El Partido por los Animales salió junto con miles de personas en todo el mundo a marchar por la justicia para los animales

Last weekend, thousands of people across the globe took to the streets to join the so-called Animal Rights March. Their purpose? To put an end to all forms of animal exploitation. The March took place in several countries such as Luxembourg, New Zealand, the Philippines, Canada, Australia, Greece, the United States, Norway and the Netherlands. The representatives of several parties for the animals joined the march in their own countries to send a strong political signal.

Party for the Animals MP Esther Ouwehand addressed the crowd during the Dutch Animal Rights March, outlining a future without animal exploitation as the logical and inevitable step towards social justice. However, the road to justice is not an easy one:

“Each generation has its own social justice movement, challenging us to show the world what we are worth as human beings. The social movement for animal rights is our movement.

And like with any justice movement, there is one group that leads the way. A group that has gained awareness, that is not afraid to feel that there is something fundamentally wrong with the way society treats a certain group – human or animal. Through history, the fate of pioneers has always been the same: being the exception in their environment, they face a lot of misunderstanding, resistance and even aggression.”

However, Ouwehand is also positive:

“It may be hard sometimes, but first and foremost, being a pioneer is incredibly cool. No matter what the world thinks, or how much resistance you are faced with – you listen to your heart and stand for what you know deep inside: that there is no excuse for the unnecessary use, suffering and killing of animals. Remaining true to your deepest values gives enormous strength. And guess what: there are more and more people like you. With the Animal Rights March, we are showing the world that the movement for animal rights is strong and unstoppable – and growing by the day.”

Growing political movement for animal rights
The Dutch Party for the Animals is part of a growing movement committed to the interests of animals through politics and in society. Worldwide, there are now 19 parties fighting to change the food system and make animal rights an essential part of the democratic process. They do this from a planet-wide vision considering the interests of people, animals, nature and the environment in conjunction with one another.

Large-scale suffering and destruction
Worldwide, over 70 billion animals are kept for the production of meat. That number becomes significantly higher when we count fish and the animals used for clothing or experiments. All those animals live in terrible conditions and, being seen as mere products, are unable to exhibit natural behaviour. There are even products that receive better protection than animal. Toilet paper in the Netherlands is better protected against fires than chickens, cows and pigs.

The way we treat animals also seriously jeopardises the future of our planet. A recent study carried out by the universities of Zurich and Oxford revealed that agriculture is a sector that contributes heavily to all major environmental problems. Woodland the size of several football fields is cleared every minute, air, soil and water are seriously polluted, and our water supply is endangered – all for the production of animal products. “A vegan diet is the single biggest way to reduce your environmental footprint – even more so than cutting down on your number of flights or driving an electric car,” say the scientists.

El fin de semana pasado, miles de personas en todo el mundo participaron en la llamada Marcha por los derechos de los animales (Animal Rights March en inglés). ¿Su objetivo? Poner fin a todas las formas de explotación de los animales. La marcha tuvo lugar en diferentes ciudades en países como Luxemburgo, Nueva Zelanda, Filipinas, Canadá, Australia, Grecia, los Estados Unidos, Noruega y los Países Bajos. Los representantes de diferentes partidos animalistas también participaron en la marcha, cada uno en su propio país, a fin de enviar un fuerte mensaje político.

Durante la Marcha por los derechos de los animales, la parlamentaria Esther Ouwehand se dirigió a la multitud. Delineó un futuro sin explotación de animales como un paso lógico e inevitable hacia la justicia social. El camino hacia la justicia, sin embargo, no es fácil:

“Como con cualquier movimiento enfocado en la justicia, siempre hay un grupo que toma la iniciativa, el cual está consciente del problema antes de los demás y que se atreve a transmitir un profundo sentimiento de que algo está fundamentalmente mal con la forma en que la sociedad trata a cierto grupo, sea un grupo de humanos o animales. El destino de los precursores siempre ha sido el mismo a lo largo de la historia. Son una excepción en su entorno. Se enfrentan a muchos malentendidos, resistencia e incluso a agresiones.”

Pero Ouwehand también se expreso positivamente:

“Aunque a veces es difícil, también es muy padre formar parte del grupo de los precursores. No importa lo que piense el resto del mundo y cuánta resistencia encuentres, tú escuchas a tu corazón y defiendes lo que sabes en el fondo: no se encuentra justificación alguna para la explotación de animales indefensos, para hacerlos sufrir y matarlos mientras no sea necesario. Mantenerte firme en cuanto a tus valores más profundos, te da mucha fuerza. Y ¿adivina qué? Cada vez hay más personas como tú. Con la Marcha para los derechos de los animales mostramos que el movimiento por los derechos de los animales es un movimiento fuerte e imparable y crece día a día.”

Crece el movimiento político por los derechos de los animales
El Partido holandés por los animales es parte de un movimiento creciente que se esfuerza por los derechos de los animales en la política y la sociedad. Actualmente existen 19 partidos en todo el mundo que luchan por un sistema alimentario diferente y por el anclaje de los derechos de los animales en el proceso democrático. Lo hacen desde una visión que abarca el planeta entero y que considera los intereses de las personas, los animales, la naturaleza y el medioambiente en conjunto.

El sufrimiento y la destrucción a gran escala
En todo el mundo, se utilizan más de 70 mil millones de animales la para la producción de carne. Ese número sería aún mayor si incluyéramos también los peces y los animales utilizados para la producción de ropa y los experimentos. Estos animales viven bajo circunstancias horribles, en que se consideran solamente como productos y en que no pueden vivir de manera natural. A veces, los verdaderos productos están incluso mejor protegidos que los animales. Por ejemplo, el papel higiénico en los Países Bajos está mejor protegido contra incendios que los pollos, vacas y cerdos.

La forma en que tratamos a los animales también pone el futuro de nuestro planeta en serio peligro. Como muestra una encuesta reciente de las universidades Zurich y Oxford: La agricultura es un sector que contribuye a todos los principales problemas ambientales. Para generar productos de origen animal, cada minuto se tala un área de bosque del tamaño de un campo de futbol, el aire, el suelo y el agua están gravemente contaminados y nuestro suministro de agua está en peligro. “Una dieta vegana es la forma más sólida de reducir tu huella ecológica, incluso más que dejar de volar o conducir de forma eléctrica”, afirman los investigadores.
