Mortalidad animal en San Eustaquio a causa de la sequía
Muchos animales son víctima de la pertinaz sequía en San Eustaquio, con numerosos casos de mortalidad y desatención grave del ganado en la isla del Caribe. Dado que las autoridades locales no toman medidas, Marianne Thieme ha pedido al Gobierno holandés que se pidan explicaciones a las autoridades locales de la isla para tratar de resolver la situación.
Más de 500 habitantes de San Eustaquio han solicitado al gobierno local, mediante una petición escrita, que se tomen medidas para proteger durante el periodo de sequía a los animales que trabajan en el campo, que son muchos en la isla. Estos animales afrontan situaciones muy difíciles a causa de la sequía, sufren una grave pérdida de peso y no reciben los cuidados mínimos por parte de sus dueños. Los animales que viven recluidos en cercados padecen situaciones de abandono y mueren de hambre y sed. El gobierno local no ha tomado medidas hasta el momento para proteger a estos animales contra la sed y el hambre.
El bienestar animal es competencia de las autoridades locales y, por lo tanto, la responsabilidad reside, en primer lugar, en el gobierno de San Eustaquio. Pero si las autoridades isleñas no toman medidas, el gobierno holandés debería poder intervenir.
Thieme: “El descuido de los animales es inaceptable. Dentro del reino de los Países Bajos no debería haber diferencias en los niveles de protección animal”.
Many animals are victims of the continuous drought on Sint-Eustatius. The cattle on the island of the Caribbean Netherlands are dying and are severely neglected. Because the local government is failing to take action, Marianne Thieme has submitted Parliamentary Questions to call on the cabinet to appeal to the local government and stop this neglect.
Over 500 inhabitants of Sint-Eustatius have asked the local government by means of a petition to take action against neglecting farm animals during the drought. The island has many straying farm animals. These animals have severe problems because of the drought. They are very thin and are not looked after by their owners. Also animals that are kept within fences are often neglected and die as a result of dehydration and starvation. The local government has not yet intervened to protect the animals against neglect and dehydration.
Animal welfare is an island competence and must initially be enforced by the government of Sint-Eustatius. But if the island government refuses to enforce animal welfare, the Dutch government will have to interfere.
Thieme: “Neglecting animals is unacceptable. Within the Kingdom of the Netherlands there should not be any difference in the degree of animal protection.“
