscando juntos una cobertura contra las consecuencias electorales y para poder seguir permitiendo el sufrimiento grave y evitable del sufrimiento de animales en las practicas rituales.

Esta semana ya se anunciaron las reacciones enojadas en cuanto al cambio de opinión que ha mostrado la VVD. El antiguo Senador Robert de Haze Winkelman de la VVD renuncio su membrecía del partido ya que opina que ‘la libertad de religión nunca puede ser un alibi para maltratar a los animales’

También el secretario Bleker de Agricultura exigió nuevamente en el debate un papel extraordinario anunciando en último momento un acuerdo que debería regular los excesos dentro del sacrificio ritual. El secretario del estado no había preparado nada pero anuncio inesperadamente una carta sobre el tema ofreciendo así a PvdA y D66 un escape para poder juntarse con VVD y los partidos confesionales.

La lucha por la terminación de la masacre ritual sin anestesia continuara sin cesar. El día después del debate anuncie en la televisión nacional que pretendo llegar con una nueva propuesta de ley que tomara en cuenta las objeciones del Senado. Esto para sí hacer posible una prohibición. Porque la larga agonía sin anestesia que sufren los animales a favor de los ritos religiosos en la Holanda de ahora debe detenerse ahora.

Mañana vamos a seguir con nuestra maravillosa acción ‘Groeiend Verzet’ (Oposición Creciente). Planteamos mañana los primeros 10.000 árboles de protesta. Esta acción que ya mencione en mi Worldlog de la semana pasada, ha comenzado como una protesta contra la política del Secretario del Estado Bleker quien piensa introducir una ley en contra de la naturaleza en 2012. La plantación de un bosque de protesta ha tocado una cuerda sensible con los amantes de los animales y de la naturaleza. Ya más de 23.000 personas compraron un árbol como Protesta Creciente contra los planes de demolición del gabinete.

La iniciativa pretende ofrecer a los ciudadanos la oportunidad para hacer posible las zonas de conexión ecológica que el gabinete piensa suprimir. Cada persona que ordena un árbol es invitado a plantear un árbol y de poner en palabras su preocupación en una etiqueta al árbol. Quien no está en la posibilidad para plantear un árbol pero todavía quiere participar en la creciente oposición, puede contar con voluntarios quienes plantean los arboles cuando el propietario no puede.

Sera un día fantástico y seguirán muchos más. Mañana entraran los primeros 10.000 árboles a la tierra, pero ya fueron ordenados 13.000 árboles extras que serán planteados en 2012 en otro terreno natural!

Hace tiempo anuncie que estaba en cinta. El momento se aproxima cada día más y por esto desde mediados de enero entro en licencia de maternidad. Así que volveré unas semanas más después de las vacaciones de Navidad para luego disfrutar de 16 semanas de (la venida de) mi nuevo bebe.

This week the Dutch senate threw up a barrier to the adoption of the bill seeking a ban on the ritual slaughter of animals without stunning. On Tuesday night a majority of the senators declared their opposition to the bill. The debate will continue on 17 January, but the parties are unlikely to change their position. While the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA), D66 and the largest party in the government, the VVD, voted for a ban in the Lower House, they allowed themselves to be swayed by a monstrous alliance of Christian parties to allow this extremely animal-unfriendly method of slaughter to continue.

Following an intense debate that practically lasted the entire day, during which the VVD decided early on to side with the Reformed Political Party (SGP) and the other religious parties, the PvdA and D66 also chose to join this monstrous alliance later that evening. An extraordinary exercise in collective evasion by seeking cover with each other against the electoral consequences of allowing the terrible and avoidable suffering animals endure when being ritually slaughtered to continue.

Angry reactions to the VVD turnabout on the issue already started coming in this week. Ex-senator Robert de Haze Winkelman (VVD) cancelled his party membership because he believes that “the freedom of religion can never be an alibi for mistreating animals.”

State Secretary for Agriculture Bleker again assumed a surprising role in this debate by announcing, literally at the last moment, a covenant to regulate the more undesirable aspects of ritual slaughter. Although the state secretary had not yet prepared anything, he unexpectedly announced a letter on this issue and thereby offered the PvdA and D66 a convenient way to throw in their lot with the VVD and the religious parties.

The fight to end ritual slaughter without stunning will continue unabated. On the day following the debate I announced on national television that I intend to prepare a new bill that takes into account the objections of the Upper House in order to get a ban passed in any event. A long agonizing death for animals without prior stunning to accommodate religious rituals has no place in today’s Netherlands.

Tomorrow I will be travelling to participate in our party’s excellent campaign “Growing Resistance”, when we will be planting the first 10,000 protest trees in a polder. This campaign, which I mentioned in last week’s Worldlog, has been launched as a protest against State Secretary Bleker’s disastrous new nature act which is due to be passed in 2012. The planting of a protest forest strikes a sensitive chord with animal and nature lovers. Already more than 23,000 people have purchased a tree as a sign of the Growing Resistance against the demolition policy of this government.

The aim of this initiative is to give citizens a way to create the ecological connection zones the government wants to scrap. Everyone that has ordered a tree is welcome to come along and plant a tree and express his or her concerns on a label that will be attached to it. Those unable to attend in person but who nevertheless wish to be involved in the Growing Resistance can count on volunteers who will be on hand to plant their tree for them.

It is going to be a fantastic day and there will be more to come: tomorrow the first 10,000 trees will be planted but an additional 13,000 have been ordered and they will be planted in another nature reserve sometime in 2012!

A little while ago I told you that I was expecting a baby and the moment is getting ever closer. From mid-January I will be on maternity leave. I will therefore be back shortly after the Christmas recess, but after that I will be taking 16 weeks to enjoy (the arrival of) my new child.
