Una buona notizia questa settimana. Secondo indagini dell’ufficio ricerche Deloitte gli Olandesi mangiano sempre meno carne. Tre anni fa nei nuclei familiari Neerlandesi si metteva a tavola la carne 5,1 giorni a settimana in media, adesso questo è solo 4,7 volte in media. E gli argomenti per mangiare meno carne sono esattamente gli stessi che noi, come Partito per gli Animali, abbiamo introdotto nel dibattito politico: I problemi della bio-industria ed il fatto che gran parte delle scorte mondiali di grano vengono letteralmente trangugiate dall’allevamento di bestiame mentre c’è una crisi alimentare e regna la fame fra la gente nei paesi in cui il grano è prodotto.

Se la diminuzione del consumo di carne fino ad alcuni anni fa era soprattutto una conseguenza di una crescente consapevolezza fra la gente della salute (una considerazione uomocentrale), adesso pare che il benessere degli animali, l’ambiente e la distribuzione di alimenti vengano seriamente presi in considerazione e questo è un guadagno. Sono sicura che questo sviluppo continuerà!

La nuova vice-presidente degli Stati Uniti, se vincerà Mc Cain, Sarah Palin, è una amante della caccia della peggior specie.

Propaganda lo sparare dall'alto (per divertimento) ai lupi e agli orsi di Alaska, l’unico stato degli Stati Uniti in cui questo è ancora permesso.

Inoltre pensa che global warming sia una invenzione per frustrare la caccia agli orsi polari; è a favore di perforazioni petrolifere in parchi naturali artici (suo marito per altro lavora per la multinazionale petrolifera BP) e appoggia un grande progetto minerario vicino a Bristol Bay provocherà danni all'habitat mettendo così a rischio l'esistenza di una numerosa popolazione di salmoni. Insomma, un’altra ragione importante per sperare che Obama vinca le elezioni. Ecco la signora Palin dopo una battuta di caccia ai caribù.

Infine nei Paesi Bassi è scoppiata una campagna diffamatoria mettere in cattiva luce organizzazioni e persone che intervengono in difesa degli animali, della natura e dell’ambiente. Dopo che un parlamentare Olandese, Wijnand Duyvendak, della Sinistra Verde, aveva confessato in un libro di aver partecipato a un furto nel Ministero dell’Economia per rivelare piani segreti per la costruzione di centrali nucleari, i mass media della destra si sono subito tuffati su questa vicenda in un modo che l’ha costretto a dimettersi.

In seguito ci ha rimesso il ministro Olandese Jacqueline Cramer a causa degli stessi media perché 22 anni fa segnò una petizione per la libertà di stampa, quando la publicazione dei documenti in questione avrebbe condotto a procedimenti penali.

E Greenpeace viene attaccato duramente, giorno dopo giorno, all’apertura della prima pagina del più grande giornale dei Paesi Bassi (Il Telegraaf) perché sarebbe un’organizzazione terroristica. Ragione? Gettano blocchi di granito in una riserva marittima davanti alla costa della Danimarca per prevenire che il territorio venga svuotato dai pescatori. Leggi qui tutta la storia.

La settimana scorsa io ho rivolto un appello alla cittadinanza per diventare membri adesso di organizzazioni Verdi come reazione alla scatenata.caccia alle streghe.

Good news this week. According to a Deloitte Research survey, the Dutch eat less and less meat. Average household meat consumption in the Netherlands has dropped from 5.1 days a week three years ago to 4.7 days a week at present. And the arguments for eating less meat are exactly the same arguments that we, as the Party for the Animals, introduced in the political debate in 2006: the problems of factory farming and the fact that a major proportion of the world grain supply is literally swallowed up by livestock farming while there is a food crisis and people suffer from hunger in the very countries where the grain is produced.

Whereas the reduction of meat consumption was triggered mainly by increasing health awareness until a few years ago (a human-centred consideration), it turns out that animal welfare, the environment and food distribution weigh heavily in people’s decisions and that is a good thing. I am certain that this development will continue!

The new Vice President of the US, if it is up to McCain, Sarah Palin, is a hunter of the worst kind.

She propagates shooting wolves and bears from planes (just for fun) in Alaska, the only US state where this is still permitted.

In addition, she believes that global warming is an invention to frustrate polar bear hunting; she is also a proponent of oil drilling in Arctic wildlife areas (incidentally, her husband works for oil multinational BP) and she supports a large mining project near Bristol Bay that will ruin a large salmon population. In short, this is yet another important reason to hope that Obama will win the election.

Finally, a huge smear campaign has been unleashed in the Netherlands for the purpose of damaging the reputation of organizations and persons that stand up for animals, nature and the environment. After a Dutch parliamentarian, Wijnand Duyvendak from GreenLeft, confessed in a book that he had participated in a burglary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs 23 years ago in order to disclose secret plans for the construction of nuclear plants, right-wing media immediately jumped on it with such vigour that he was forced to step down.

Next, the Dutch Minister Jacqueline Cramer was attacked in the same media, because she had signed a petition in support of freedom of the press 22 years ago, when the publication of the relevant documents was likely to result in prosecution.

And Greenpeace is being relentlessly attacked day in day out in the front-page headlines of the largest Dutch newspaper (De Telegraaf), because it is claimed to be a ‘terrorist organization’. The reason? They drop granite rocks in a sea reserve off the coast of Denmark to prevent the area from being fished empty. Read the full story here.
