We have had another wonderful party congress! At this congress, the list of candidates for the municipal elections in the Dutch municipality of Groningen was established. Niko Koffeman, senator and founder of the Party for the Animals, discussed the work of the party’s scientific bureau, NGPF. Politics should be more about the power of the idea and less about the idea of power, Niko said.
Political scientist and author of De Voedselparadox (the food paradox) Herman Lelieveldt was a guest speaker at the congress. He talked about how politicians pass on all responsibility for food that is friendly to the environment, people and animals, to consumers, even though consumers cannot possibly compete with the powerful and massive companies. Instead of using national regulations to support major polluters, we should deploy these regulations to protect our planet and all its inhabitants.
Party for the Animals Congress
I concluded the congress with a speech in which I announced that at the start of 2019, we will launch a new documentary on the consumption of animal products as the leading cause of many major problems. But it will also offer solutions to these problems. In 2007, our documentary Meat the Truth already caused quite a stir in the political sphere and the agricultural sector. The facts presented in the documentary about the devastating effects of the agricultural system on our planet were met with disbelief.
Today, these facts are common knowledge and even an important advisory council for the government is calling for a radical change in farming policy. With our new documentary, we want to show the world that the problems caused by the meat and dairy industry have only increased since 2007. The livestock lobby is one of the most powerful lobby groups in the world and it is only trying to increase its influence on the existing system. You can count on us to not shy away from uncomfortable truths in our new documentary. The conclusions will be at least as shocking as those in our last documentary.
Meat the Truth documentary
There is a great need for change, and this change needs to come from the bottom up, from advocates such as the Party for the Animals. And it has already begun. Since 2006, the number of vegans in England have increased by 350%. Vegan food has become fashionable. We are part of a major social movement, a movement that is on the winning side. A movement with radical criticism of our current system, but which also provides real sustainable solutions. We raise awareness of a new, higher interest that is planet-wide and transcends the divisions of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age and social class.
Between 20 and 24 June, delegations of our sister parties from all over the world – from Australia to Canada – will travel to Brussels and The Hague. Some organisations from e.g. Morocco and Turkey will also be present. Together, we will discuss how to address the issues in the livestock industry, live transports and all those other atrocities. On 22 June, I will give a lecture as part of this meeting at Leiden University in The Hague. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public, but the number of tickets still available is limited. You can book your tickets here. A great success for our European group: a majority of the European Parliament has supported the Party for the Animals’ proposal to stop subsidising bullfighting via the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). It is estimated that currently, millions of euros end up with breeders of fighting bulls each year.
Lastly, a success in the Dutch parliament: thanks to a widely supported motion of the Party for the Animals, the government must show how it endeavours to eliminate palm oil as a fuel. The Netherlands is Europe’s largest importer of palm oil and this has to stop. After all, the production of palm oil involves widespread destruction of habitats, rainforests and bogs. An area of rainforest the size of a million football pitches is cleared each year to produce palm oil, causing the orangutan and Sumatran tiger to be at significant risk of extinction. We will do everything in our power to halt the import of palm oil as soon as possible.

Abbiamo di nuovo concluso un bel congresso del partito! Durante il congresso e’ stato stabilito l’elenco dei candidati per le elezioni comunali nel comune olandese di Groningen. Niko Koffeman, senatore e fondatore del partito, ha parlato del lavoro dell’NGPF, il dipartimento scientifico del Partito per gli Animali. Niko ha dimostrato che la politica deve trattare il potere dell’idea, invece dell’idea del potere.
Herman Lelieveldt, politicologo e autore del libro Il paradosso alimentare, era relatore ospite al congresso. Raccontava come la politica sposta tutta la responsabilita’ del cibo e i suoi effetti sull’ambiente, l’uomo e gli animali, verso i consumatori, mentre il consumatore non riesce a combattere contro le aziende gigantesche. Dobbiamo utilizzare la legislazione non per sostenere gli inquintori piu’ importanti, ma per tutelare il nostro pianeta con tutti i suoi abitanti.
Congresso del Partito per gli Animali
Ho concluso il congresso con una relazione. Ho annunciato che all’inizio del 2019 faremo uscire un nuovo documentario sul consumo di prodotti animaleschi come la causa di tanti grandi problemi. Ma anche la soluzione per questi problemi. Nel 2007 il nostro documentario Meat the Truth ha gia’ causato molta controversione nella politica e nel settore agricola. I fatti da noi presentati nel documentario sui disastrosi effetti del nostro sistema agricola sul pianeta, venivano ricevuti con molta incredulita’.
Oramai questi fatti sono generalmente conosciuti e addirittura un importante consiglio raccomanda al governo di gestire l’industria del bestiame. Nel nuovo documentario vogliamo mostrare che i problemi causati dall’industria della carne e i lattici non sono diminuiti dal 2007, ma invece aumentati. La lobby dell’industria del bestiame e’ tra i piu’ potenti nel mondo e cerca ancora di piu’ di continuare col presente sistema. Potete contare sul fatto ce non temeremo nel nuovo documentario le inconvenienze. Le conclusioni del film saranno almeno rivelanti quanto lo erano gia’ nello scorso documentario, se non di piu’.
Documentario Meat the Truth
I cambiamento sono urgenti. Deve venire da sotto e da stimolatori come il Partito per gli Animali. E questo cambio e’ in arrivo. Dal 2006 il numero di vegani in Inghilterra e’ aumentato del 350%. Sta diventato di moda mangiare vegetale. Facciamo parte di un movimento sociale che sta vincendo. Un movimento con della critica radicale sul sistema, ma anche un movimento che offre delle vere sostenibili soluzioni. Puntiamo sull’interesse nuovo che copre tutto il pianeta e che soprassiede i limiti del sesso, l’etnicita’, la religione, la preferenza sessuale, l’eta’ e la classe.
Dal 20 al 24 giugno riceviamo a Bruxelles e l’Haya le delegazioni dagli altri partiti per gli animali da tutto il mondo: dall’Australia al Canada. Inoltre saranno presenti alcune organizzazioni da paesi come il Marocco e la Turchia. Guarderemo insieme come possiamo gestire la battaglia contro l’industria del bestiame, i trasporti del bestiame e tutte le altre crudelta’. Come parte di questo incontro faro’ una relazione il 22 giugno all’Universita’ di Leiden al Campus dell’Haya. La relazione e’ gratuitamente aperta a tutti, ma restano ancora solo pochi biglietti. Un bel successo della nostra frazione Europea. Una maggioranza del Parlamento Europeo ha sostenuto una proposta del Partito per gli Animali di cambiare le regole agricole della UE in modo che non arrivino piu’ incentivi verso la corrida. Si stima alcuni milioni di euro di incentivi UE arrivano ogni anno dagli allevamenti di tori di battaglia.
Infine un successo nel parlamento olandese: grazie a una mozione ben accettata e proposta dal Partito per gli Animali, il governo deve mostrare come combatte l’olio di palma come carburante. I Paesi Bassi sono l’importatore principale in Europa dell’olio di palma e questo deve finire; la produzione dell’olio di palma porta con se enorme distruzione di zone naturali importanti come le foreste tropicali. Un milione di campi da calcio di foreste tropicali viene distrutto ogni anno per l’olio di palma. Per questo motivo sono in via d’estinzione l’urang utang e la tigre Sumatrana. Faremo tutto per finire il prima possibile l’importazione dell’olio di palma.
