Worldlog Settimana 14 – 2008

Karen Soeters, direttrice del nostro ufficio scientifico è ritornata dai Genesis awards a Beverly Hills con delle bellissime citazioni di molte celebrità favorevoli alla protezione degli animali per il nostro film Meat the Truth. Come: Andrea Bowen, Ben Stein, Bill Maher, Kate Flannery, Hayden Panettiere, Kisten Vangsness e molti altri ancora. Fra poco riprenderemo anche un’intervista con Pamela Anderson.

Le riprese con i bambini anglofoni e quelle per la registrazione teatrale si sono concluse il fine settimana scorso. Le prossime settimane faremo ancora delle riprese con un contadino biologico nel Galles (Gran Bretagna) e con il Dr. David Davies, il quale è esperto nel campo della riduzione, tramite un’alimentazione naturale, dei gas serra, emessi dalle mucche. Ho trovato per altro su YouTube un filmino carino sul rapporto tra il consumo di carne e i gas serra.

Oltre il film ci hanno tenuti impegnati anche i postumi dello scandalo dei mattatoi e dei trasporti di bestiame; questione che abbiamo sollevato noi nei Paesi Bassi. Un ammonitore-interventista, che aveva dichiarato di voler parlare solamente con il ministro perché altrimenti, diceva, temeva per la propria sicurezza, nel frattempo ha parlato a lungo con il ministro Verburg, dopo che il Partito per gli Animali aveva fatto da mediatore per ottenere un dialogo. Ritengo molto lodevole il fatto che il ministro si sia tenuta libera per ricevere l’ammonitore-interventista a così breve termine e non vedo l’ora che ella agisca ulteriormente in direzione del parlamento.

Per il resto la nostra settimana parlamentare è stata dominata dal dibattito su Fitna, il film anti-islamico del parlamentare Geert Wilders. Nel mio contributo al dibattito ho perorato la causa di una separazione netta tra chiesa e stato. Lo stato non si dovrebbe intromettere nelle vedute religiose di cittadini, la religione non si dovrebbe occupare dello stato.

Inoltre abbiamo posto delle domande al governo olandese sulla caccia canadese alle foche, che ha preso il via la settimana passata ed abbiamo chiesto attenzione attraverso mozioni per il controllo poco trasparente del settore carne nei Paesi Bassi, che curiosamente è nelle mani di … rappresentanti dello stesso settore!

Communicato divertente dall’Inghilterra: il Duca e la Duchessa di Hamilton dal loro castello trecentesco protestano contro la catena di negozi Selfridges a causa della vendita di foie gras. Il Duca e la Duchessa sono per altro vegetariani tutti e due. Notizia fantastica, aristocratici in azione per il benessere degli animali!

In senato il Partito per gli Animali ha dimostrato la settimana scorsa quanto è importante l’influenza di un partito piccolo come il nostro. Una proposta di legge del governo olandese per permettere in prova il gioco d’azzardo via internet, è naufragata con 37 voti contro 35. Il nostro voto è stato qui il ‘balancing vote’ (voto equilibratore).

A seguito dei Wordlogs continuiamo a ricevere richieste d’intervista dall’estero. Che bello notare che il messaggio comincia a diffondersi così rapidamente attraverso questo nuovo mezzo. Karen Soeters, Director of our Scientific Bureau, has returned from the Genesis Awards in Beverly Hills with great quotes from lots of animal-friendly celebrities for our film Meat the Truth, such as Andrea Bowen, Ben Stein, Bill Maher, Kate Flannery, Hayden Panettiere, Kisten Vangsness and many more. We will soon be recording an interview with Pamela Anderson.

Last week we completed filming the interviews with the English-speaking children and the theatre performance. In the next few weeks we will be filming interviews with a biological farmer in Wales, Great Britain and with Dr David Davies who is an expert on reducing green-house gases produced by cows by giving them natural feed. By the way, I found a nice little film on YouTube on the link between meat consumption and green-house gases.

In addition to the film, the past week has kept us busy with the follow-up to the slaughterhouse and cattle transport scandal that we brought to the Dutch public’s attention. A whistleblower, who insisted on speaking only with the minister as he feared for his safety, has since met with and had a long discussion with Minister Verburg. The Party for the Animals arranged the meeting. I find it extremely commendable that the minister took the time to receive the whistleblower at such short notice and I look forward to seeing how she pursues the matter in parliament!

Otherwise, our parliamentary work was dominated this week by the debate on the anti-Muslim film Fitna by the Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders. In my contribution to the debate, I argued for a clearer separation of church and state. The state should not concern itself with the religious views of citizens and religion should not concern itself with the affairs of state.

We have put questions to the Dutch government on the Canadian seal hunt that began last week and passed motions to demand attention for the obscure supervision of the Dutch meat sector that oddly enough is in the hands of …. the same people who represent that very same meat sector!

Good news from Great Britain: the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton are campaigning from their 14th-century castle against the sale of foie gras at the Selfridges store chain. The Duke and Duchess of Hamilton are both vegetarians. Great news, aristocrats campaigning for the welfare of animals!

Last week the Party for the Animals demonstrated in the senate how big the influence of a small party like ours can be. A bill from the Dutch cabinet to allow Internet gambling on a trial basis was torpedoed with 37 against 35 votes. Our vote in the senate was the ‘balancing vote!’
