EP supports Party for the Animals in battle against agricultural toxins

The European Parliament wants to end the use of endocrine disrupting agricultural toxins flumioxazin and chlortoluron in the European Union. Last week, a majority of the European Parliament voted in favour of two motions by the Party for the Animals objecting to a prolonged approval of the toxins. The European Parliament’s motions will force the European Commission to reconsider its initial decision to extend the approval of flumioxazin and chlortoluron by a year.

Party for the Animals MEP Anja Hazekamp.

These toxins are classified in EU legislation as endocrine disruptive and harmful to reproduction. In addition, they are dangerous to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Therefore, the EU approval is in breach of the law, argues the Party for the Animals (PftA).

“European legislation on pesticides stipulates that agricultural toxins should not be approved when they are endocrine disruptive or toxic to reproduction. However, scientific research confirms that flumioxazin and chlortoluron are just that. The European Commission is acting against the law and against science by keeping these toxins on the market,” says PftA MEP Hazekamp.

“Despite a few big words in response to the citizens’ initiative on glyphosate, the European Commission is still neglecting to protect public health and the environment against toxins that should have been banned long ago. The EU is a puppet of the toxin industry and it has to stop.”

Earlier, Hazekamp had already convinced the European Parliament Environment Committee to object to above-mentioned agricultural toxins.
