Worldlog Semana 14 – 2008

Karen Soeters, directora de nuestra oficina científica, ha regresado de la entrega de premios Genesis en Beverly Hills varias celebridades benefactoras de animales reaccionaron favorablemente a nuestra película Encuentro con la Verdad. Como Andrea Bowen, Ben Stein, Bill Maher, Kate Flannery, Hayden Panettiere, Kirsten Vangsness, y muchos otros. Dentro de poco filmaremos también una entrevista con Pamela Anderson.

El fin de semana pasado hemos terminado las filmaciones con los niños de habla inglesa y para el registro de teatro. La semana próxima filmaremos con un campesino biológico en Wales (Gran Bretaña) y con el Dr. David Davies, quien sabe todo sobre la disminución de gases de invernadero en las vacas, proporcionándoles alimento natural. Yo encontré una peliculita muy simpática en YouTube, acerca la relación existente entre el consumo de carne y gases de invernadero.

Además de la película, la semana pasada hemos estado ocupados con las consecuencias del escándalo de mataderos y transporte de ganado en Holanda. Un vocero, que por temor a su seguridad, había pedido hablar solo con el Ministro, ya ha conversado largamente con el Ministro Verburg, después que el Partido para los Animales había intermediado para esta conversación. Encuentro muy elogiante que el Ministro, en tan corto plazo, se haya tomado el tiempo para recibir al vocero y ¡espera reacciones posteriores del Parlamento!

Además, en nuestro trabajo parlamentario de esta semana se destacó especialmente la película anti-islámica Fitna, del parlamentario holandés Geert Wilders. Durante mi participación en el debate he pleiteado por una separación mas clara entre Iglesia y Estado. El Estado no debería inmiscuirse en los puntos de vista religiosos, ni la Religión en los asuntos del Estado.

También hemos interrogado al Gobierno respecto a la cacería de perros marinos que comenzó la semana pasada y, por intermedio de mociones, hemos llamado la atención por la falta de transparencia en la vigilancia en el sector de las carnes, el cual, por raro que parezca, está en manos …¡del mismo sector!

Linda noticia de Inglaterra: el Duque y la Duquesa de Hamilton, desde su castillo del siglo IV, demuestran contra la cadena de tiendas Selfridges, con motivo de la venta de pate foie. Por lo demás, tanto el Duque como la Duquesa son vegetarianos. Estupendas noticias, ¡aristócratas en acción por el bienestar de los animales!

El Partido para los Animales ha mostrado la semana pasada cuán importante puede ser la influencia de un pequeño Partido Político como el nuestro. El Gabinete holandés propuso una ley para comprobar si resultan adecuadas las apuestas via Internet, fracasó con 37 votos contra 35. Nuestra voz en el Senado representó ‘el voto de equilibrio’.

Con motivo de los Worldlogs , nos llegan del extrangero cada vez más peticiones para entrevistas. Muy lindo de notar que el mensaje se propague tan rápido via este nuevo medio. Karen Soeters, Director of our Scientific Bureau, has returned from the Genesis Awards in Beverly Hills with great quotes from lots of animal-friendly celebrities for our film Meat the Truth, such as Andrea Bowen, Ben Stein, Bill Maher, Kate Flannery, Hayden Panettiere, Kisten Vangsness and many more. We will soon be recording an interview with Pamela Anderson.

Last week we completed filming the interviews with the English-speaking children and the theatre performance. In the next few weeks we will be filming interviews with a biological farmer in Wales, Great Britain and with Dr David Davies who is an expert on reducing green-house gases produced by cows by giving them natural feed. By the way, I found a nice little film on YouTube on the link between meat consumption and green-house gases.

In addition to the film, the past week has kept us busy with the follow-up to the slaughterhouse and cattle transport scandal that we brought to the Dutch public’s attention. A whistleblower, who insisted on speaking only with the minister as he feared for his safety, has since met with and had a long discussion with Minister Verburg. The Party for the Animals arranged the meeting. I find it extremely commendable that the minister took the time to receive the whistleblower at such short notice and I look forward to seeing how she pursues the matter in parliament!

Otherwise, our parliamentary work was dominated this week by the debate on the anti-Muslim film Fitna by the Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders. In my contribution to the debate, I argued for a clearer separation of church and state. The state should not concern itself with the religious views of citizens and religion should not concern itself with the affairs of state.

We have put questions to the Dutch government on the Canadian seal hunt that began last week and passed motions to demand attention for the obscure supervision of the Dutch meat sector that oddly enough is in the hands of …. the same people who represent that very same meat sector!

Good news from Great Britain: the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton are campaigning from their 14th-century castle against the sale of foie gras at the Selfridges store chain. The Duke and Duchess of Hamilton are both vegetarians. Great news, aristocrats campaigning for the welfare of animals!

Last week the Party for the Animals demonstrated in the senate how big the influence of a small party like ours can be. A bill from the Dutch cabinet to allow Internet gambling on a trial basis was torpedoed with 37 against 35 votes. Our vote in the senate was the ‘balancing vote!’
