Worldlog Semana 45 – 2008
He pasado una semana maravillosa. Me case!! Tuvimos un día increíble. Me permito presentarles mi esposo Jaap Korteweg. Es agricultor biológico y protector de animales.

Esta semana obviamente también se caracterizo por las elecciones en los Estados Unidos. Aunque a mí personalmente me gustaban mas los puntos de partida de Ralph Nader, el candidato independiente del Partido Verde que pudo lograr un medio millón de votos, si estoy muy contenta que gano Obama. No espero grandes cambios, pero me contenta mucho que el mundo no tendrá que seguir con Palin y McCain.
A petición de Nieuwe Revue, una revista Holandesa, escribi una Carta Dear Mr. President:
Dear Mr. President,
Es muy valiente tomar el mandato de un barco que se esta hundiendo!
Alain Greenspan lo dijo el mismo: “Como humanos no tenemos la inteligencia suficiente. Usted como vigilante no puede esperar infalibilidad de nosotros”. Y “he constatado un error en mis propios pensamientos y es que el mercado libre se podía regular mejor que el control por el gobierno”.
Su tripulación estará por ahora ocupada organizando las sillas extensibles. Usted tampoco quiere encontrar un camino muy diferente. Usted esta a favor de la pena de muerte y contra el matrimonio de los homosexuales y Usted defiende la posesión particular de armas.
Usted hereda las peores crisis: el de los créditos, la crisis monetaria, la crisis climatológica, la crisis de agua dulce, la crisis de la materia prima, la crisis alimenticia y la crisis de las enfermedades de animales que ha vivido el mundo.
En la búsqueda para el rumbo de su política seria bueno si Usted considerara todos los llamados contrastes de intereses existentes: entre humanos y animales, entre ricos y pobres.
Para un planeta como el nuestro no nos conviene tener tales contrastes de intereses. Todos nos encontramos en la misma situación. Es sacar agua con bomba o ahogar.
A largo plazo tenemos una sola meta en común: sobrevivir.
En ese sentido podemos aprender mucho de los animales. Nunca permitirán una de las crisis que arriba mencione. Lo que nos difiere de los animales (somos más inteligentes y podemos hacer consideraciones morales) aparentemente no lo tomamos como una ventaja sino como una desventaja.
Lo más precioso que tenemos – el agua limpia, el aire limpio y la biodiversidad lo hemos reducido a algo muy pobre.
Y todas las cosas que habíamos considerado como valiosas en las décadas pasadas, han estado perdiendo en forma rápida su brillo. Necesitamos un cambio. Es increíble pensar que casi la mitad de la cosecha mundial de trigo esta siendo tragada por la ganadería, mientras los niños se estén muriendo de hambre.
Si todos los Americanos dejasen de comer carne por 3 días esto significaría un ahorro de tanto CO2 que quitar un 50% de todos los vehículos de las carreteras de los Estados Unidos. Yes you can!
El mismo día de las elecciones se dio en California un triunfo enorme para todos los protectores de animales. Los electores podían expresarse sobre una ley contra la excrescencia de la bio industria. Después de haber contado el 95% de los votos resulta que un 63% de los electores vota a favor de medidas contra la bio industria. Esto significa mas lugar de vida para los animales! Es un triunfo increíble y he felicitado al Presidente del Humane Society, el señor Wayne Pacelle (quien tuve el gusto de conocer durante el premier de Meat The Truth). Un triunfo grande para Humane Society y un ejemplo para todas las organizaciones que se ocupan de la defensa de los animales!

This week was obviously completely overshadowed by the American elections. Although I personally am more drawn towards the points of view held by Ralph Nader, the independent Green party candidate who won a half a million votes, I'm very happy that Obama won. No, I don't expect he'll effect any revolutionary changes, but I'm rather pleased the world was not saddled with Palin and McCain.
Nieuwe Revu, a Dutch periodical, asked me to write a “Dear Mr President” letter:
Dear Mr President,
How brave of you to assume command of a sinking ship!
To quote Alan Greenspan: “We're not smart enough, as people. You should not expect infallibility from us as supervisors” and “I have seen the error in believing that the free market could regulate itself better than with government supervision.”
Your crew are currently busy rearranging the deckchairs on your ship, and you’ve decided not to chart an entirely new course. You are for the death penalty, against gay marriage and you defend private ownership of firearms.
You are inheriting the most serious credit crisis, currency crisis, climate crisis, fresh water crisis, raw material crisis, food crisis and animal disease crisis the world has ever seen.
When formulating your policies, please keep an eye to conflicts of interest, between humans and animals, rich and poor.
On a small planet such as ours, we cannot afford any conflicts of interest. We're all in the same boat. It's sink or swim.
When it comes down to the wire, we all have one common goal: survival.
We can learn a lot from animals about survival. They would never allow any of the abovementioned crises to develop. We are using the thing that separates us from the animals (our intelligence and ability to make moral decisions) not to our advantage, but to our disadvantage.
The most precious things we have, clean water, clean air and biodiversity, we have sold for nothing but a handful of small change.
Everything we have valued these past few decades has lost its glamour. We have to change tack, it is unconscionable that almost half the world's grain is consumed by cattle, while children starve.
If every American swore off meat for just three days, that would save as much CO2 emissions as removing 50% of traffic from American roads. Yes, you can!
Animal activists also won an incredible victory on the day of the presidential elections in California. Voters could let their voices be heard on a law countering the growth of factory farming and after counting 95% of the vote, 63% of voters appear to want measures against factory farming, giving animals more room to move! This is a wonderful victory for which I have recently congratulated Wayne Pacelle, President of the Human Society (who I recently met during takes for, and at the première of Meat the Truth). The Human Society has done very well and is an inspiration for all other animal protection organisations!
