Worldlog Semana 40 – 2011

El martes pasado fue el Día Mundial de los Animales. Espero que la gente de todo el mundo han tomado un tiempo para reflexionar sobre los intereses de los animales en lugar de pensar en la preparación. Nosotros hemos estado muy ocupados.

Mi colega en el Parlamento, Esther Ouwehand, el día martes dio una torta a una tienda de mascotas en La Haya, porque han dejado de vender conejos y roedores. Esta tienda especializada en la venta de mascotas ya es la cuarta en los Países Bajos que ha dejado de vender cobayas, hamsters y conejos! Como queríamos poner a esta tienda en el centro de atención Ester la visito con un pastel en la mano y un Premio de parte del Partido para los Animales. Las personas que quieren comprar un roedor, en esta tienda se las dirige hacia un centro cercano para el cuidado de roedores. Tales centros están saturados y el comercio de mascotas no se preocupa por nada por el bienestar de los animales. Esperamos que otras tiendas de mascotas en los Países Bajos sigan también el buen ejemplo.

Yo misma fui el martes a la pequeña ciudad de Soest para dar un nuevo hogar a algunas gallinas salvadas de una vida en jaulas en batería. Se trata de gallinas que se encuentran en jaulas de alambre con menos lugar que una hoja de papel A4. Si la producción de huevos disminuye después de un año, la gallina va al matadero para terminar como gallina en la sopa.

La organización ‘Salva una gallina ponedora’ compra las gallinas de las granjas industriales para luego trasladarlas a unos "padres adoptivos". ‘Salva las gallinas ponedoras’ es una gran iniciativa! A más de un centenar de gallinas no les espera una vida como gallina de sopa. Ahora tendrán la vida que merecen. Creo que es muy importante que la gente pueda ver que horrible es la vida de las gallinas que pasan toda su vida como gallina ponedora en una maquina de la agricultura industrial.

El lunes pasado tuvimos una fiesta. Ahora estamos cinco años en el Parlamento Holandés y sigue siendo una cosa única en el mundo. En ningún otro lugar en el mundo un Partido por los Animales se encuentra representado en un parlamento nacional. En los primeros cinco años hemos repetido muchas veces las palabras de Gandhi que son validas para cualquier movimiento de liberación: Primero te ignoran, luego se ríen de ti, después te atacan, y finalmente ganas.

Esta semana el Secretario del Estado Bleker (agricultura) presento una asignación para estudiar las posibilidades de atacar a la caza horrible de delfines en las Islas Faeroés. Para motivar al Secretario de Estado para dar sus máximos esfuerzos para que los delfines, Esther le entregó al señor Bleker el DVD del documental ganador del Oscar, The Cove, que se dirige a la lucha contra la masacre de delfines central.

Opinamos que Europa debe estar en rebelión contra el ritual de matanza en gran masa que tiene lugar cada verano en las islas de las Islas Feroe. Cuando las ballenas, delfines – especies protegidas durante los meses de verano – se desplazan de un lugar a otro para encontrar comida, los Delfines corren el gran peligro cerca de las Islas de Faeroe. Los habitantes de este archipiélago, que pertenece al reino de Dinamarca, cada verano aprovechan todas las migraciones de verano de estos delfines para ejecutar "un rito religioso de paso". Este ritual se dirige a que los delfines con mucha violencia se les conducen a la bahía para luego enfrentarlos con cuchillos afilados hasta que mueran. No se hace nada con los restos de los delfines. Los expertos han determinado que la carne no es comestible debido a la cantidad de sustancias nocivas que contiene. Es por el puro hecho atroz que la gente hace estas cosas. Increíble. Esperemos que esta tradición bárbara desaparezca rápidamente.

It was World Animal Day last Tuesday and I hope that people all over the world took a moment to consider animals as beings with needs instead of thinking of how best to prepare them for the pot. The Party for the Animals certainly marked the day.

My fellow Party for the Animals parliamentarian Esther Ouwehand presented a biological cake to a pet store in The Hague in appreciation of their decision to stop selling rabbits and rodents. They are the fourth pet store in the Netherlands to end the sale of guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits! We wanted to put these pet stores in the limelight, so Esther went along with a cake and a certificate of appreciation from the Party for the Animals. People who come into this pet store looking to buy a rabbit or pet rodent are directed to the neighbourhood animal shelter. Animal shelters are overflowing and the pet trade is not particularly animal friendly. We hope that other pet stores in the Netherlands will follow this good example.

On Tuesday I travelled to the small town of Soest to give a number of saved battery hens a new home. Battery chickens live in wire gauze cages where each chicken has less room than an A4 sheet of paper. And after egg production starts to drop off at around one year, it’s off to the abattoir where they are turned into boiling-hens, known as ‘soup chickens’ in Dutch.

However, the organization ‘Red een legkip’ (Save a laying hen) is buying chickens from the bio industry for placement with ‘adoptive parents’. ‘Save a laying hen’ is a fantastic initiative! More than one hundred hens were spared an end as soup chickens and are now living the life they deserve. I think it is important that people see the terrible conditions of the chickens that are forced to spend their lives as egg-laying machines in the bio-industry.

On Monday it was time to celebrate: we have held seats in the Dutch parliament for five years now – and are still unique in the world. Nowhere else is a Party for the Animals represented in a national parliament. During these first five years we have often repeated the words of Gandhi, words hold true for any liberation movement: first they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.

This week State Secretary for Agriculture Bleker made a concession by saying he would see what could be done about the horrendous dolphin hunt in the Faeroe Islands. To inspire the state secretary to do his utmost for the dolphins, Esther presented him with a DVD of the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove which highlights the fight against the slaughter of dolphins.

We believe that Europe must rise up against this massive ritual slaughter that occurs in the Faeroe Islands each summer. As the pilot whale – a protected species of dolphin – travels from one place to another in the summer looking for food, it faces grave danger if the vicinity of the Faeroe Islands. The inhabitants of this group of islands, which are part of the Kingdom of Denmark, use the summer migration of these dolphins to carry out ‘a religious rite of passage’, a ritual that involves the violent driving of the dolphins into a bay where they are slaughtered by men wielding sharp knives. Nothing is done with the carcasses. Experts have declared that the meat is inedible owing to the quantities of toxins it contains. It seems that the Faeroe Islanders commit this act just for the sheer cruelty. Totally unbelievable. We hope this barbaric tradition will quickly be assigned to history.
