Les vacances d’été se terminent seulement la semaine prochaine, mais cet été a été tellement mouvementé que je vous en mets déjà au courant dans ce Worldlog.

Parmi d’autres choses, nous en avons pris soin que la Deuxième Chambre s’est réunie dès la semaine dernière. La raison: le scandale des œufs contaminés qui a été révélé cet été. On a constaté que beaucoup d’œufs néerlandais contenaient des traces du poison fipronil et depuis lors, des millions d’œufs ont été retirés du marché et certainement un million et demi de poules ont été tuées inutilement. Le fipronil avait été illégalement répandu et utilisé pour nettoyer des étables de poules; Ainsi le poison s’est retrouvé dans les œufs. L’Autorité Néerlandaise sur la Sécurité des Aliments (NVWA), qui doit surveiller le bien-être des animaux et la sécurité alimentaire, a complètement échoué, en partie parce que l’année dernière la NVWA avait déjà reçu des signaux concernant l’utilisation du fipronil, mais elle n’avait pas pris de mesures. La surveillance défaillante est due aux partis politiques qui ont financièrement dépouillé la NVWA et qui ont confié le contrôle au secteur lui-même. Tout cela montre qu’il faut le plus vite possible arrêter d’accepter l’idée que l’élevage intensif peut se réguler soi-même.

Étable pour poules

Pour comble de malheur, il y a eu plusieurs incendies dans des étables aux Pays-Bas cet été. Avant les vacances, les partis D66, CDA, VVD, CU et SGP ont voté contre notre motion pour des règles de protection contre les incendies plus strictes. Depuis, des centaines de milliers d’animaux sont morts d’étouffement ou en brûlant. À la demande du Parti pour les Animaux, un certain nombre de mesures ont déjà été prises. Le «Plan d’action contre les incendies dans les étables 2012-2016» oblige les agriculteurs à diviser l’étable en compartiments et à travailler avec des matériaux ignifuges dans de nouveaux bâtiments ou lors de rénovations. Il doit y avoir en outre des points d’eau. Mais cela ne suffit pas. Ces règles doivent également s’appliquer aux étables existantes. En plus, une obligation est requise pour une alerte d’incendie, un système automatique d’extinction d’incendie et une échappée pour les animaux afin qu’ils puissent sortir en cas de feu. À suivre!

Cet été, une délégation du Parti pour les Animaux a voyagé pendant toute une semaine en train à travers le Maroc, à la recherche de coopérations possibles avec des organisations marocaines qui défendent les animaux, la nature et l’environnement. Ils sont revenus avec une conclusion bien agréable: Au Maroc, il existe de nombreuses possibilités en matière de durabilité et de bien-être des animaux. Seulement, elles doivent encore être saisies. Malheureusement, nous avons aussi connu beaucoup de terreur cet été. Dans la ville américaine de Charlottesville, il y a eu une manifestation violente de l’extrême droite. Des actes terroristes ont également été commis en Irak, en Espagne et en Finlande. Combattre la violence et l’intolérance envers tous les habitants de notre planète est une tâche pour chacun d’entre nous. Une des personnes qui avait très bien compris cela, était Dick Gregory, un comédien et militant qui est malheureusement mort la semaine dernière. Gregory a rejoint Martin Luther King Jr. dans les années soixante dans la lutte pour les droits civils et il s’est engagé pendant de nombreuses années pour les droits des animaux. Selon ses propres mots: «Because I am a civil rights activist, I am an animal rights activist». Il utilisait l’humour pour dénoncer des abus. Quel exemple pour nous tous!

Heureusement que l’été a également apporté de belles choses. Par exemple, notre parti a participé pour la troisième fois à la Canal Parade à Amsterdam. Par le biais des slogans «Fierté quant à la diversité» et «Fierté quant à la (votre) nature», le Parti pour les Animaux a exprimé le message suivant: «Soyez fier de notre (bio)diversité ét de votre diversité. Soyez fier de notre nature ét de qui vous êtes de nature». Pendant la Canal Parade, on appelle d’une manière positive à une plus grande acceptation et égalité pour les groupes LBGT partout dans le monde. Fière de nos membres qui y ont participé! Finalement, les femmes néerlandaises sont devenues Championnes d’Europe de football. Un véritable moment historique pour l’émancipation du football féminin!

Summer recess will end next week but this summer was so turbulent that I already want to tell you something about it now in this Worldlog.

We, amongst others, made it happen that the Lower House came back from recess last week. The reason: the poison egg scandal that came out this summer. Many Dutch eggs appeared to be infected with the poison Fipronil and since then many eggs were withdrawn from the market and at least one and a half million chickens were killed unnecessarily. Fipronil was illegally distributed and used to clean chicken sheds; that is how the eggs were infected with the poison. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA)), which monitors animal welfare and food safety, completely failed, partly because it knew about the use of Fipronil last year already and never took action. The fact that they failed to monitor successfully is to blame on the political parties that have slashed the NVWA and left the supervision to the sector itself. This all shows that we should stop thinking that the factory farming industry can regulate itself.

To make matters even worse, there were several shed fires in the Netherlands. Before summer recess started, the political parties D66, VVD, CU and SGP voted against our motion for stricter fire regulations. Since then, hundreds of thousands of animals died because they suffocated or were burnt. On the insistence of the Party for the Animals some measures have already been taken. The ‘Action Plan Shed Fires 2012-2016’ obliges farmers to divide sheds into compartments when they build new ones or renovate them and to use fire safe materials. There must also be a water supply for fire-fighting. But that is not enough. These regulations should also apply for existing sheds. In addition, there should be an obligation to have a fire alarm, a sprinkler or water fog system, and an open air run so that the animals can go outside in case of a fire. To be continued!

A delegation of the Party for the Animals travelled for a week through Morocco this summer, looking for possible cooperation with Moroccan organisations that stand up for animals, nature and the environment. They returned with a good conclusion: there are many opportunities in the field of sustainability and animal welfare. They just have to be seized. Read here more about the trip.

Unfortunately, we have seen much terror this summer. There was a violent right-wing demonstration in the US city of Charlottesville. Terrorist acts were also committed in Iraq, Spain and Finland. The battle against violence and intolerance against all inhabitants on our planet is a task for all of us. One of the persons who understood that well was Dick Gregory, comedian and activist, who unfortunately passed away last week. Gregory joined Martin Luther King Jr. in the 60s in the fight for civil rights and fought for animas rights for years too. In his own words: “Because I am a civil rights activist, I am an animal rights activist.” He used humour to expose abuse. He was a great example for all!

Luckily, the summer also brought us nice things. For example, our party participated in the Canal Parade in Amsterdam. With the slogans ‘Pride in diversity’ and ‘Pride in (your) nature’ the Party for the Animals lived its message: ‘Be proud of our (bio)diversity and of your diversity; be proud of our nature and of who you naturally are’. During the Canal Parade, more acceptance and equality of LHBT+ groups, wherever in the world, was called for in a positive way. Proud of our members who joined the parade! See here the aftermovie.

Last of all, the Dutch women became European Champions in football. A true milestone for the emancipation of women’s football.
