Worldlog Semana 07 – 2012

El dia miercoles 8 de febrero hemos rescado la vaquita frison Sjoerdje! En la semana anterior a esa fecha ella había escapado de un matadero. Durante su fuga ella cayo en un agujero en el hielo. El matador permitió que se recuperara durante una semana para después sacrificarla.

Esta vaca audaz merece segun nosotros una vida bonita y larga. Por esto hemos buscado un nuevo alojamiento y lo logramos. Ella ahora puede gozar de su merecido descanso en Koeienrusthuis de Leemweg (una casa de reposo especialmente para vacas). El principio inicial de ese lugar es: ‘una vaca es mas que una fabrica de carne y de leche’ y esto cabe perfectamente en nuestra visión. Por esto estamos muy contentos que existe un lugar como Leemweg para vacas como Sjoerdje.
Hemos sabido de Susan quien vive en el Leemweg, que Sjoerdje esta muy bien. Se deja acariciar y le encantan las galleticas que le dan. Aun necesita acostumbrarse a su nuevo hogar pero ya se siente mucho mas relajada que en el dia miércoles.

Para segurar la pension de Sjoerdje hemos comenzado como partido un plan de vida para ella. El clima invernal en Holanda causa mucha menos proteccion para los animales que quieren escaparse a los cazadores. Por esto se ha logrado, con la ayuda de nuestros miembros Provinciales, una prohibición de tiro de animales protegidos.

Mas noticias acerca de las heladas severas en Holanda nos llegaron a traves de la organización para La Proteccion de Aves.Ellos indican que el continuo frio extremo hace que los pajaros vuelan en grandes grupos hacia el sur. El problema es que allí los esperan los cazadores franceses…con el resultado de miles de pajaros muertos. Si todo va bien la caza paro el dia 10 de febrero pero sigue siendo muy lamentable. Una prohibición total de la caza en Europa seria la mejor solución!

Nuestra fraccion en el Parlamento habia organizado el 7 de febrero una reunion especial para pedir atencion para el voluntario De Sea Sheperd Erwin Vermeulen. Erwin ya tiene 57 dias de permanencia – y sin poder abrigarse – en un congelador en Japon. Esto lo hace el gobierno Japones para acosar a los protectores de las ballenas. Y nuestro ministro de Relaciones Exteriores no hace nada, es increíble. Durante nuestra reunión teníamos a tres oradores. Geert Vos, el director de Sea Sheperd, estuvo presente para contarnos acerca del proceso judicial en el Japon. Asistio el primero de tres días parlamentarias programadas. Pavel Klinckhamers, líder de campana de Oceanos en Greenpeace, conto a los miembros del Parlamento acerca de dos colaboradores de Greenpeace que fueron detenidos en Japon en 2008 cuando intentaban destapar el comercio ilegal de carne de ballena. Por ultimo hablo el padre de Erwin, el señor Ad Vermeulen. Relato una historia personal acerca de su hijo. Esperemos que Erwin regrese pronto a Holanda.

Tenemos mucho respeto para el vegetariano Fauja Singh de 100 anos! El llego a un record maratón en Toronto como el maratonista mas viejo. Corrio el maratón en 8 horas y 25 minutos. Comenzo correr maratón a la edad de 89 y corre 16 kilometros cada dia.

Y finalmente una buena noticia de Grecia: los Griegos van a prohibir los circos con animales salvajes. Y en esto están mucho mas adelantados que en Holanda. Un buen paso,que merece ser seguido.

On Wednesday 9 February we bought Sjoerdje the Frisian cow her freedom! She had escaped from a slaughterhouse the week before and had fallen through the ice while on the hoof. The butcher gave her a week to come around, thereafter to be slaughtered.

This brave cow, as far as we're concerned, deserves a long, happy life and that's why we looked to re-home her. We did it: She can now enjoy her well-deserved peace in Koeienrusthuis de Leemweg. Their basic principle is 'A cow is more than a milk and meat factory' and it dovetails nicely with our point of view. We are extremely pleased that de Leemweg is there for cows like Sjoerdje.
We've heard from Susan, who lives at de Leemweg, that Sjoerdje is doing well. She's already letting people pet her and she loves the feed she's being given. She needs some time to adjust, but she's already much more relaxed than on Wednesday. Not a bad end for a cow that escaped the slaughterhouse!

The wintry weather in the Netherlands means less cover for animals to hide away from hunters. That is why, spurred on by our Members of the Provincial Council, many provinces have placed a ban on shooting protect animals.

We've had more news about animals and the biting frost in the Netherlands from the Netherlands Society for the Protection of Birds. They've indicated that because of the enduring frost, the birds are migrating in their masses to the south. Only when they arrive, French hunters are waiting for them, which results in thousands of dead birds. All things going to plan, the hunting season finishes on 10 February but it is still a sad situation. The best solution is a Europe-wide hunting ban!

Our parliamentary group of the Lower House organised a special cabinet meeting on 7 February to call attention to Sea Shepherd volunteer Erwin Vermeulen. Erwin has been sitting for 57 days now in a freezing Japanese cell without a jacket. The Japanese government are using him to bully whale protection activists. And our Minister of Foreign Affairs is doing nothing. It's truly unbelievable. During our meeting, we had three fantastic speakers in a row. Geert Vons, director of Sea Shepherd Nederland, was on hand to tell us about the legal process in Japan. He has attended only one of the no fewer than the five scheduled days set for hearings. Pavel Klinckhamers, the Ocean campaign leader for Greenpeace, told a story about two Greenpeace staff members that Japan arrested in 2008 when they tried to expose the illegal trade in whale meat. Erwin's father, Ad Vermeulen, told a personal story about his son. Hopefully Erwin will return to the Netherlands soon.

Kudos to 100-year old vegetarian Fauja Singh! He has broken the record for the oldest marathon runner by running a marathon in 8 hours and 25 minutes in Toronto. He started running when he was 89, and runs 16 kilometres every day.

And finally good news from Greece: The Greeks are going to ban circuses with wild animals. In that respect they're miles ahead of the Netherlands. It's a fantastic turn – and one good turn deserves another!
