Cu câteva săptămâni în urmă am vorbit din nou despre vânătoarea controversată a păsărilor migratoare din Malta. În fiecare primăvară, și deci și în această primăvară, vânătorii din Malta primesc permisiunea de a împușca păsările migratoare ce zboară din Africa în Europa. Colega mea Anja Hazekamp, reprezentanta partidului nostru din Europa, a solicitat iar ca vânătoarea păsărilor să nu fie permisă primăvara aceasta, însă în zadar. În schimb, vânătorii înșiși și-au tăiat craca de sub picioare când au ucis un vânturel. Vânturelul a căzut direct într-o curte a unei școli plină de copii care se jucau iar drept urmare a acestui incident sângeros, vânătoarea păsărilor migratoare din Malta trebuie să se oprească imediat! Vânătorii nu se pot duce nicăieri altundeva în Europa în această primăvară. În ceea ce mă privește, să rămână așa!

Deși Uniunea Europeană a interzis deja din 2009 comerțul cu blana de focă, în cadrul UE are loc în continuare comerțul ilegal cu blana de focă. Printre altele, în Canada au fost ucise în fiecare an până anul trecut sute de mii de foci mici de doar două săptămâni, pentru blana lor. I-am solicitat ministrului Ploumen, ministrul Afacerilor Interne și Cooperarea pentru Dezvoltare, dacă dorește să abordeze guvernul canadian în numele Țărilor de Jos privind această oribilă vânătoare a focilor, iar din fericire acesta a acceptat.

În propria noastră țară există încă din păcate hoți de lebede. Deși încă din 2008 este interzis în Țările de Jos să prinzi lebedele și să le omori pentru producția de carne și puf, în prezent există încă doi hoți de lebede ce sunt activi în Țările de Jos. Aceștia prind și vând lebedele drept păsări decorative. Pentru aceasta, îndepărtează o parte a aripilor păsărilor ca acestea să nu mai poată să zboare. Această intervenție este foarte brutală și va fi interzisă în 2018. Noi ne opunem acestor hoți de lebede de ani de zile și i-am solicitat în nenumărate rânduri secretarei de stat responsabile, Dijksma, să retragă această excepție. Când acum două săptămâni programul de televiziune neerlandez EenVandaag a acordat atenție hoților de lebede, întreaga țară a putut să vadă cât de crude sunt aceste practici. Ca urmare a tulburării sociale ce s-a produs astfel, secretarul de stat a promis în sfârșit să retragă excepția. Sper să se țină de cuvânt!

Lupta pentru drepturile animalelor se derulează în continuare: recent, doi cimpanzei au fost desemnați drept persoane în New York, drept pentru care aceștia ar trebui să beneficieze de aceleași drepturi ca oamenii. Dacă aceasta va deveni o decizie definitivă cu tot ce înseamnă aceasta, rămâne de văzut în următoarea ședință din 27 mai. În orice caz, este un semn bun că un judecător se mulează la modul serios asupra acestei chestiuni.

A few weeks ago, I talked about the controversial migratory bird hunt in Malta. Each spring, and so again this spring, hunters in Malta get permission to shoot migratory birds flying from Africa to Europe. My colleague Anja Hazekamp, who represents our party in Europe, has asked to abandon the migratory bird hunt this spring, but to no avail. However, the hunters themselves have burned their fingers by shooting a kestrel from the air. The kestrel ended up dead on a school yard full of playing children and, as a consequence of this bloody incident, the migratory bird hunt in Malta had to stop with immediate effect! This spring, the hunters have nowhere else to go in the EU. As far as I’m concerned, it stays like that!

Although the trade in seal fur was already banned by the European Union in 2009, an illegal seal fur trade still exists within the EU. Every spring in Canada, among other countries, hundreds of thousands of seal pups of only two weeks old are still clubbed to death on the ice. I have asked our Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Minister Ploumen, whether she is willing to confront the Canadian government on behalf of the Netherlands about this gruesome seal hunt and, fortunately, she has promised to do this.

In our own country, swan drifters are unfortunately still active. Although it has been prohibited to catch and kill swans for meat and down production in the Netherlands since 2008, two swan herders are currently still active in the Netherlands. The swan drifters keep and sell swans as ornamental birds. For this purpose, they remove a part of their wings, as a result of which the swans can no longer fly. The procedure is very cruel and will be prohibited in 2018. We have been opposed to swan herding for years and we have asked the responsible State Secretary, Dijksma, many times to withdraw the exemption. Last week, when the Dutch TV programme EenVandaag devoted attention to swan herding, the whole country could see how horrific these practices are. Following the social commotion this created, the State Secretary finally promised to withdraw the exemption. I hope she will stick to her promise!

The struggle for animal rights is in full swing: recently, two chimpanzees in New York were recognised as persons by a judge, which would give them the same rights as people have. At the next hearing on 27 May, it will become clear whether this will be a definitive judgment with accompanying consequences. Anyhow, it’s a good sign a judge is seriously looking into this matter.
