Worldlog Semaine 14 – 2008

Karen Soeters, directrice de notre département scientifique, est rentrée des Genesis awards de Beverly Hills avec de très belles paroles que de nombreuses stars amies des animaux ont exprimées pour notre film Meat the Truth. Nous retiendrons Andrea Bowen, Ben Stein, Bill Maher, Kate Flannery, Hayden Panettiere, Kisten Vangsness, mais il y en a aussi beaucoup d’autres. Nous allons sous peu également interviewer Pamela Anderson.

Les enregistrements auxquels des enfants anglophones ont bien voulu participer pour la pièce de théâtre ont été finalisés le week-end dernier. Durant les prochaines semaines, nous procéderons a des enregistrements auxquels participeront un agriculteur bio de Wales, en Grande-Bretagne, et le Docteur David Davies, qui sait tout sur le phénomène de diminution des gaz à effet de serre chez les vaches par le biais d’une alimentation naturelle. Je suis tombée sur une vidéo assez sympa sur le site YouTube qui met en évidence le rapport entre la consommation de viande et les gaz à effet de serre.

En plus du film, nous avons consacré beaucoup d’énergie la semaine dernière aux suites engendrées par le scandale des abattoirs et du transport de bétail, que nous avons abordé aux Pays-Bas. Un informateur qui désirait s’entretenir exclusivement avec un ministre, par peur de représailles, a pu entre-temps dicuter longuement avec la ministre Gerda Verburg, grâce au Parti pour les Animaux qui est intervenu pour organiser la rencontre. Je trouve remarquable que la ministre ait bien voulu recevoir l’informateur dans un délai aussi bref, et j’attend une action de sa part qui impliquerait le Parlement!

Du reste, notre semaine parlementaire fut placée sous le signe du débat à propos du film anti-islam Fitna, réalisé par le député néerlandais Geert Wilders. J’ai pris part au débat en plaidant pour une séparation plus nette entre l’église et l’Etat. L’Etat ne devrait pas se mêler des orientations religieuses des habitants de notre pays, et la religion, à son tour, ne devrait pas intervenir dans les questions d’Etat.

Par ailleurs, nous avons posé des questions au gouvernement néerlandais concernant la chasse aux phoques au Canada, ouverte depuis la semaine dernière, et nous avons, au travers de motions, voulu attirer l’attention sur le manque de transparence des contrôles dans le secteur de la viande aux Pays-Bas qui, curieusement, est aux mains de représentants de ce même secteur de la viande!

Bonne nouvelle d’Angleterre: Dans leur chateau du 14ème siècle, le Duc et la Duchesse d’Hamilton mènent une action contre la chaîne de magasins Selfridges pour cause de vente de foie gras. Le duc et la duchesse sont d’ailleurs tous deux végétariens. Que des aristocrates entrent en action pour le bien-être des animaux, c’est plutôt formidable!

Au sénat le Parti pour les Animaux a fait la démonstration de l’importance que peut avoir l’influence d’un parti encore petit tel que le notre. Une proposition de loi du gouvernement néerlandais visant à autoriser, durant une période d’essai, les paris en ligne a fait naufrage en étant rejetée par 37 voix contre 35. C’est notre voix qui s’est révélée décisive!

En écho aux Worldlogs, et chaque jour davantage, des demandes d’interview nous parviennent de l’étranger. Ca nous fait très plaisir de constater que les messages se répandent par l’intermédiaire de ce nouveau canal. Karen Soeters, Director of our Scientific Bureau, has returned from the Genesis Awards in Beverly Hills with great quotes from lots of animal-friendly celebrities for our film Meat the Truth, such as Andrea Bowen, Ben Stein, Bill Maher, Kate Flannery, Hayden Panettiere, Kisten Vangsness and many more. We will soon be recording an interview with Pamela Anderson.

Last week we completed filming the interviews with the English-speaking children and the theatre performance. In the next few weeks we will be filming interviews with a biological farmer in Wales, Great Britain and with Dr David Davies who is an expert on reducing green-house gases produced by cows by giving them natural feed. By the way, I found a nice little film on YouTube on the link between meat consumption and green-house gases.

In addition to the film, the past week has kept us busy with the follow-up to the slaughterhouse and cattle transport scandal that we brought to the Dutch public’s attention. A whistleblower, who insisted on speaking only with the minister as he feared for his safety, has since met with and had a long discussion with Minister Verburg. The Party for the Animals arranged the meeting. I find it extremely commendable that the minister took the time to receive the whistleblower at such short notice and I look forward to seeing how she pursues the matter in parliament!

Otherwise, our parliamentary work was dominated this week by the debate on the anti-Muslim film Fitna by the Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders. In my contribution to the debate, I argued for a clearer separation of church and state. The state should not concern itself with the religious views of citizens and religion should not concern itself with the affairs of state.

We have put questions to the Dutch government on the Canadian seal hunt that began last week and passed motions to demand attention for the obscure supervision of the Dutch meat sector that oddly enough is in the hands of …. the same people who represent that very same meat sector!

Good news from Great Britain: the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton are campaigning from their 14th-century castle against the sale of foie gras at the Selfridges store chain. The Duke and Duchess of Hamilton are both vegetarians. Great news, aristocrats campaigning for the welfare of animals!

Last week the Party for the Animals demonstrated in the senate how big the influence of a small party like ours can be. A bill from the Dutch cabinet to allow Internet gambling on a trial basis was torpedoed with 37 against 35 votes. Our vote in the senate was the ‘balancing vote!’
