Vacanța de vară se încheie săptămâna viitoare, însă această vară a fost atât de agitată încât trebuie deja să vă țin la curent în această ediție a Worldlog-ului.

Printre altele, am avut grijă ca săptămâna trecută, Camera Deputaților să se întoarcă din vacanță. Motivul: scandalul cu ouăle otrăvite care a ieșit la lumină vara aceasta. Multe ouă din Țările de Jos par să conțină urme de o otravă numită fipronil și de atunci, milioane de ouă au fost retrase din comerț și mai bine de un milion și jumătate de găini au fost ucise fără să fie nevoie. Fipronil este distribuit în mod ilegal și folosit pentru curățarea șoproanelor de găini; astfel otrava a ajuns în ouă. Autoritatea Neerlandeză pentru Siguranța Alimentară (NVWA), cea care trebuie să supravegheze bunăstarea animalelor și siguranța alimentelor, a eșuat catastrofic, în parte din cauza faptului că anul trecut, NVWA primise deja informații cu privire la utilizarea fipronilului, însă nu a luat nicio măsură. Lipsa de supraveghere poate fi atribuită partidelor politice care au diminuat puterea NVWA și au preluat singure responsabilitatea controalelor în acest sector. Toate acestea demonstrează că trebuie să se renunțe cât mai curând posibil la ideea potrivit căreia sectorul agricol intensiv se poate auto-reglementa.

Pe deasupra, vara aceasta în Țările de Jos au avut loc și o mulțime de incendii în grajduri. Înaintea vacanței, partidele D66, CDA, VVD, CU și SGP au votat împotriva moțiunii noastre pentru înăsprirea reglementărilor privind securitatea la incendii. De atunci au murit sute de mii de animale din pricina sufocării sau incendiilor. La insistențele PvdD au fost luate deja câteva măsuri. „Planul de Acțiune pentru Incendiile din Grajduri 2012-2016” îi obligă pe agricultori ca la construcția sau renovarea grajdurilor, acestea să fie împărțite pe compartimente iar activitatea să se desfășoare cu materiale rezistente la incendii. De asemenea trebuie să existe apă pentru stingerea incendiilor. Însă aceasta nu este suficient. Aceste reguli trebuie să se aplice și grajdurilor deja existente. În plus, ar trebui introdusă obligația deținerii unei alarme de incendiu, unei instalații de stropit sau cu ceață de apă și a unui traseu liber pentru animale, astfel încât acestea să poată ieși afară în caz de incendiu. O delegație din partea Partidului pentru Animale a călătorit vara aceasta cu trenul prin Maroc timp de o săptămână, în căutarea unei posibile colaborări cu organizațiile marocane ce luptă pentru drepturile animalelor, pentru natură și pentru mediul înconjurător. S-au întors cu o concluzie bună: în Maroc există multe șanse de reușită în domeniul durabilității și bunăstării animalelor. Aceste oportunități trebuie doar fructificate. Din păcate, vara aceasta am văzut și multă teroare. În statul american Charlottesville a avut loc o demonstrație violentă a politicii de extremă dreapta. Și în Irak, Spania și Finlanda au avut loc acte teroriste. Combaterea violenței și a intoleranței față de toți locuitorii planetei noastre este ceva ce toți trebuie să facem. O persoană care a înțeles deja foarte bine acest lucru este Dick Gregory, actor de comedie și activist care din păcate s-a stins săptămâna trecută. Gregory s-a alăturat lui Martin Luther King Jr. în anii șaizeci în lupta pentru drepturile civile și a activat ani de zile pentru drepturile animalelor. În propriile sale cuvinte: „Pentru că sunt un activist pentru drepturile civile, sunt un activist pentru drepturile animalelor.” Acesta a socs în evidență abuzuri cu ajutorul umorului. Ce mai exemplu pentru noi toți!

Din fericire, această vară ne-a adus și vești bune. Partidul nostru a participat pentru a treia oară la Parada pe Canal din Amsterdam. Cu sloganurile „Pride in diversity” (Mândru de diversitate) și „Pride in (your) nature” (Mândru de natura ta), Partidul pentru Animale a comunicat următorul mesaj: „Fii mândru de (bio)diversitatea noastră și de diversitatea ta; fii mândru de natura noastră și de cine ești tu de la natură”. În timpul paradei s-a cerut într-o manieră pozitivă mai multă acceptare și egalitate pentru grupurile LHBTI+ de pretutindeni. Suntem mândri de membrii noștri care au participat! Nu în ultimul rând, echipa națională de fotbal feminin a Țărilor de Jos a câștigat Campionatul European. Un eveniment cu adevărat important pentru a marca emanciparea fotbalului feminin!

Summer recess will end next week but this summer was so turbulent that I already want to tell you something about it now in this Worldlog.

We, amongst others, made it happen that the Lower House came back from recess last week. The reason: the poison egg scandal that came out this summer. Many Dutch eggs appeared to be infected with the poison Fipronil and since then many eggs were withdrawn from the market and at least one and a half million chickens were killed unnecessarily. Fipronil was illegally distributed and used to clean chicken sheds; that is how the eggs were infected with the poison. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA)), which monitors animal welfare and food safety, completely failed, partly because it knew about the use of Fipronil last year already and never took action. The fact that they failed to monitor successfully is to blame on the political parties that have slashed the NVWA and left the supervision to the sector itself. This all shows that we should stop thinking that the factory farming industry can regulate itself.

To make matters even worse, there were several shed fires in the Netherlands. Before summer recess started, the political parties D66, VVD, CU and SGP voted against our motion for stricter fire regulations. Since then, hundreds of thousands of animals died because they suffocated or were burnt. On the insistence of the Party for the Animals some measures have already been taken. The ‘Action Plan Shed Fires 2012-2016’ obliges farmers to divide sheds into compartments when they build new ones or renovate them and to use fire safe materials. There must also be a water supply for fire-fighting. But that is not enough. These regulations should also apply for existing sheds. In addition, there should be an obligation to have a fire alarm, a sprinkler or water fog system, and an open air run so that the animals can go outside in case of a fire. To be continued!

A delegation of the Party for the Animals travelled for a week through Morocco this summer, looking for possible cooperation with Moroccan organisations that stand up for animals, nature and the environment. They returned with a good conclusion: there are many opportunities in the field of sustainability and animal welfare. They just have to be seized. Read here more about the trip.

Unfortunately, we have seen much terror this summer. There was a violent right-wing demonstration in the US city of Charlottesville. Terrorist acts were also committed in Iraq, Spain and Finland. The battle against violence and intolerance against all inhabitants on our planet is a task for all of us. One of the persons who understood that well was Dick Gregory, comedian and activist, who unfortunately passed away last week. Gregory joined Martin Luther King Jr. in the 60s in the fight for civil rights and fought for animas rights for years too. In his own words: “Because I am a civil rights activist, I am an animal rights activist.” He used humour to expose abuse. He was a great example for all!

Luckily, the summer also brought us nice things. For example, our party participated in the Canal Parade in Amsterdam. With the slogans ‘Pride in diversity’ and ‘Pride in (your) nature’ the Party for the Animals lived its message: ‘Be proud of our (bio)diversity and of your diversity; be proud of our nature and of who you naturally are’. During the Canal Parade, more acceptance and equality of LHBT+ groups, wherever in the world, was called for in a positive way. Proud of our members who joined the parade! See here the aftermovie.

Last of all, the Dutch women became European Champions in football. A true milestone for the emancipation of women’s football.
