En los Países Bajos finalmente se introducirán las reglas necesarias para proteger contra fuego a los establos que albergan animales! El Parlamento adoptó una moción el martes para que los animales en los establos ya no serán visto como ‘cosas’. Hasta ahora, los animales han sido considerados como ‘cosas’ o ‘atributos’ por lo que solo se aplicaban las normas de seguridad contra incendios de un cobertizo de mercancías. Pero felizmente para la mayoría del Parlamento esto ya no es aceptable.

Precisamente, los riesgos en los establos son grandes por motivo de algún corto circuito o un sobrecalentamiento de los equipos o cuando se trabaja en el establo. Debido a la falta de suficientes requisitos de seguridad contra incendios los bomberos muchas veces ya no pueden hacer nada para salvar a los animales. Los últimos cinco años más de un millón de animales han vivido una horrible muerte en los incendios en los establos. Esperamos que esta moción aprobada allí pueda causar algún cambio en el futuro.

En esta semana, hemos, Esther Ouwehand y yo, empezado con nuestra protesta contra la arbitrariedad en las reglas fiscales. Hemos argumentado que los servicios veterinarios se deben colocar bajo el bajo impuesto (IVA) del seis por ciento. También en la tarifa que pagan las personas cuando toman un animal de un refugio se deberá aplicar la tarifa reducida para el IVA.

En la actualidad es así en los Países Bajos: Cuando alguien compra un animal se paga un diecinueve por ciento de impuestos. Incluso cuando un animal está enfermo y el dueño tiene que hacerlo tratar por un veterinario tiene que pagar el diecinueve porciento de impuestos. Esther indico: "Curar a una mascota enferma no es ningún lujo, sino una necesidad y debe ser cobrado como tal: pagando solo un seis por ciento de impuestos”.

Teniendo como ejemplo a nosotros con la película Meat The Truth en Dinamarca la gente también está preparando una película sobre el consumo de la carne. Se llamara MADA/S, teniendo como chiste la palabra que MAD significa alimento en danés y MAD en Ingles puede ser traducido como loco. El tráiler con subtítulos en inglés se puede ver de vez en cuando aquí!

Dinamarca es un país, además de los Países Bajos, donde un gran número de cerdos en las granjas industriales son criados, cebados y sacrificados para la industria de la carne bajo terribles circunstancias. Es un país donde se espera que una película como MAD A / S pueda contribuir a una política mas amigable y respetuosa con respecto a los animales y el clima.

Para poder finalizar el resto de la película, los cineastas necesitan un millón de coronas danesas (aproximadamente € 135.000). En el sitio web puedes leer sobre la película y hacer una donación. The Netherlands will finally introduce rules to protect buildings housing animals against fire! On Tuesday the Lower House adopted a motion whereby animals kept in sheds and stables are no longer seen as objects. That has been the case up to now under the Buildings Decree which applied the same fire safety standards to sheds and stables as to warehouses. Fortunately, a majority of the House no longer considers this acceptable.

The risk of fire is particularly high in stables owing to short circuits and machines overheating during operations. The lack of suitable fire safety requirements means that often the fire department is unable to save the animals when called out to the scene. Consequently, more than a million animals have met their deaths in this horrible manner in the past five years. Hopefully this adopted motion will go some way to changing this situation in the future.

This week Esther Ouwehand and I launched a campaign against the arbitrariness of the tax rules. We want the services of veterinarians to be henceforth subject to the lower rate of valued added tax (VAT). We also want the fee people pay when taking an animal from a shelter to be subject to the lower rate.

The current tax situation in the Netherlands is such that when people buy an animal they pay 19% VAT. Furthermore, when someone’s pet is sick and the owner goes to see the veterinarian, 19% VAT is slapped on top of the vet’s bill. According to Esther, “Going to the vet to make your sick pet better is not a luxury but a necessity and it should be taxed as such, that is by six percent.”

Inspired by our film Meat the Truth, some filmmakers in Denmark are now producing a film on meat consumption entitled MAD A/S, which is a play on words since MAD means food in Danish. The trailer with English subtitles can be viewed here! A Like the Netherlands, Denmark is a country where huge numbers of pigs are raised in the bio industry under abominable conditions where they are fattened up for slaughter. Hopefully, a film like MAD A/S can steer Denmark towards more animal-friendly and climate-conscious policy.

In order to finish the film, the filmmakers need one million Danish crowns (which is around 135,000 euros). On the website, you can read about the film and make a donation. Although the website is only in Danish at the moment, an English version will soon be up. And speaking of Meat the Truth, the film has been viewed more than 100,000 times.
