Worldlog Settimana 45 – 2012

Nel Worldlog di questa settimana ci sarà un report più esteso del nostro anniversario di dieci anni che abbiamo festeggiato domenica scorsa. Ancora vorrei enfatizzare quanto la giornata sia stata bella. Quando, insieme ad altre tre persone, ho cominciato il Partito per gli Animali, la politica tradizionale ha reagito in modo particolarmente scettico. Dopo poco tempo eravamo la lepre nella maratona. E lo siamo ancora!

Vi mostro una parte della mia presentazione:
Oggi è esattamente dieci anni fa che abbiamo fondato il Partito per gli Animali. Eravamo con poca gente ed era un quarto d’ora prima della scadenza per le elezioni. Non eravamo coscienti delle conseguenze di fondare un Partito. Ora, dieci anni dopo, sono molto contenta del risultato e del fatto che ci siamo conosciuti. Abbiamo trasformato la nostra preoccupazione per gli animali, la natura e l’ambiente non in una frustrazione, ma in un’energia congiunta.

Durante la festa è stato presentato per la prima volta anche il film “La lepre nella maratona”, su dieci anni del Partito per gli Animali. Grande! Il nostro dipartimento scientifico ha chiesto al regista Joost de Haas di produrre un film sul Partito. Il film contiene interviste con i fondatori del nostro Partito e reazioni dalla scienza, la politica e la stampa sulla nostra nuova direzione politica. Il film è principalmente in olandese. Se volete vederlo comunque troverete il trailer sul nostro sito web. Potrete tra poco ordinare il film sul nostro negozio online.

Erano presenti anche due ospiti che hanno fatto delle relazioni che ispiravano molto. Il famoso filosofo politico canadese Will Kymlicka ha fatto una relazione sul suo libro Zoopolis, uscito nel 2011. Il libro Zoopolis tratta la teoria politica dei diritti degli animali. Applica nel suo libro il concetto del popolo e la civiltà agli animali, cosa che porta a delle sorprese. Se non l’avete ancora letto, ve lo consiglio fortemente!

Anche il professore di giurisprudenza, e storico membro del Partito, Paul Cliteur era presente. Ha parlato del nostro disegno di legge per un divieto sulla macellazione rituale senza anestesia, portando l’argomento ad un livello sociale. Paul Cliteur dice: “Se l’uomo pensa si debba vivere la religione con sofferenza, che la sofferenza sia la loro.”

Nella camera il lavoro quotidiano ha continuato. Il nuovo governo Rutte (leader del Partito VVD) ha presentato il suo programma e per questo motivo vi era un dibattito per la formazione martedì scorso. Complimenti per la velocità con quale i “formatori” hanno costruito un governo. Puoi dire tante cose sui vegetariani, ma non che lavorino lento 🙂 . Non solo la velocità merita una valutazione. Oltre alle critiche che noi abbiamo sull’accordo del governo, siamo molto contenti del divieto sugli animali selvatici nei circhi e le punizioni più gravi per chi maltratta gli animali. E’ la terza volta dal 2006 che si parla di benessere degli animali in un programma del governo e dimostra coraggio tra i fondatori che resistono i commenti di chi non vuole sapere niente del benessere degli animali. Merita davvero un grande complimento!

La collega Esther Ouwehand ha chiesto alla camera questa settimana sulle scimmie che vengono ammazzate in modo crudele nell’allevamento degli animali per le sperimentazioni. La “British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection” (unione inglese per l’abolizione della vivisezione) ha pubblicato che le scimmie che “avanzano” in un allevamento di animali per le sperimentazioni di un’azienda chiamata Noveprim Ltd su Mauritius, vengono ammazzate in modo crudele, messe in barattoli e bruciati. E’ veramente orrendo e incredibile che un allevatore crei degli avanzi di animali per poi ucciderli in modo crudele. Vogliamo tra le altre cose che verrà indagato se il negoziante di scimmie olandese “R.C. Hartelust BV” compra delle scimmie da Mauritius.

In last week's Worldlog I gave a more comprehensive report of our 10 year anniversary party held on Sunday of last week. I would once again like to say just how nice and convivial day this was. When I founded the Party for the Animals along with three other people, the world of traditional politics reacted with its usual scepticism. But we soon proved to the front runner in the race. And we still are!

Here is a short excerpt from my speech:
Today it is exactly ten years ago that our small group of people founded the Party for the Animals just 15 minutes before the Electoral Council deadline. We had no idea the things we would have to deal with in setting up a political party. Now, ten years later, I'm pleased with what we've made of it. That we got to know each other. That we did not let our concerns about animals, nature and the environment degenerate into powerlessness and frustration, but turned them into militancy and communal action.

We also premiered our film ‘The Hare in the Marathon', about the Party for the Animals’ 10 years of existence. Wonderful! Filmmaker Joost de Haas made a film about our party under commission from our scientific agency. In film contains interviews with our party's founders and reactions from the scientific, political, and media communities to our new political movement. The film is primarily in Dutch. We also had two inspiring guest speakers. Well-known Canadian political philosopher Will Kymlicka held a talk about his book 'Zoopolis' which was published in 2011. His groundbreaking book 'Zoopolis' discusses political theory on animal rights. In his book he applies the concept of 'citizenship' to animals – with surprising results. If you haven't read it yet, we really recommend it!

Plus Paul Cliteur, Professor of Jurisprudence and someone who's been there from the very beginning, was also there. He held a lecture about our legislative proposal to ban unanaesthetised ritual slaughter and placed the debate in a broader social context. Paul Cliteur says: “If people think that experiencing religion must be paired with suffering, then let it be their own suffering.”

Work continues in the Lower House. The new Rutte cabinet has presented its plans and so last Tuesday we held a formation debate. My compliments on the pace in which both informants hammered the cabinet together. You can say a lot about vegetarians, but not that they work slowly 🙂 . However, speed definitely not the only criteria that warrants assessment. Aside from the criticism we have for the Accord, we're very happy with the ban on wild animals in circuses and the more stringent punishments for cruelty to animals. This is the third time since 2006 that animal welfare has been discussed in a coalition agreement, and it bears absolute witness to the courage of the founders against the scornful comments from people who have nothing to do with animal welfare. My sincerest compliments are in order here!

My colleague Esther Ouwehand asked parliamentary questions this week about apes being cruelly slaughtered in a laboratory animal breeding facility. The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection announced that ‘surplus’ apes in Noveprim Ltd's laboratory animal breeding facility on Mauritius were being killed in a cruel way, dumped in containers, then burned. It is truly gruesome and unbelievable that a laboratory animal breeder can allow an animal surplus to occur and then kill them in such a brutal way. We want to look into such things as whether Dutch ape trader R.C. Hartelust BV also buys apes from the ape breeder on Mauritius.
