El Parlamento Europeo vota sobre la expoliación legal del Báltico
‘Plan de la UE legaliza la sobrepesca‘
La Eurodiputada Anja Hazekamp llama a sus colegas en el Parlamento Europeo a votar en contra del plan plurianual de pesca de la UE para el Mar Báltico. El plan original era para detener la sobrepesca de bacalao, el arenque y el espadín en el Mar Báltico. Pero segun el Partido para los Animales el plan para el Báltico ha sido tan debilitado que ya no queda nada del plan original. “Este plan no protegara a los peces. Este plan legaliza la sobrepesca“, advierte Hazekamp.
El Partido para los Animales critica entre otras cosas el estiramiento del denominado límite de Rendimiento Máximo Sostenible (RMS): el punto donde se pescan las aguas en su forma maxima. De acuerdo con los acuerdos existentes en Europa a partir de 2020 las aguas no deberán ser explotadas más allá del límite de RMS. Este Plan mar Báltico sin embargo introduce excepciones en las que los pescadores si tienen derecho a pescar más.
“Permitir la sobrepesca en el Mar Báltico también dará lugar a la sobrepesca en las demas aguas. Los pescadores que ahora están recibiendo excepciones para la sobrepesca legal en el Mar Báltico, luego querran esas excepciones tambien para el Mar del Norte y el Mar Mediterráneo. El Plan del Mar Báltico cree un precedente y asi abrira la puerta a un saqueo permanente de todos las aguas Europeas. Si este es el máximo que Europa quiere hacer, entonces la sobrepesca sólo se detendrá cuando todas las aguas estan realmente vacías,” dijo Anja Hazekamp.
“EU plan legalises overfishing”
MEP Anja Hazekamp calls on her colleagues in the European Parliament to vote against the EU multiannual plan for managing the Baltic Sea. The plan was initially intended to put an end to the overfishing of Baltic Sea cod, sprat and herring stocks. However, according to the Party for the Animals, the Baltic Sea Plan has been mitigated to such an extent that ending overfishing is no longer an option. “This plan does not protect fish; it legalises overfishing,” warns Hazekamp.
Among other things, the Party for the Animals criticises the stretching of the boundaries of the so-called Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY): the largest yield that can be taken from a species’ stock. From 2020, fishing beyond the MSY limit will not be allowed under the existing European agreements. However, the Baltic Sea Plan introduces exemptions that allow fishermen to cross the MSY limit.
“Allowing overfishing in the Baltic Sea will ultimately lead to overfishing in other waters. Fishermen who are now granted derogations for legally overfishing in the Baltic Sea, will soon demand the same exemptions for the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. This Baltic Sea Plan creates a precedent which opens the door to the possibility of a continued structural pillaging of all European waters. If this is all Europe is willing to do, overfishing will not stop until all waters are truly and entirely empty,” according to Anja Hazekamp.
