Worldlog Settimana 25 – 2008
Questa settimana il parlamento ha approvato una mozione del Partito per gli Animali, nella quale il ministro viene incaricato di presentare finalità misurabili in materia di benessere degli animali. Il ministro è stato bacchettato già due volte dalla Corte Generale dei Conti, un organo di sorveglianza indipendente che ha riscontrato la mancanza di finalità calcolabili, alla base di una linea politica, in materia di benessere per gli animali e di durevolezza.
Si è fatto un gran parlare questa settimana dell'isola di Texel, dove le autorità hanno dato il permesso di trasportare e gassare oche selvatiche protette. Questo solo perché la più grande organizzazione per la protezione della natura in Olanda, la Natuurmonumenten (Monumenti Naturali) era del parere che le oche fossero in concorrenza con la pettima e gli altri uccelli prativi.
Ecco la grande differenza tra i difensori degli animali e i difensori della natura. I difensori della natura non fanno niente per il benessere degli animali finché il numero degli esemplari è abbastanza grande . Sono perfino disposti a dimezzare una specie quando questa, secondo loro, è troppo grande.
Collaboratori della Protezione Fauna erano sul posto e come testimoni oculari hanno dato un resoconto. Eccone uno per farvi un'idea:
Texel, isola assassina
Venerdì e sabato scorso sono stata testimone dello sterminio delle oche selvatiche, eseguito da Duke Faunabeheer ( Duca Gestione Fauna) e dalla famiglia di cacciatori Den Hartog. Queste azioni hanno avuto luogo su richiesta di Natuurmonumenten (NM), Staatsbosbeheer (SBB) ( della Guardia forestale) e della provincia Noord-Holland. Senza avanzare alcuna ragione valida, obbediscono supinamente alle ordini dell’Olanda LTO.
Vedo succedere tutto a distanza, non posso accedere al terreno che appartiene a NM a causa della qualifica “protetto”, mentre le macchine ed i trattori dei contadini vanno avanti ed indietro come gli pare e mi sento intensamente disperata e triste a guardare come ci si comporta con degli animali vivi, come se fossero rifiuti voluminosi.
La crudeltà con cui gli animali, completamente presi dal panico, vengono condotti, schiaffeggiati nel carro bestiame, alzati per le zampe, presi a calci e ammonticchiati l’uno sull’altro, è indescrivibile.
Piangendo ed impotente devo assistere allo spettacolo di oche, genitori e piccoli, che starnazzano forte e chiamano i loro parenti dal carro bestiame, trasportate al Vernichtungslager, un terreno losco e disordinato con dei grandi casotti, appartenenti a un membro del direttivo l’Interesse di Texel.
Là muoiono per una orribile morte, per asfissia, dolorosa e lenta. La gente della Guardia forestale, nota bene i guardiani della provincia Noord-Holland, e quella di Monumenti Naturali, durante questa azione se ne restano a chiacchierare tra loro socievolmente, a ridere e a fumare come se fosse un picnic piacevole…
Come è possibile che un paese che osa chiamarsi civile, con un governo che parla continuamente di norme e valori, ammetta una cosa del genere?
Monumenti Naturali ha venduto l’anima al Partito Democristiano con un contadino ed un cacciatore come preside, un direttore che tenta di giustificare con menzogne la sua politica insensata nei confronti dell’oca selvatica. Spero sinceramente che i membri sostenitori di MN diano le dimissioni da soci in massa.
Sento ancora lo starnazzare disperato e le imagini di questi animali innocenti, condannati a morte, sono scolpiti nella mia retina. Non potrò mai dimenticare questo. Ne sono distrutta.

L’Organizzazione giovanile del Partito per gli Animali PINK!, è scesa in piazza il 18 giugno di fronte all’ambasciata austriaca per la liberazione di Martin Balluch, il presidente del Verein gegen Tierfabriken(VGT) (Associazione austriaca contro le Fabbriche di animali). Martin Balluch ed alcuni altri membri di VGT sono stati arrestati dalla polizia austriaca ed incarcerati senza accusa. PINK vuole che i difensori dei diritti degli animali di VGT siano liberati immediatamente. Anch’io sono andata a dare il mio appoggio all’azione di Pink.

This week Parliament adopted a motion from the Party for the Animals requiring the Minister of Agriculture to provide measurable goals in regards to animal welfare within two months. The Court of Audit (Algemene Rekenkamer), an independent institution of the Dutch government, had previously reprimanded the minister on two different occasions because there were no measurable goals regarding the animal welfare and sustainability policy.
There was much commotion this week concerning the Dutch island Texel where the government granted permission to capture protected wild geese and gas them. Purely because the largest “nature protection organisation” of the Netherlands, Nature Monuments (Natuurmonumenten), believes that the geese create too much competition for the black-tailed godwit and other grass-land birds.
That is the big difference between animal protectors and nature protectors. Nature protectors do nothing about the welfare of animals as long as the population is large enough. They are even prepared to “thin out” a population that in their opinion is too large.
Employees of the Fauna Protection (Faunabescherming) were on site and gave eyewitness reports. To get an idea, we’ve included one here:
Texel, Murder Island
Last Friday and Saturday, I was witness to the extermination procedures of Duke Faunabeheer and the hunting family Den Hartog. Their extermination of grey geese took place at the request of Nature Monuments, State Forest Management (Staatsbosbeheer) and the province of North Holland. Without a single valid reason, they blindly follow the orders of LTO Nederland (federation for agricultural businesses, ed.).
I see it happening in the distance. I’m not allowed to enter the area which has a protected status because it is owned by Nature Monuments; and meanwhile autos and farmers’ tractors wander right on through. I feel so intensely hopeless and despondent to see how people treat living animals like garbage.
Simply barbaric how the panic stricken animals are chased around, thrown into a livestock truck, grabbed by their legs and kicked in and thrown on top of each other. Indescribably horrific.
Crying and powerless, I watch how the geese, parents and young ones, honking loudly, calling out to family members, get hauled away in the livestock truck to the Vernichtungslager (extermination camp), a dubious, disorderly area with large sheds which belongs to a board member of Texels Belang (a local political party, ed.).
There the geese die a horrible, painful and slow death by suffocation. Meanwhile, the people from State Forest Management (take note: the maintainer of the province North Holland) and Nature Monuments stand by chatting cheerfully with one another, laughing and smoking a cigarette as if it were a pleasant picnic….
How could a country that dares call itself civilised, with a government that is so outspoken about norms and values, allow such a thing?
Nature Monuments has sold its soul to the CDA (Christian democrat party) with a farmer and hunter as leader, a director who tries to justify his insane policies concerning the grey geese with lies. I hope that the paying members of Nature Monuments will cancel their memberships en masse.
I can still hear the desperate honking sounds, and the images of the innocent animals sentenced to death are engraved in my memory forever. I will never forget it. I am devastated.

On the 18th of June, the youth organisation of the Party for the Animals, PINK!, protested at the Austrian embassy in the Netherlands for the release of Martin Balluch, the president of the Association Against Animal Factories (Verein Gegen Tierfabriken – VGT) in Austria. Martin Balluch and several other members of VGT were arrested by the Austrian police and taken into custody without charge. PINK! wants the animal protectors of VGT released immediately. I also personally went to show my support for the protest of PINK!.
