El receso del verano oficialmente no terminará hasta la próxima semana. Sin embargo, este verano ha sido tan turbulento que ya les quiero poner al tanto de todo mediante este Worldlog.

Entre otros logramos que la semana pasada la Segunda Cámara regresara del receso. La razón: el escándalo de los huevos envenenados que surgió este verano. Resultó que muchos de los huevos en venta en Holanda contenían el veneno fipronil. Por lo tanto se retiraron millones de huevos de las tiendas y mataron innecesariamente a por lo menos un millón y medio de pollos. El fipronil se aplicó ilícitamente para la limpieza de los aviarios; así es como el veneno entró a los huevos. La Autoridad Holandesa de Alimentos y Medicamentos (NVWA), que está encargada de asegurar el bienestar de los animales y la seguridad de los alimentos, falló por completo; más aún si consideramos que la NVWA ya había recibido varios denuncios sobre el uso de fipronil, y que no tomó ninguna acción. Esta supervisión fracasada se debe a los partidos políticos que han recordado el presupuesto de la organización y han encargado al sector mismo para llevar a cabo el control. Esto nuevamente muestra que es necesario terminar con la idea de que las ganaderías intensivas pudieran regularse solos.

Y si eso no fuera suficiente, también hubo viarios incendios en establos en Holanda. Antes del receso, los partidos D66, CDA, VVD, CU y SGP votaron en contra de nuestra moción para mayores requisitos de seguridad contra incendios. Desde entonces han muerto cientos de miles de animales a causa de asfixia o incineración. Por petición del PplA ya se han tomado algunas medidas. El ‘Plan de acción para la prevención de incendios de establos 2012-2016’ obliga a los agricultores a dividir los establos en compartimientos y usar materiales de prevención de incendios en caso de nuevas construcciones. Asimismo, cada establo debe contar con un pozo con agua para combatir incendios. Sin embargo, no es suficiente. Estos requisitos también deberían aplicarse para los establos existentes. Además, es necesario incluir la obligación de una alarma de incendios y un sistema de extinción de incendios, así como una salida accesible para que los animales puedan salir en todo momento en caso de incendio. ¡Continua!

Un representante del Partido por los Animales viajó este verano durante una semana por tren a través de Marruecas en búsqueda de una posible colaboración con organizaciones que se dedican a la protección de los animales, la naturaleza y el medio ambiente en general. Llegó a una conclusión positiva: en Marruecos se encuentran muchas oportunidades en cuanto a la sostenibilidad y el bienestar de los animales. Solamente se requiere que alguien las acoja. Desafortunadamente también hemos visto muchas atentados terroristas este verano. En la cuidad norteamericana de Charlottesville se estalló un conflicto violento iniciado por parte del extremo derecho. También en Irak, España y Finlandia se cometieron actos terroristas. Combatir la violencia y la intolerancia en contra de los habitantes de este mundo es una tarea de que nos corresponde a todos. Alguien que lo entendió muy bien era Dick Gregory, el cómico y activista que desafortunadamente falleció la semana pasada. Gregory se unió al movimiento de Martin Luther King Jr. en los años sesenta para luchar por los derechos civiles y se dedicó durante años a defender los derechos de los animales. En sus propias palabras: “Como soy activista de derechos civiles, naturalmente me convierto en activista para los derechos de los animales.” Usó su humor para exponer las controversias. ¡Qué persona tan ejemplar para todos nosotros!

Afortunadamente, el verano también nos trajo cosas bonitas. Nuestro partido participó por tercera vez en el Desfile por los Canales en Ámsterdam. Con los eslóganes ‘Orgullo por la diversidad’ y ‘Orgullo por (tú) naturaleza’, el Partido por los Animales transmitió el mensaje: ‘Que sean orgullosos de nuestra (bio)diversidad; que sean orgullos de nuestra naturaleza y de tú naturaleza. Durante el Desfile por los Canales se convocó de manera positiva la aceptación e igualdad de la comunidad LGBTIQ, en todo el mundo. ¡Estamos orgullosos de todos nuestros miembros que participaron! Finalmente, la selección femenil holandesa de futbol ganó la Eurocopa. ¡Un hito para la emancipación del futbol femenil!

Summer recess will end next week but this summer was so turbulent that I already want to tell you something about it now in this Worldlog.

We, amongst others, made it happen that the Lower House came back from recess last week. The reason: the poison egg scandal that came out this summer. Many Dutch eggs appeared to be infected with the poison Fipronil and since then many eggs were withdrawn from the market and at least one and a half million chickens were killed unnecessarily. Fipronil was illegally distributed and used to clean chicken sheds; that is how the eggs were infected with the poison. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA)), which monitors animal welfare and food safety, completely failed, partly because it knew about the use of Fipronil last year already and never took action. The fact that they failed to monitor successfully is to blame on the political parties that have slashed the NVWA and left the supervision to the sector itself. This all shows that we should stop thinking that the factory farming industry can regulate itself.

To make matters even worse, there were several shed fires in the Netherlands. Before summer recess started, the political parties D66, VVD, CU and SGP voted against our motion for stricter fire regulations. Since then, hundreds of thousands of animals died because they suffocated or were burnt. On the insistence of the Party for the Animals some measures have already been taken. The ‘Action Plan Shed Fires 2012-2016’ obliges farmers to divide sheds into compartments when they build new ones or renovate them and to use fire safe materials. There must also be a water supply for fire-fighting. But that is not enough. These regulations should also apply for existing sheds. In addition, there should be an obligation to have a fire alarm, a sprinkler or water fog system, and an open air run so that the animals can go outside in case of a fire. To be continued!

A delegation of the Party for the Animals travelled for a week through Morocco this summer, looking for possible cooperation with Moroccan organisations that stand up for animals, nature and the environment. They returned with a good conclusion: there are many opportunities in the field of sustainability and animal welfare. They just have to be seized. Read here more about the trip.

Unfortunately, we have seen much terror this summer. There was a violent right-wing demonstration in the US city of Charlottesville. Terrorist acts were also committed in Iraq, Spain and Finland. The battle against violence and intolerance against all inhabitants on our planet is a task for all of us. One of the persons who understood that well was Dick Gregory, comedian and activist, who unfortunately passed away last week. Gregory joined Martin Luther King Jr. in the 60s in the fight for civil rights and fought for animas rights for years too. In his own words: “Because I am a civil rights activist, I am an animal rights activist.” He used humour to expose abuse. He was a great example for all!

Luckily, the summer also brought us nice things. For example, our party participated in the Canal Parade in Amsterdam. With the slogans ‘Pride in diversity’ and ‘Pride in (your) nature’ the Party for the Animals lived its message: ‘Be proud of our (bio)diversity and of your diversity; be proud of our nature and of who you naturally are’. During the Canal Parade, more acceptance and equality of LHBT+ groups, wherever in the world, was called for in a positive way. Proud of our members who joined the parade! See here the aftermovie.

Last of all, the Dutch women became European Champions in football. A true milestone for the emancipation of women’s football.
