El Partido del Bienestar Animal obtiene primera repre­sentación política en el Reino Unido

Después de que Jane Smith, concejal del ayuntamiento de Alsager en Cheshire, decidió cambiar su Partido Verde por el partido inglés dedicado al bienestar animal —the Animal Welfare Party (AWP)— éste obtuvo por primera vez una representación política. Smith había representado al Partido Verde desde el 2015, pero decidió la semana pasada unirse al Partido del Bienestar de los Animales.

La nueva representante del AWP comentó en una declaración: “He tomado esta decisión porque creo que es importante que empezemos a reconocer y atender las injusticias inherentes a la toma de decisiones humanocentristas. Aunque el paso que tomé parece pequeño, pienso que es de gran importancia simbólica. Compartimos nuestro mundo y nuestros recursos naturales con tantas otras especias, que me parece correcto y justo que también haya una representación propia para todos los animales y su habitat y que los tomemos en cuenta en nuestras decisiones.”

El partido, fundado hace 10 años, participó durante la Gran Elección de este año en tres distritos en Londres y participó por primera vez en el Parlamento Escocés y en la Asamblea del Irlanda del Norte.

Vanesa Hudson, líder del partido AWP, dijo: “Estoy orgullosa del liderazgo que el Reino Unido ha mostrado a través de la historia en cuanto al bienestar de los animales. Es tiempo de que los animales se representen de manera dedicada dentro de nuestros organismos de toma de decisiones. Solamente así se protegerán sus necesidades e intereses adecuadamente. La decisión de Jane permite al AWP tomar sus primeros pasos hacia el éxito de nuestros partidos hermanos en los Países Bajos, Alemania, Portugal y Austria, donde ya han logrado la representación política.”

El AWP está basado en el modelo del Partido por los Animales de Holanda, que ocupa cinco escaños en la Cámara de Representantes de los Países Bajos, dos en el Senado y uno en el Parlamento Europeo.

The Animal Welfare Party (AWP) got its first political representative in the UK last week after a town councillor defected from the Green Party. Jane Smith, who is on Alsager Town Council, in Cheshire, made history last week after announcing her decision to switch political parties. Smith has served on the council since 2015.

The new AWP representative said in a statement: “I have made this decision because I believe it is important that we begin to acknowledge and address the inherent unfairness of our human-centric decision making bodies. Although the step I take today may appear small, I believe it is of huge symbolic significance. We share our world and our natural resources with so many other species, and it is only right and fair that those other animals and their habitats are properly represented and considered in our decision making.”

The party, established 10 years ago, contested three London constituencies in this year’s General Election. The party also contested the Scottish Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly elections for the first time in the same year.

Vanessa Hudson, AWP party leader, said: “The UK has a proud history of thought leadership in animal welfare. It is high time animals had dedicated representatives in our decision making bodies. Only that way can their needs and interests begin to be properly protected. With Jane’s step, AWP takes its first steps to joining our sister parties in the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal and Australia who have already achieved that for animals.”

The AWP is based on the Dutch ‘Party for the Animals’ Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD), which holds five seats in the Dutch House of Representatives, two in the Dutch Senate and one in the European Parliament.
